The Hellenic Navy (HN) (Greek: Πολεμικό Ναυτικό, Polemikó Naftikó, abbreviated ΠΝ) is the naval force of Greece, part of the Greek Armed Forces. The modern Greek navy has its roots in the naval forces of various Aegean Islands, which fought in the Greek War of Independence. During the periods of monarchy (1833–1924 and 1936–1973) it was known as the Royal Navy (Βασιλικόν Ναυτικόν, Vasilikón Naftikón, abbreviated ΒΝ).The total displacement of all the navy's vessels is approximately 150,000 tons.The motto of the Hellenic Navy is "Μέγα το της Θαλάσσης Κράτος" from Thucydides' account of Pericles' oration on the eve of the Peloponnesian War. Pericles' words are written across the top of the emblem. "The navy, as it represents a necessary weapon for Greece, should only be created for war and aim to victory."...............The Hellenic Merchant Marine refers to the Merchant Marine of Greece, engaged in commerce and transportation of goods and services universally. It consists of the merchant vessels owned by Greek civilians, flying either the Greek flag or a flag of convenience. Greece is a maritime nation by tradition, as shipping is arguably the oldest form of occupation of the Greeks and a key element of Greek economic activity since the ancient times. THE Royal Navy's latest warship is set to sail into the Tyne.
HMS Dauntless – the Navy's most technologically advanced warship – is set for her inaugural visit to her affiliated city of Newcastle on Friday.

The 7,300-tonne Type 45 destroyer and her crew of around 150 – some from South Tyneside – will moor at Northumbrian Quay at about 10am for the start of a five-day visit and a packed programme of events.

Commanding officer Captain Richard Powell is assured of a warm welcome from Tynesiders, who will get their own chance to look around the 152-metre long warship when she opens to visitors on Sunday and Monday from 10am until 3pm.

There will be a number of visits for local schools, sea and combined forces cadets and other youth groups, plus affiliated organisations and local businesses.

Members of the ship's company will also visit the children's ward at Newcastle General Hospital, and the ship's football team will match up against a side from Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service.

The Dauntless rugby team will also play Morpeth in a friendly match.

Visits have also been arranged to affiliate clubs Newcastle United FC and Newcastle Falcons RFC, Northumberland Golf Club and a tour of High House Farm Brewery.

On Saturday night Captain Powell will formally welcome 120 guests – including the Lord Mayor of Newcastle, Coun Mike Cookson – to an official reception, concluding with a ceremonial sunset played by the Royal Marines band.

The ship – which is due to be commissioned into the Royal Navy on June 3 in Portsmouth – will slip her berth at about 10am on Tuesday to return to her ongoing sea-trials programme.

HMS Dauntless is part of the most powerful destroyer class ever built in the UK and one of the most advanced warships in the world.

She is equipped with a state-of the art air defence system which will be able to track and destroy a target the size of a cricket ball travelling three times the speed of sound.

At more than 50m long, Dauntless will have a range of 7,000 nautical miles.

Together with her five sister ships, HMS Dauntless is designed to carry out a variety of tasks across the globe, from air defence role to humanitarian and anti-piracy roles.
