The Hellenic Navy (HN) (Greek: Πολεμικό Ναυτικό, Polemikó Naftikó, abbreviated ΠΝ) is the naval force of Greece, part of the Greek Armed Forces. The modern Greek navy has its roots in the naval forces of various Aegean Islands, which fought in the Greek War of Independence. During the periods of monarchy (1833–1924 and 1936–1973) it was known as the Royal Navy (Βασιλικόν Ναυτικόν, Vasilikón Naftikón, abbreviated ΒΝ).The total displacement of all the navy's vessels is approximately 150,000 tons. The motto of the Hellenic Navy is "Μέγα το της Θαλάσσης Κράτος" from Thucydides' account of Pericles' oration on the eve of the Peloponnesian War. This has been roughly translated as "Great is the country that controls the sea". The Hellenic Navy's emblem consists of an anchor in front of a crossed Christian cross and trident, with the cross symbolizing Greek Orthodoxy, and the trident symbolizing Poseidon, the god of the sea in Greek mythology. Pericles' words are written across the top of the emblem. "The navy, as it represents a necessary weapon for Greece, should only be created for war and aim to victory."...............The Hellenic Merchant Marine refers to the Merchant Marine of Greece, engaged in commerce and transportation of goods and services universally. It consists of the merchant vessels owned by Greek civilians, flying either the Greek flag or a flag of convenience. Greece is a maritime nation by tradition, as shipping is arguably the oldest form of occupation of the Greeks and a key element of Greek economic activity since the ancient times. Nowadays, Greece has the largest merchant fleet in the world, which is the second largest contributor to the national economy after tourism and forms the backbone of world shipping. The Greek fleet flies a variety of flags, however some Greek shipowners gradually return to Greece following the changes to the legislative framework governing their operations and the improvement of infrastructure.Blogger Tips and Tricks

Iceland, images of the Northern Lights..[ 1031 ]

Volcanic ash cloud: stunning Northern Lights images captured over Iceland

A series of spectacular images of the Northern Lights have been captured over the ash plume from the Iceland Volcano.

The incredible images show in amazing detail the sky lit up in amazing green colour above the Eyjafjallajökull volcano.

In the images, captured by New York-based photographer Lucas Jackson, red lava can also be seen spewing from the top of the active volcano.

Mr Jackson had earlier captured an astonishing lightning display over the volcano, which he wrote about in detail in an online blog.

The images, from the Reuters news agency, came as Iceland said it would close two of its airports for the first time later on Friday just as the rest of Europe was starting to recover from a week of airline chaos caused by the volcanic ash cloud.

The Icelandic aviation authority has announced that the Keflavik International Airport and Reykjavík International Airport will be closed from this morning.

Airports within Iceland had previously been unscathed by the giant ash cloud thanks to strong northwest winds which blew ash from the volcano, in the south of Iceland, out to sea and over Europe.

The closures come as airports are finally reopening across Europe after world travel was crippled for almost a week.

At its peak, the crisis affected 1.2 million passengers a day and 29 per cent of all global aviation, according to the International Air Transport Association.

Stranded air passengers have been warned they could face a lengthy battle to reclaim the cost of hotels and meals despite budget airlines agreeing to reimburse them.

And It appears increasingly likely that the taxpayer will end up footing the bill for the £1.6 billion cost to the airline and tourist industries of the six-day shutdown.

Greece activates the Debt-rescue Mechanism.. [ 1030 ]

Greece 'to activate EU/IMF loans'

Greece is desperately trying to keep its financial flag flying

BBC , Friday, 23 April 2010 11:08 UK

Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou is expected to ask for activation of the EU/IMF debt rescue mechanism, it has been reported.

It follows negotiations with eurozone nations and International Monetary Fund over the details of an emergency rescue package.

It comes a day after data showed a worse-than-expected budget deficit of 13.6% of gross domestic product.

Credit rating agency Moody's also cut its rating on Greek debt on Thursday.

Mr Papandreou is visiting the Aegean island of Kastellorizo before travelling to Washington for a meeting with the IMF.

After news of his potential announcement the euro climbed back from a one year low against the dollar, to $1.333.

Spending cutbacks

The loans package has been put together to help pull the eurozone member out of its debt crisis.

Greece is swamped by 300bn euros of debt and needs to borrow about 54bn euros this year alone.

