The Hellenic Navy (HN) (Greek: Πολεμικό Ναυτικό, Polemikó Naftikó, abbreviated ΠΝ) is the naval force of Greece, part of the Greek Armed Forces. The modern Greek navy has its roots in the naval forces of various Aegean Islands, which fought in the Greek War of Independence. During the periods of monarchy (1833–1924 and 1936–1973) it was known as the Royal Navy (Βασιλικόν Ναυτικόν, Vasilikón Naftikón, abbreviated ΒΝ).The total displacement of all the navy's vessels is approximately 150,000 tons. The motto of the Hellenic Navy is "Μέγα το της Θαλάσσης Κράτος" from Thucydides' account of Pericles' oration on the eve of the Peloponnesian War. This has been roughly translated as "Great is the country that controls the sea". The Hellenic Navy's emblem consists of an anchor in front of a crossed Christian cross and trident, with the cross symbolizing Greek Orthodoxy, and the trident symbolizing Poseidon, the god of the sea in Greek mythology. Pericles' words are written across the top of the emblem. "The navy, as it represents a necessary weapon for Greece, should only be created for war and aim to victory."...............The Hellenic Merchant Marine refers to the Merchant Marine of Greece, engaged in commerce and transportation of goods and services universally. It consists of the merchant vessels owned by Greek civilians, flying either the Greek flag or a flag of convenience. Greece is a maritime nation by tradition, as shipping is arguably the oldest form of occupation of the Greeks and a key element of Greek economic activity since the ancient times. Nowadays, Greece has the largest merchant fleet in the world, which is the second largest contributor to the national economy after tourism and forms the backbone of world shipping. The Greek fleet flies a variety of flags, however some Greek shipowners gradually return to Greece following the changes to the legislative framework governing their operations and the improvement of infrastructure.Blogger Tips and Tricks

No smoke inside Michigan's bars and restaurants...[ 1138 ]

Smokers Take Last Puffs In Bars

The smoke will clear inside Michigan's bars and restaurants. The state's new workplace smoking ban takes effect. Cigar bars, tobacco shops and gaming floors of Detroit's casinos are exempt. Smokers everywhere else will have to take the habit elsewhere. Before the deadline hit, many of them gathered together at local bars to get in their final legal puffs.

Smokers had just a few hours to get in their last puffs at bars and restaurants across the state. Managers at Dagwoods have already put up their no smoking signs and they say they'll start removing ashtrays from the bar. We talked to several smokers earlier.

Some are disappointed they won't be able to light up in their favorite bar anymore, but many others are on board with the ban.

Customer: "I'm out here with my buddy to have the last Michigan bar cigarette."
Smoke 'em if you got 'em. That seems to be the theme for people hitting up local bars Friday night. Andy cease and friends came out to get their last puffs in at Dagwoods before they have to put them out for good.

Customer: "Last smoke in Michigan bars."And even though the guys are occasional smokers, they're still on board the smoking ban train.
Andy Cease, supports smoking ban: "Personally I'm looking forward to it, I can come home from the bar and my clothes won't smell like cigarettes, there's more good things coming out of than bad things."
Kyle Bryan, supports smoking ban: "I think the smoking ban has its place, I like that non-smoking establishments are going to be more widespread."

But not everyone feels the same.
Allen Cox, against smoking ban: "I don't feel good about it at all, I mean, Michigan's one of the last state's to have a smoking ban, so \I guess it's good we've held out this long, but I don't like it."
But despite some smokers being upset, they'll have to snuff out their cigarettes. Dagwoods Manager Randy Farlin thinks the ban will boost his bottom line.

Randy Farlin, Dagwood's Manager: "I think those people that weren't coming in before are more apt to come in now, and the people, the smokers, I don't think they'll hurt the business because they're really not going to go to another bar to smoke there, because they can't do it anywhere
