Holiday bookings up 50pc
The number of people planning to book a holiday is up 50 per cent compared with last year as families try to escape the bad weather, research suggests.
More than 13 million plan to make a booking before the end of February, and are willing to spend almost £830.
Half of them intend on traveling to Europe and 6 per cent will go to America, while 29 per cent plan on staying in Britain, according to the survey by Sainsbury’s Travel Insurance.

While the typical amount being spend on a holiday is down 1 per cent on last year and down 6 per cent on two years ago, the higher number of people intending to purchase a holiday means that the collective spend in this period is set to break £11 billion, up 49 per cent on last year.

Scott Gorman, Sainsbury’s Travel Insurance Manager, said: “A lot of people will be fed up with the winter snow and travel delays or cancellations they have had to endure in 2010, particularly over Christmas. This may lead to a significant increase in people intending to book a holiday to give them something to look forward to in the New Year.”

The research found that those living in London are the keenest to get away in the New Year, with 41 per cent planning to book a holiday. Residents of East Anglia and the South East are also keen, with 39 per cent looking to make a booking before the end of next month.
