Crested ibises at Ishikawa Zoo to receive weatherfish as 'child allowances'
NOMI, Ishikawa -(Mainichi Japan) May 26, 2010-
In a move based on the central government's child-rearing allowance program, the city government here will start giving each baby Japanese crested ibis at Ishikawa Zoo a "monthly allowance" of four kilograms of weatherfish, an amount equal in value to the 13,000 yen the national government gives per human child.
In January this year, two pairs of crested ibises were moved from the Sado Japanese Crested Ibis Conservation Center in Niigata Prefecture to Ishikawa Zoo for breeding. Since then, a total of 19 eggs have been laid and eight of them have hatched.
The cash-strapped central government, which pays monthly child allowances until the age of 15, may very well envy the Nomi Municipal Government. The weatherfish "child allowances" will only last until August, when the crested ibises become adults.
