.Sneak Peek: Iconic Santorini, Greece
Jennifer Ashton Ryan
The Iconic Santorini cave hotel seemingly hangs over the rim of Greece’s famed volcanic caldera.
Why Go: Santorini wins travelers for its cliff-top views and whitewashed Cycladic architecture. Highlighting both is the new Iconic Santorini, a collection of 22 whitewashed rooms (from $540, including breakfast) that are literally carved from former cave homes and shops in the quiet village of Imerovigli.
The hotel opens for the season in April with a restaurant, a small gym, and a spa.
Blue-domed churches and charming shops in Imerovigli are an easy walk from neighboring Fira, yet are tucked away from Santorini’s cruise-ship crowds.
.
What to Expect: Terraces with inviting seating arrangements are prime vantages to take in the caldera views. The cave-style rooms, decorated with colorful pillows and exposed wooden beams, are set back from the rim. Guests should be comfortable navigating stairs and the quirks of a boutique hotel’s atmosphere.
.
Upgrade to a suite for more space: Caldera Suites come with heated, jetted outdoor pools perched on the caldera rim; jetted pools in the Grotto Suites are indoors; the Cliff Suite has some of the best views; and the Iconic Suite offers the most square footage.
How to Get There:The hotel is a 15-minute drive from the Santorini airport. (+30.22860.28950,
