The Hellenic Navy (HN) (Greek: Πολεμικό Ναυτικό, Polemikó Naftikó, abbreviated ΠΝ) is the naval force of Greece, part of the Greek Armed Forces. The modern Greek navy has its roots in the naval forces of various Aegean Islands, which fought in the Greek War of Independence. During the periods of monarchy (1833–1924 and 1936–1973) it was known as the Royal Navy (Βασιλικόν Ναυτικόν, Vasilikón Naftikón, abbreviated ΒΝ).The total displacement of all the navy's vessels is approximately 150,000 tons. The motto of the Hellenic Navy is "Μέγα το της Θαλάσσης Κράτος" from Thucydides' account of Pericles' oration on the eve of the Peloponnesian War. This has been roughly translated as "Great is the country that controls the sea". The Hellenic Navy's emblem consists of an anchor in front of a crossed Christian cross and trident, with the cross symbolizing Greek Orthodoxy, and the trident symbolizing Poseidon, the god of the sea in Greek mythology. Pericles' words are written across the top of the emblem. "The navy, as it represents a necessary weapon for Greece, should only be created for war and aim to victory."...............The Hellenic Merchant Marine refers to the Merchant Marine of Greece, engaged in commerce and transportation of goods and services universally. It consists of the merchant vessels owned by Greek civilians, flying either the Greek flag or a flag of convenience. Greece is a maritime nation by tradition, as shipping is arguably the oldest form of occupation of the Greeks and a key element of Greek economic activity since the ancient times. Nowadays, Greece has the largest merchant fleet in the world, which is the second largest contributor to the national economy after tourism and forms the backbone of world shipping. The Greek fleet flies a variety of flags, however some Greek shipowners gradually return to Greece following the changes to the legislative framework governing their operations and the improvement of infrastructure.Blogger Tips and Tricks

The mystery of how and why Flight 370 went down...[ 3876 ]

Race is on to find  Malaysia airliner's black boxes
March 25, 2014 - Updated 1233 PKT
From Web Edition
CANBERRA: Time is running out to find the crucial keys that could solve the mystery of how and why Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 went down.

After the excruciating 17-day wait for confirmation that the Boeing 777 crashed into the southern Indian Ocean, searchers are racing to locate the so-called black boxes before a battery-powered ping they emit fades away.

By law, the boxes with must be able to send those signals for at least 30 days following a crash. But experts say they can continue making noise for another 15 days or so beyond that, depending upon the strength of the black box battery at the time of the crash.

Without the black boxes — the common name for the voice and data recorders normally attached to a fuselage — it would be virtually impossible for investigators to definitively say what caused the crash.

Now that some debris has possibly been found, here´s what comes next:

NEEDLE IN A HAYSTACK

The location of the plane is still unknown more than two weeks after it crashed, although Malaysian authorities say a British satellite company has pinpointed its last position in the Indian Ocean, where several countries have reported finding floating debris.

It´s now up to experts in ocean currents and weather patterns to give searchers their best estimate on where the plane actually went down, which is where the black boxes — they´re really red cylinders — are likely to be located.

"We´ve got to get lucky," said John Goglia, a former member of the US National Transportation Safety Board. "It´s a race to get to the area in time to catch the black box pinger while it´s still working."

To "catch" the signal, searchers will be putting to use a high-tech listening device loaned by the U.S. Navy.

TOWED PINGER LOCATOR:

One of the Navy´s Towed Pinger Locators is already en route to the search area.

It´s a 30-inch-long cylindrical microphone that´s slowly towed underwater in a grid pattern behind a commercial ship. It will pick up any black box ping emitted from, on average, 1 mile away — but could hear a ping from 2 miles away depending upon a number of factors, from ocean conditions to topography to if the black boxes are buried or not.

The listening device is attached to about 20,000 feet of cable and is guided through the ocean depths by a yellow, triangular carrier with a shark fin on top. It looks like a stingray and has a wingspan of 3 feet.

The device sends data up that long cable every half second, where both human operators and computers aboard a ship carefully listen for any strong signals and record a ping´s location. The ship keeps towing the device over the grid so that operators can triangulate the strongest pings — and hopefully locate the exact location of the black boxes.

Aside from the Towed Pinger Locator, an Australian navy support vessel, the Ocean Shield, is expected to arrive in the search zone within three or four days, officials said.

It´s equipped with acoustic detection equipment that will also listen for pings.

IF THE PINGS AREN´T HEARD:

If no strong signals are located before the battery on the black boxes fades away, then searchers must move on to using side-scan sonar via devices that send sounds to the sea´s depths and analyze the echo return to map the ocean floor. That allows experts to look for any abnormalities in the seabed or any shape that wouldn´t normally be associated with the area.

