The Hellenic Navy (HN) (Greek: Πολεμικό Ναυτικό, Polemikó Naftikó, abbreviated ΠΝ) is the naval force of Greece, part of the Greek Armed Forces. The modern Greek navy has its roots in the naval forces of various Aegean Islands, which fought in the Greek War of Independence. During the periods of monarchy (1833–1924 and 1936–1973) it was known as the Royal Navy (Βασιλικόν Ναυτικόν, Vasilikón Naftikón, abbreviated ΒΝ).The total displacement of all the navy's vessels is approximately 150,000 tons. The motto of the Hellenic Navy is "Μέγα το της Θαλάσσης Κράτος" from Thucydides' account of Pericles' oration on the eve of the Peloponnesian War. This has been roughly translated as "Great is the country that controls the sea". The Hellenic Navy's emblem consists of an anchor in front of a crossed Christian cross and trident, with the cross symbolizing Greek Orthodoxy, and the trident symbolizing Poseidon, the god of the sea in Greek mythology. Pericles' words are written across the top of the emblem. "The navy, as it represents a necessary weapon for Greece, should only be created for war and aim to victory."...............The Hellenic Merchant Marine refers to the Merchant Marine of Greece, engaged in commerce and transportation of goods and services universally. It consists of the merchant vessels owned by Greek civilians, flying either the Greek flag or a flag of convenience. Greece is a maritime nation by tradition, as shipping is arguably the oldest form of occupation of the Greeks and a key element of Greek economic activity since the ancient times. Nowadays, Greece has the largest merchant fleet in the world, which is the second largest contributor to the national economy after tourism and forms the backbone of world shipping. The Greek fleet flies a variety of flags, however some Greek shipowners gradually return to Greece following the changes to the legislative framework governing their operations and the improvement of infrastructure.Blogger Tips and Tricks

Greece general strike: Clashes erupt

Athens protest rally and police cordon, 23 Feb 11
More than 30,000 protesters marched to the Greek parliament
Police have fired tear gas to disperse dozens of stone-throwing demonstrators in Athens as a 24-hour general strike grips Greece.
The violence erupted during a rally by more than 30,000 angry workers near the Greek parliament. They object to the government's far-reaching budget cuts.
The strike paralysed public transport. More than 100 flights were cancelled.
.
Many schools are closed and hospitals have reduced services. Small businesses have joined in, closing many shops.
It is Greece's first major labour protest this year, as the government sticks to austerity cuts demanded under the terms of the country's international bail-out.
.
The Socialist government of Prime Minister George Papandreou is cutting spending and raising taxes to reduce its debt mountain.
Last year Greece secured a 110bn-euro (£84bn) bail-out from the European Union and International Monetar

Christchurch earthquake: families despair as rescue turns to recovery

Hopes that rescuers would find more survivors in the Christchurch rubble have been dashed after police said they feared that up to 100 people had died in the collapsed Canterbury TV office block and that 22 had been crushed under the cathedral's fallen spire.

In a blow to families and friends who were holding vigil for their relatives trapped inside the Canterbury TV building in the city centre, police said that reports from early in the day that 15 people had survived and found an air pocket inside the rubble were false.
.
Police said the building was "100 per cent non-survivable" because of smoke and diverted rescuers from the smoldering wreckage of the building, which also housed an English language school. There was also "no sign of life" from beneath the rubble at the Cathedral, officers said.
.
As John Key, the prime minister, declared a state of emergency, the official death toll from the 6.3 earthquake remained at 75, with 300 people still unaccounted for.
.
Mr Key said it was "a time of great agony" for New Zealand.
Vicky Treadall, the British High Commissioner to New Zealand, denied reports that 10 Britons were among the dead, but acknowledged it was likely that Britons had been injured.

Libya's interior minister, who had been declared dead by the country's leader Moamer Gaddafi, confirmed Wednesday that he has joined the anti-government protesters, DPA reported.
.
Abdul Fattah Younis, in a telephone interview with broadcaster Al Arabiya, said that a supporter of Gaddafi had sought to have him shot dead. The gunman missed however and injured a relative of the minister.
.
Younis added that he was no longer a minister but a soldier in the service of the people.
In a televised address Tuesday, Gaddafi said protesters in the eastern city of Benghazi had killed the interior minister.