In the middle of April finance ministers of the 16 eurozone nations agreed to provide up to 30bn euros (£26bn) in emergency loans for debt-hit Greece should it ask for them.

At the time they offered a three-year financing programme at interest rates of about 5%, based on IMF formulas.

Meanwhile, spending cutbacks being introduced by Athens to restore its finances are being resisted.

On Thursday, tens of thousands of Greek civil servants staged a strike to protest against the austerity programme.

Protesters have been demonstrating in Athens, not far from where officials from the IMF and European Central Bank are meeting to determine the fine details of a financial rescue package for Greece.

UK General Elections, second TV debate.. [ 1029 [

Debate: PM and Cameron target Clegg

Gordon Brown and David Cameron took the gloves off in the second TV debate of the General Election campaign in a bid to block the Nick Clegg bandwagon.

But instant polls of viewers of the 90-minute Sky News debate suggested they had not done enough to derail the Lib Dem leader's drive for Downing Street which gathered pace after a clear victory in last week's debate.

Both the Labour and Tory leaders took a more combative approach to the debate in Bristol, after being criticised last week for giving Mr Clegg an easy ride.

Rather than repeating "I agree with Nick" in a bid to win the Lib Dem leader over to their side, at one point Mr Cameron even said "I agree with Gordon" over nuclear weapons.

But after his victory in last week's debate gave his party a boost of up to 12 points in the polls and turned the election into a genuine three-horse race, it was Mr Clegg who came under most pressure over his policies on Europe, Trident and immigration.

As the Lib Dem leader repeated last week's attack on MPs from "the old parties" who "flipped" their second homes to maximise their income from expenses, Mr Cameron stepped in to warn him not to place himself "on a pedestal".

Both Mr Brown and Mr Cameron accused the Lib Dems of planning an "amnesty" for illegal immigrants, while Mr Clegg said that the other parties were "in denial" over the impossibility of deporting hundreds of thousands of migrants who have settled in the UK for a decade or more.

And Mr Clegg came under attack for his proposal to include Britain's Trident nuclear deterrent in the strategic defence review which all three parties have promised to hold after the election.

The Lib Dem leader cited a group of retired generals who have warned that going ahead with replacing Trident could take money away from troops on the frontline, and said that US President Barack Obama had identified the threats of the future as terrorism and failed states, against which nuclear arms could not be used.

But Mr Brown told him: "I have to deal with these issues every day and I say to you, Nick, get real."

Washington (CNN) April 22, 2010 7:40 p.m. EDT-- Federal authorities are flying 11 suspected pirates from East Africa to Norfolk, Virginia, to be prosecuted for alleged attacks on U.S. Navy ships near Somalia, according to multiple federal law enforcement sources familiar with the operation.

The accused pirates have been indicted on a series of charges that remain under court seal until the suspects appear before a federal magistrate in Norfolk early Friday, the officials said.

The suspects are expected to arrive in Norfolk late Thursday night and will remain in the custody of federal agents until they are taken into court, the officials said.

"The U.S. Marshals Service will be taking custody of the defendants following their initial appearance in U.S. District Court in Norfolk, and they will be housed locally through the court proceedings," the Marshals Service said in a written statement.

The service refused any other comment on the operation to bring the pirates to U.S. soil.

The FBI and Justice Department had no comment.

The cases will be prosecuted in Norfolk, which is in the Eastern District of Virginia. Officials from Alexandria, Virginia, where the district court is based, were already in Norfolk standing by for the pirates' arrival, officials said.

Federal officials are tentatively planning to hold a news conference Friday in Norfolk following the initial court appearances.

One official, who asked not to be identified because the cases are not yet public, said five of the accused pirates were captured after the USS Nicholas was attacked by a pirate ship on March 31. Six others were captured in a separate incident on April 10 after a pirate ship fired on the USS Ashland, the official said.

The United States, the European Union and others have beefed up their security presence in waters near Somalia after a rash of attacks by pirates in the past two years.

Environmental impact after rig sinks

(CNN) -- A 1-by-5-mile sheen of crude oil mix has spread across the Gulf of Mexico's surface around the area where an oil rig exploded and sank, a Coast Guard lieutenant said Thursday.

