The Hellenic Navy (HN) (Greek: Πολεμικό Ναυτικό, Polemikó Naftikó, abbreviated ΠΝ) is the naval force of Greece, part of the Greek Armed Forces. The modern Greek navy has its roots in the naval forces of various Aegean Islands, which fought in the Greek War of Independence. During the periods of monarchy (1833–1924 and 1936–1973) it was known as the Royal Navy (Βασιλικόν Ναυτικόν, Vasilikón Naftikón, abbreviated ΒΝ).The total displacement of all the navy's vessels is approximately 150,000 tons. The motto of the Hellenic Navy is "Μέγα το της Θαλάσσης Κράτος" from Thucydides' account of Pericles' oration on the eve of the Peloponnesian War. This has been roughly translated as "Great is the country that controls the sea". The Hellenic Navy's emblem consists of an anchor in front of a crossed Christian cross and trident, with the cross symbolizing Greek Orthodoxy, and the trident symbolizing Poseidon, the god of the sea in Greek mythology. Pericles' words are written across the top of the emblem. "The navy, as it represents a necessary weapon for Greece, should only be created for war and aim to victory."...............The Hellenic Merchant Marine refers to the Merchant Marine of Greece, engaged in commerce and transportation of goods and services universally. It consists of the merchant vessels owned by Greek civilians, flying either the Greek flag or a flag of convenience. Greece is a maritime nation by tradition, as shipping is arguably the oldest form of occupation of the Greeks and a key element of Greek economic activity since the ancient times. Nowadays, Greece has the largest merchant fleet in the world, which is the second largest contributor to the national economy after tourism and forms the backbone of world shipping. The Greek fleet flies a variety of flags, however some Greek shipowners gradually return to Greece following the changes to the legislative framework governing their operations and the improvement of infrastructure.Blogger Tips and Tricks

MORE than 60 fire-fighters battled a massive blaze near Armadale today, saving several homes from being destroyed.

The fire, which started about 12pm between Mason Rd and Warton Rd in the outer suburban Piara Waters estate, started burning towards Nicholson Rd.

About 3pm, the Fire and Emergency Services Authority issued an emergency warning for nearby residents, saying there was a "threat to lives and homes" and that people should leave the area. Just before 5pm, officials downgraded the situation to "watch and act.

In a statement released at 4.30pm, FESA said residents between Mason Rd, Wright Rd, Armadale Rd and Nicholson Rd were still on alert, although the threat posed to safety had lessened in the past few hours.

The FESA statement read: “Fire-fighters and aerial support have heavily attacked the fire and saved homes in Wright Rd. There is a possible threat to lives and homes as a fire is approaching the area and conditions are changing.”

By 6.30pm, officials gave the area the all clear, saying: "There is no threat to lives or homes, but there is smoke in the area. Although there is no immediate danger you need to be aware and keep up to date".

Today's fire alert is the second for Perth's suburbs in as many days. Yesterday, firefighters battled a blaze that started in Mary Carroll Park, Gosnells.

An estimated five hectares was burnt yesterday, and another fire smaller in scale started in the same park about 3pm today between James St and Swanley St. At 4.30pm, the fire was burning towards Eudoria St but fire-fighters had contained the blaze.

Bushfire advice remains in place, and nearby residents should stay alert and monitor their surroundings.

A FESA spokeswoman said a FESA fire investigation officer was travelling to the park to investigate the cause of the two blazes. Fire crews were on the scene and would continue mopping up operations for several hours.

It was unclear at this stage if it was a flare up from yesterday's fire or if it was deliberately lit, she said.
