 Chaos in Cairo, 250 killed

Egyptian security forces moved in Wednesday on two massive makeshift camps that supporters of deposed President Mohamed Morsy had set up, bulldozing tents and escorting away hundreds of protesters.

Within three hours of the raid, forces had cleared the smaller of the two camps -- the Nahda camp, near the Cairo University campus.

But the larger -- near the Rabaa al-Adawiya mosque in eastern Cairo -- has proven trickier, with forces facing heavy resistance. The military called in its special forces.

In the chaos of the raids, it was impossible for CNN to verify the claims and counter claims of casualties.

The Muslim Brotherhood said 200 Morsy supporters were killed and more than 8,000 injured.

The Health Ministry put the number at seven protesters dead and 78 wounded.

The Interior Ministry said that on the government side, two security officials were killed and nine injured while trying to disperse the protesters.

The government blocked all roads leading to the Rabaa camp, and suspended rail service to Cairo.

The Brotherhood said it was to prevent more of its members from streaming into the city.

A new war zone

The raids began shortly after 6 a.m. (12 a.m. ET) at the two camps.

By 8:45 a.m.,all that remained at the Nahda camp were remnants of torn-down tents.

But it was a different picture at Rabaa, where protester Hassan Al Qabana said the location was facing a "full-on assault."

One of the main entrances to the Rabaa camp looked like a war zone. Bursts of gunfire pierced through the thick smoke and tear gas that filled the air. Some of the gunfire sounded like it came from automatic weapons.

Many cried or wailed, denouncing military leaders and pointing to bullet holes. Some of the injured -- or possibly dead -- were ushered away on stretchers to a makeshift clinic.

IRIS Preps for Launch

The fully integrated spacecraft and science instrument for NASA's Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) mission is seen in a clean room at the Lockheed Martin Space Systems Sunnyvale, Calif. facility. The solar arrays are deployed in the configuration they will assume when in orbit. IRIS is scheduled to launch on June 26, 2013.

Understanding the interface between the photosphere and corona remains a fundamental challenge in solar and heliospheric science. The IRIS mission opens a window of discovery into this crucial region by tracing the flow of energy and plasma through the chromosphere and transition region into the corona using spectrometry and imaging.

IRIS is designed to provide significant new information to increase our understanding of energy transport into the corona and solar wind and provide an archetype for all stellar atmospheres.

The unique instrument capabilities, coupled with state of the art 3-D modeling, will fill a large gap in our knowledge of this dynamic region of the solar atmosphere.

The mission will extend the scientific output of existing heliophysics spacecraft that follow the effects of energy release processes from the sun to Earth.

Brazil sends national security force to quell protests

Riot police tried to quell protests in the city of Sao Paulo on Tuesday

Brazil's government says it will deploy a national security force to five major cities after a wave of protests which has seen almost a quarter of a million people demand better public services.

Members of the national force will be sent to Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, Bahia, Ceara and the capital, Brasilia.
All of the cities are hosting games in Fifa's Confederations Cup.
The announcement comes after riot police and protesters clashed in fresh protests on Tuesday in Sao Paulo.
Brazil's ministry of justice said that Recife was the only Confederations Cup host city not to request the support of the National Public Security Force (FNSP).

• Created in 2004 as a joint co-operation of various Brazilian public safety forces
• Led by the police commissioner of Brazil's Federal Police
• Deployed in cases of "social unrest and exceptional situations in Brazilian states when public order is challenged"

A source in the ministry said it would be up to local governments to decide how long the FNSP would stay.

Shops and banks in Brazil's largest city, Sao Paulo, were vandalised on Tuesday by groups of masked activists, who fought other demonstrators trying to stop the violence.
The protest was the latest in a wave of demonstrations engulfing at least a dozen cities.
Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff said she was proud that so many people were fighting for a better country.
The protests were sparked by anger at a rise in public transport fare prices in Sao Paulo on 2 June but have since mushroomed into much broader discontent with high levels of corruption, the poor state of the health and education services and the high cost of living.
They are the largest since 1992, when people took to the streets to demand the impeachment of then-President Fernando Collor de Mello.

On June 18, 1983, Sally Ride became the first American woman to fly in space when the space shuttle Challenger launched on mission STS-7.

As one of the three mission specialists on the STS-7 mission, she played a vital role in helping the crew deploy communications satellites, conduct experiments and make use of the first Shuttle Pallet Satellite.