"This is a rainbow sheen with a dark center," Coast Guard Rear Adm. Mary Landry told reporters Thursday afternoon.

Officials do not know whether oil or fuel are leaking form the sunken Deepwater Horizon rig and the well below, but BP Vice President David Rainey said "it certainly has the potential to be a major spill." BP PLC operates the license on which the rig was drilling.

A remotely-operated vehicle is surveying the area and cleanup efforts are already under way, Landry said. The sheen "probably is residual from the fire and the activity that was going on on this rig before it sank below the surface," she said.

Meanwhile, the Coast Guard continued to search for 11 people missing after an explosion late Tuesday set the rig ablaze forcing workers to be evacuated from the vessel. Officials are still unsure what caused the blast.

"We do continue with search and rescue," Landry said. "As time passes, however, the probability of success in locating the 11 missing persons decreases."

Adrian Rose, a vice president for rig owner Transocean Ltd, told reporters that the missing workers may not have been able to get off the rig.

"Based upon our reports from crew workers we met as they came in last night, they believe that they [the missing workers] may have been on board the rig and not able to evacuate. We have not confirmed that yet," he said.

The company is still investigating the incident, but Rose said conversations with evacuated workers when they arrived onshore revealed "really quite heroic stories of how people looked after each other."

The mobile rig was about 52 miles southeast of Venice, Louisiana, when the explosion occurred Tuesday night. There were no indications it was a terrorist incident, the Coast Guard said.

Officials said 126 people were on board at the time of the explosion. Of the 115 accounted-for workers, 17 injured were evacuated by helicopter from the rig. Another 94 people were taken to shore with no major injuries, and four more were transferred to another vessel, according to the Coast Guard.

It was not known whether the missing workers were able to make it to one of the rig's lifeboats -- fully enclosed, fire-resistant vessels designed to evacuate people quickly.

The Coast Guardsaid calm weather conditions and warm Gulf waters increase the likelihood of survival for the missing workers.

"We're still searching and there's still a probability that those crew members are alive," Senior Chief Petty Officer Michael O'Berry told CNN on Thursday afternoon.

Carrol Moss told CNN-affiliate WWL that her husband had been rescued from the rig. But before she got the call, there were some anxious moments, she said. "The only thing I was thinking is how am I going to tell my kids that their dad is not coming home," Moss told the affiliate. "The worst goes through your mind. We were just blessed we got the call."

As rescue crews continued searching for survivors, a federal lawsuit was filed Wednesday on behalf of one of the 11 missing workers.

The lawsuit claims negligence by companies connected to the oil rigs that caused the explosion. Transocean and BP are named as defendants.

BP spokesman Tom Mueller declined to comment on the suit, and a spokesman for Transocean did not immediately return a call requesting comment.

The suit does not provide specific details about the blast, but says one man, Shane Roshto of Amite County, Mississippi, "was thrown overboard as a result of the drilling explosion, and his body has not yet been located." His wife, Natalie Roshto, is also named as a plaintiff.

Rose, the Transocean vice president, said Thursday that the company was "deeply saddened" by the incident. "Our thoughts and prayers remain with the family members and our employees."

Transocean's website describes the company as the "world's largest offshore drilling contractor and the leading provider of drilling management services worldwide," with 140 offshore drilling units.

The rig involved in the explosion -- a mobile unit which moves to different locations in the Gulf of Mexico -- had been drilling for oil in its current location since January, said Eileen Angelico, a spokeswoman for Minerals Management Service, the agency that regulates the oil industry in federal waters.

BP spokesman Mueller said dozens of vessels and aircraft were on the way to the scene Thursday afternoon, including equipment to minimize the environmental impact of any spilled oil.

"This is the kind of thing we drill for every year and plan for it, but hope we never have to use it. Today is the day we are going to use it. We are prepared and are moving," he said.

Up to 336,000 gallons could spill into the Gulf, based on the amount of oil the rig pulled out daily, O'Berry told CNN. And up to 700,000 gallons of diesel fuel could also leak, Coast Guard Petty Officer Ashley Butler said.

As cleanup efforts ramped up, government and company officials said they planned to get to the bottom of what caused the explosion.

"It's in our national interest, obviously, to know exactly what went wrong and to make sure something like this never happens again," Deputy Secretary of the Interior David J. Hayes told reporters Thursday afternoon.