The sonar devices can be towed behind a ship or used with unmanned mini submarines that can dive to the ocean floor for about 20 hours at a time, scanning the search area, mapping the ocean and looking for the wreckage.

This is how searchers found the wreckage of Air France Flight 447, which went down in 2009 in the Atlantic between Brazil´s northeast coast and western Africa. Underwater search vehicles scanned the mountainous sea floor and sent data back up to experts aboard ships that stayed at sea for a month at a time.

Finally, evidence of possible debris was detected by sonar. Another underwater vehicle with a special high-resolution video camera was sent in to allow scientists to visually inspect the area.

In the case of the Air France jet, it took more than $40 million, four lengthy searches and nearly two years before the plane and the black boxes were found. (AP)

Massive mudslide in a rural part of Washington ...[ 3875 ]

108 people may be missing in Washington state mudslide, authorities said

Authorities are searching for more bodies after a massive mudslide in a rural part of Washington state killed at least eight and possibly left more than 100 missing, while crews battle uneven ground and rising waters.
.
A 1-square-mile mudslide struck Saturday morning in Snohomish County, critically injuring several people and destroying about 30 several homes. Eight bodies have been pulled from the scene and authorities described the search for additional survivors to be "grim."
John Pennington, emergency response managing director, said there are reports of up to 108 people missing in the mudslide but noted that number is unconfirmed.
"This is a large scale disaster event," Pennington said. "We have 108 individual names, or likeness ... It’s a soft 108."
"It was Saturday and probably a higher number than what you would see on a week day," he said of the victims during a press conference Monday. Pennington said it remains unclear how many structures were impacted at the time.
Crews were able to get to the muddy, tree-strewn area after geologists flew over in a helicopter and determined it was safe enough for emergency responders and technical rescue personnel to search for possible survivors, Snohomish County Fire District 21 Chief Travis Hots said Sunday evening.
"We didn't see or hear any signs of life out there today," he said, adding that they did not search the entire debris field, only drier areas safe to traverse. "It's very disappointing to all emergency responders on scene."
Snohomish County Fire Chief Travis Hots said the search under way is technically still a "rescue" operation but added that no survivors have been found since Saturday.
Before crews could get onto the debris field late Sunday morning, they looked for signs of life by helicopter. Authorities initially said it was too dangerous to send rescuers out on foot.
Rescuers' hopes of finding more survivors were buoyed late Saturday when they heard people yelling for help, but they were unable to reach anyone. The soupy mud was so thick and deep that searchers had to turn back.
The slide wiped through what neighbors described as a former fishing village of small homes -- some nearly 100 years old.
As the search for the missing continued, authorities said some may have been able to get out on their own. The number unaccounted for could change because some people may have been in cars and on roads when the slide hit just before 11 a.m. Saturday, authorities said.
.
Officials described the mudslide as "a big wall of mud and debris." It blocked about a mile of State Route 530 near the town of Oso, about 55 miles north of Seattle. It was reported to be about 15 feet deep in some areas.
Authorities believe the slide was caused by ground made unstable by recent heavy rainfall.
.
Washington Gov. Jay Inslee described the scene as "a square mile of total devastation" after flying over the disaster area midday Sunday. He assured families that everything was being done to find their missing loved ones.
.
"There is a full scale, 100 percent aggressive rescue going on right now," said Inslee, who proclaimed a state of emergency.
The slide blocked the North Fork of the Stillaguamish River. With the water pooling behind the debris, authorities worried about downstream flooding and issued an evacuation notice Saturday. The water had begun to seep through the blockage Sunday afternoon, alleviating some concerns.
.
Snohomish County officials said Sunday that residents could return home during daylight hours. Even though the evacuation had been lifted, Inslee urged residents to remain alert.
The National Weather Service issued a flash flood watch for Snohomish County through Monday afternoon.
.
Shari Ireton, a spokeswoman for the Snohomish County sheriff's office, said Sunday that a total of eight people were injured in the slide.
.
A 6-month-old boy and an 81-year-old man remained in critical condition Sunday morning at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. Hospital spokeswoman Susan Gregg said two men, ages 37 and 58, were in serious condition, while a 25-year-old woman was upgraded to satisfactory condition.
.
Bruce Blacker, who lives just west of the slide, doesn't know the whereabouts of six neighbors.
"It's a very close knit community," Blacker said as he waited at an Arlington roadblock before troopers let him through. There were almost 20 homes in the neighborhood that was destroyed, he said.
Search-and-rescue help came from around the region, including the Washington State Patrol and the Army Corps of Engineers. More than 100 were at the scene.
.
Evacuation shelters were set up at Post Middle School in Arlington and the Darrington Community Center.
Dane Williams, 30, who lives a few miles from the mudslide, spent Saturday night at a Red Cross shelter at the Arlington school.
He said he saw a few "pretty distraught" people at the shelter who didn't know the fate of loved ones who live in the stricken area.
"It makes me want to cry," Williams said Sunday.

