The Hellenic Navy (HN) (Greek: Πολεμικό Ναυτικό, Polemikó Naftikó, abbreviated ΠΝ) is the naval force of Greece, part of the Greek Armed Forces. The modern Greek navy has its roots in the naval forces of various Aegean Islands, which fought in the Greek War of Independence. During the periods of monarchy (1833–1924 and 1936–1973) it was known as the Royal Navy (Βασιλικόν Ναυτικόν, Vasilikón Naftikón, abbreviated ΒΝ).The total displacement of all the navy's vessels is approximately 150,000 tons.The motto of the Hellenic Navy is "Μέγα το της Θαλάσσης Κράτος" from Thucydides' account of Pericles' oration on the eve of the Peloponnesian War. This has been roughly translated as "Great is the country that controls the sea". The Hellenic Navy's emblem consists of an anchor in front of a crossed Christian cross and trident, with the cross symbolizing Greek Orthodoxy, and the trident symbolizing Poseidon, the god of the sea in Greek mythology. Pericles' words are written across the top of the emblem. "The navy, as it represents a necessary weapon for Greece, should only be created for war and aim to victory."...............The Hellenic Merchant Marine refers to the Merchant Marine of Greece, engaged in commerce and transportation of goods and services universally. It consists of the merchant vessels owned by Greek civilians, flying either the Greek flag or a flag of convenience. Greece is a maritime nation by tradition, as shipping is arguably the oldest form of occupation of the Greeks and a key element of Greek economic activity since the ancient times. Nowadays, Greece has the largest merchant fleet in the world, which is the second largest contributor to the national economy after tourism and forms the backbone of world shipping. The Greek fleet flies a variety of flags, however some Greek shipowners gradually return to Greece following the changes to the legislative framework governing their operations and the improvement of infrastructure.

Oil Slick Spreads off Gulf Coast

NASA's Aqua satellite captured this image of the Gulf of Mexico on April 25, 2010 using its Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument.

With the Mississippi Delta on the left, the silvery swirling oil slick from the April 20 explosion and subsequent sinking of the Deepwater Horizon drilling platform is highly visible. The rig was located roughly 50 miles southeast of the coast of Louisiana.

The oil slick may be particularly obvious because it is occurring in the sunglint area, where the mirror-like reflection of the Sun off the water gives the Gulf of Mexico a washed-out look.
Oil slicks are notoriously difficult to spot in natural-color (photo-like) satellite imagery because a thin sheen of oil only slightly darkens the already dark blue background of the ocean.

Under unique viewing conditions, oil slicks can become visible in photo-like images, but usually, radar imagery is needed to clearly see a spill from space.

Ο Μπους βγάζει βιβλίο με τα λάθη του

Στα σφάλματα και τις αστοχίες του θα αναφερθεί ο πρώην πρόεδρος των ΗΠΑ Goerge W. Bush, στο βιβλίο του, decision Points, που θα κυκλοφορήσει τον Νοέμβριο του 2010. (σ.σ. Πόσες σελίδες θα είναι άραγε;)

Σύμφωνα με την εκδοτική εταιρεία Crown Publishers, ο πρώην πρόεδρος θα αναφέρεται με “ανατριχιαστικές” λεπτομέρειες που δεν έχουν ειπωθεί για όλα τα σημαντικά ζητήματα της 8χρονης προεδρίας του, που θεωρείται η πιο αποτυχημένη στις ΗΠΑ.

Με τη βοήθεια του κειμενογράφου του Λευκού Οίκου Κρις Μάικλ, ο Τζορτζ Μπους γράφει για τις αποφάσεις που πήρε την 11η Σεπτεμβρίου, τον Τυφώνα Κατρίνα και τον πόλεμο στο Αφγανιστάν και το Ιράκ.

Σύμφωνα με τον εκδότη το βιβλίο προσπαθεί να δικαιολογήσει τις αποφάσεις του και να υπεραμυνθεί των επιλογών του, για τις οποίες έχει υποστεί βαρύτατες κριτικές (και όχι άδικα). Ο ίδιος είχε μετακομίσει από τον Λευκό Οίκο, αφού πρώτα είχε αφήσει μια οικονομία υπό κατάρρευση και μια εξωτερική πολιτική όπου κανένας “σύμμαχος” των ΗΠΑ δεν ήθελε πια να ονομάζεται έτσι – ίσως μόνο η Μεγάλη Βρετανία...

Παράλληλα, δίνει λεπτομέρειες και για την προσωπική του ζωή, όπως το πρόβλημα εθισμού του στο αλκοόλ, αλλά και “πιπεράτες” οικογενειακές στιγμές.

Το εξώφυλλο του βιβλίου δείχνει τον Μπους έξω από τον Λευκό Οίκο με έναν μαύρο χαρτοφύλακα στα χέρια.

Ο Μπους από τη στιγμή που άφησε το αξίωμα του προέδρου δεν είχε μιλήσει ποτέ ανοιχτά και αναλυτικά για την περίοδο της προεδρίας του, αφού εργαζόταν νυχθημερόν για το βιβλίο του που έγραφε στο γραφείο του στο Τέξας.

Ωστόσο, το 2009 σε συνέντευξη του είχε δηλώσει: “Ο σκοπός μου (με αυτό το βιβλίο) είναι να αποδείξω ότι όλοι αυτοί έκαναν λάθος. Θέλω να φέρω τον κόσμο μέσα στο Οβάλ Γραφείο και να αναρωτηθούν αν εκείνοι θα μπορούσαν να κάνουν διαφορετικά”.

Hugh Hefner Saves the Hollywood Sign

Hugh Hefner just pulled a rabbit out of his hat to save Hollywood – the iconic sign, that is.

The Playboy founder has donated the final $900,000 needed to preserve 138 acres behind the film capital's most famous visual symbol on Mount Lee, just as time was running out.

"It would have been a real shame after having restored it if it wound up sold," Hefner, 84, told PEOPLE on Monday at the Hollywood premiere of Iron Man 2, with the legendary 45-foot white letters looming in the background. "It's become something iconic and represents not only the town but represents Hollywood dreams, and I think that's something worth preserving."

Developers have been eyeing the hillside, once owned by Howard Hughes, for luxury mansions, but a nonprofit land-conservation group was given the chance to buy the land for $12.5 million. As an April 30 deadline neared, the group was nearly $1 million short.

"I was aware of the fact that they were raising the money, but I only learned about a week ago that they were running out of time," said Hefner. "They only had about a week and a half left to go."

The sign was built in 1923 as part of a real-estate promotion, originally spelling out "Hollywoodland" (the "land" was removed in 1949). In 1978, after years of neglect, Hefner was one of a number of patrons who donated funds to restore it.

Meanwhile, Hefner continues to develop his own Hollywood fantasy: a feature film chronicling his life, with Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr. potentially in the lead role.

"It would be my hope and dream," said Hefner. "Right after Iron Man first came out, he called me the following week and said, 'When are we going to start the Playboy film?' So, we have to get a good screenplay."

The woman rescued by a homeless man during an assault on a Queens street last week may have known her attacker -- and that's why she hasn't come forward in the case, police sources said yesterday.

Hugo Tale-Yax, 31, a homeless immigrant from Guatemala, died after he intervened in a violent fight between the man and the woman on April 18 in Jamaica.

Newly released video footage taken by nearby surveillance cameras and obtained by The Post appears to show the woman about a half-hour before the attack laughing and stumbling as she's walking with a woman and man down the block.
