The Hellenic Navy (HN) (Greek: Πολεμικό Ναυτικό, Polemikó Naftikó, abbreviated ΠΝ) is the naval force of Greece, part of the Greek Armed Forces. The modern Greek navy has its roots in the naval forces of various Aegean Islands, which fought in the Greek War of Independence. During the periods of monarchy (1833–1924 and 1936–1973) it was known as the Royal Navy (Βασιλικόν Ναυτικόν, Vasilikón Naftikón, abbreviated ΒΝ).The total displacement of all the navy's vessels is approximately 150,000 tons. The motto of the Hellenic Navy is "Μέγα το της Θαλάσσης Κράτος" from Thucydides' account of Pericles' oration on the eve of the Peloponnesian War. This has been roughly translated as "Great is the country that controls the sea". The Hellenic Navy's emblem consists of an anchor in front of a crossed Christian cross and trident, with the cross symbolizing Greek Orthodoxy, and the trident symbolizing Poseidon, the god of the sea in Greek mythology. Pericles' words are written across the top of the emblem. "The navy, as it represents a necessary weapon for Greece, should only be created for war and aim to victory."...............The Hellenic Merchant Marine refers to the Merchant Marine of Greece, engaged in commerce and transportation of goods and services universally. It consists of the merchant vessels owned by Greek civilians, flying either the Greek flag or a flag of convenience. Greece is a maritime nation by tradition, as shipping is arguably the oldest form of occupation of the Greeks and a key element of Greek economic activity since the ancient times. Nowadays, Greece has the largest merchant fleet in the world, which is the second largest contributor to the national economy after tourism and forms the backbone of world shipping. The Greek fleet flies a variety of flags, however some Greek shipowners gradually return to Greece following the changes to the legislative framework governing their operations and the improvement of infrastructure.Blogger Tips and Tricks

Residents on an island in Lake Biwa, Japan's biggest lake, have developed a pet food made from black bass and other foreign species of fish that have been blamed for damaging the lake's ecosystem.
Up until now, foreign species of fish removed from the lake have mainly been processed into feed for livestock. But due to the rich nutritional value of the fish, the suggestion of using them to create pet food emerged.
Some 400 to 500 tons of foreign species of fish are retrieved from Lake Biwa each year, and most of the catch is ground up to be used as livestock feed. However, Hiyoshi, a company in the Shiga Prefecture city of Omihachiman that analyzes food, suggested that the fish be used as pet food due to the presence of vitamin E and nutrients such as taurine, an essential dietary requirement of cats. Seeing the opportunity to create jobs, a group on Lake Biwa's Okishima Island started developing a product with the company in February.
The pet food is made from black bass and bluegill fish. After the fish meat is minced and dried it is smoked to take away some of the smell. It can be used as dog or cat food, and doesn't use additives, taking pet owners health preferences into consideration.
Foreign species of fish, which can wreak havoc on ecosystems, and pollution have caused the fish population in Lake Biwa to decline. Fifty years ago, the yearly catch was about 10,000 tons, but in recent years the figure has dropped to about 2,000 tons. Fishermen are also aging, with a local fisheries official commenting that among the 360 residents on Okishima Island, there are no fishermen in their 20s or 30s.
However, there is hope that the pet food business could draw some young people back.
"If the business goes well, then it will probably appeal to the young people who have left the island," said Hatsuro Kawai, 73, chairman of the Okishima Island group that is helping to develop the product.
One 200-gram bag of the pet food is expected to cost between 500 and 600 yen.