Hundreds of Egyptians Sentenced to Death in Killing of a Police Officer

CAIRO — A criminal court in the Egyptian city of Minya sentenced 529 detainees to death on Monday after a single session of their mass trial, convicting them of murder for the killing of a police officer in the rioting last summer after the military ouster of former President Mohamed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood.
.
Legal experts called the case the largest mass trial or conviction in the history of modern Egypt. It also was a surprising acceleration of the nine-month-old crackdown on Mr. Morsi’s Islamist supporters and liberal dissenters that has followed his removal last July.
.
“We have never heard of anything of this magnitude before, inside or outside of Egypt, that was within a judicial system — not just a mass execution,” said Karim Medhat Ennarah, a researcher at the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights who specializes in criminal justice.
“It is quite ridiculous,” he said, arguing that it would be impossible to prove five hundred people each played a meaningful role in the killing of a single police officer, especially after just one session of the trial. “Clearly this is an attempt to intimidate and terrorize the opposition, and specifically the Islamist opposition, but would the judge get so deeply involved in politics up to this point?”

Lawyers said the verdict was almost certain to be overturned on appeal. About four hundred of those convicted are fugitives who were sentenced in absentia; under Egyptian law they will be entitled to a retrial if they are apprehended.
.
The verdict was the latest in a string of harsh and speedy sentences against supposed Islamist supporters of the deposed president, including a ten-day trial that recently ended in sentences of 17 years each for a group of student protesters. News reports said another similar mass trial in Minya, including six hundred defendants accused of violence against the new military backed government, was set to begin Tuesday.
.
Legal analysts suggested that the judges issuing the verdicts might be caught up in the fervor of animosity toward Mr. Morsi’s Islamist supporters that has swept other segments of society since his ouster, and that they might also be acting on instructions from security officials, moving voluntarily to curry favor with the new authorities.
Minya is an Islamist stronghold in the rural areas upstream of Cairo along the Nile. Monday’s decision may indicate a determination by prosecutors and judges to deal more harshly with Islamists in the places where they constitute the most serious threat to the new order.
Even though the sentences were almost certain to be reduced, “the staggering harshness and speed of the verdict still show how profoundly the basic institutions of the Egyptian state are malfunctioning,” Nathan Brown, an expert on the Egyptian judiciary at George Washington University, wrote in an email. “The fact that cooler heads are likely to weigh in is only limited consolation for the degree to which mindless repression still seems to be the order of the day.”
Egyptian state news media described the defendants as members of the Muslim Brotherhood, the Islamist group that backed Mr. Morsi and dominated parliamentary elections two years ago. After the removing Mr. Morsi last summer, the military-led government killed more than a thousand of his supporters in mass shootings at demonstrations against the takeover, and since then it has arrested many thousands of others.
.
Brotherhood, the Islamist group that backed Mr. Morsi and dominated Egypt’s first free elections, declaring it a terrorist group and subjecting any of its members or supporters to heavy penalties. The government has also issued another law criminalizing participation in unauthorized street demonstrations, with jail sentences for organizers.
The state newspaper Al Ahram reported that the verdict came at the start of the second session of the trial. The paper said that the 529 defendants were convicted of killing one police officer, of the attempted killing of two others, and of participating in rioting that destroyed a police station. Sixteen defendants were acquitted, the newspaper said.
The conviction on Monday followed the release on bail the previous day of a celebrated activist and blogger, Alaa Abd el-Fattah, who had been jailed for three months on charges of organizing an unauthorized protest in Cairo. He continues to await trial and a possible jail sentence.
Also on Monday, another court in Cairo was scheduled to continue the trial of several journalists for the Pan-Arab news channel Al Jazeera who have been charged with broadcasting false reports of unrest in Egypt as part of an Islamist conspiracy to bring down the new government. At least one of the Egyptian journalists has been imprisoned since August. Three others who worked for Al Jazeera’s English-language affiliate, including journalists known for their work at CNN and the BBC, were detained in December. At least two were arrested in a Cairo hotel suite that they used as a makeshift studio.
.
The decision in Minya came as Egypt awaited a formal announcement of a presidential run by Field Marshall Abdul-Fattah el-Sisi, the defense minister who led Mr. Morsi’s ouster. Field Marshall Sisi has given every indication that an announcement is imminent, and he is the favorite in the election. Several would-be challengers have dropped out of the race, questioning its fairness or credibility. Parliamentary elections are expected to follow and the military-led government may seek to keep a tight lid on the Islamist opposition until those polls have been completed.
