The Hellenic Navy (HN) (Greek: Πολεμικό Ναυτικό, Polemikó Naftikó, abbreviated ΠΝ) is the naval force of Greece, part of the Greek Armed Forces. The modern Greek navy has its roots in the naval forces of various Aegean Islands, which fought in the Greek War of Independence. During the periods of monarchy (1833–1924 and 1936–1973) it was known as the Royal Navy (Βασιλικόν Ναυτικόν, Vasilikón Naftikón, abbreviated ΒΝ).The total displacement of all the navy's vessels is approximately 150,000 tons. The motto of the Hellenic Navy is "Μέγα το της Θαλάσσης Κράτος" from Thucydides' account of Pericles' oration on the eve of the Peloponnesian War. This has been roughly translated as "Great is the country that controls the sea". The Hellenic Navy's emblem consists of an anchor in front of a crossed Christian cross and trident, with the cross symbolizing Greek Orthodoxy, and the trident symbolizing Poseidon, the god of the sea in Greek mythology. Pericles' words are written across the top of the emblem. "The navy, as it represents a necessary weapon for Greece, should only be created for war and aim to victory."...............The Hellenic Merchant Marine refers to the Merchant Marine of Greece, engaged in commerce and transportation of goods and services universally. It consists of the merchant vessels owned by Greek civilians, flying either the Greek flag or a flag of convenience. Greece is a maritime nation by tradition, as shipping is arguably the oldest form of occupation of the Greeks and a key element of Greek economic activity since the ancient times. Nowadays, Greece has the largest merchant fleet in the world, which is the second largest contributor to the national economy after tourism and forms the backbone of world shipping. The Greek fleet flies a variety of flags, however some Greek shipowners gradually return to Greece following the changes to the legislative framework governing their operations and the improvement of infrastructure.Blogger Tips and Tricks

Fresh Syrian mortar fire'...[ 2955 ]

Turkey 'responds to fresh Syrian mortar fire'

NEWS MINDL EAST /

Turkey has fired into Syria for a fourth day after a Syrian mortar landed near a Turkish village, reports say.
Turkish troops responded immediately after the mortar landed near the village of Guvecci in Hatay province, according to Turkey's Anadolu Agency.
Turkey has been firing into Syria since Syrian mortar fire killed five Turkish civilians on Wednesday.
It was the first time Turkey has taken military action across the border since the Syrian uprising began.
Early on Saturday, the Anadolu Agency said the Syrian mortar had landed over the border during intense fighting between government troops and rebels in Syria's Idlib province.
The rebels are fighting to topple Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's government in an uprising that began in March last year.
There were no immediate reports of casualties on the Turkish side.
Following the killing of two women and three children in the Turkish border town of Akcakale this week, Turkey's parliament authorised troops to launch cross-border operations against Syria and strike at Syrian targets for a period of one year.
The UN Security Council said the incident showed the "grave impact" of the Syrian crisis on "regional peace and stability".
On Friday, Turkey moved tanks and anti-aircraft missiles into Akcakale, though Turkey's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said his country did not want war.

Greece to Finalize Deal With Troika ...[ 2953 ]

Greece Races to Finalize Deal With Troika

ATHENS—Greece was racing to secure a deal on reforms with a troika of international inspectors Friday that would allow fresh aid to the country, but European officials signaled that a decision on the aid could be delayed further.
After five hours of talks Friday, no deal was reached and the two sides will meet again Saturday morning, a senior finance ministry official said.
-
Greece has this week been locked in negotiations with representatives from the International Monetary Fund, the European Union and the European Central Bank—also known as the troika—over a two-year, €13.5 billion ($17.6 billion) austerity plan ahead of a meeting Monday of euro-zone finance ministers, where a final agreement on the cuts and tax measures looks increasingly unlikely.
-
"The government and the troika are working on a 24-hour basis so that at Monday's Eurogroup meeting that will take note of progress made and Greece is put on the summit's agenda," said a finance ministry official.
European leaders are expected to meet Oct. 18 and Oct. 19 in Brussels, where the Greek government hopes they will approve the next €31 billion aid tranche to the country under the terms of its latest €173 billion bailout.

Despite optimism from Athens that a decision on its aid tranche will soon be made before the country runs out of cash by the end of November, a senior euro-zone official in Brussels ruled out any developments at next week's finance ministers' meeting.
He said there is still much work to do and it will take time for the troika of Greece's official lenders to finish their report on Greece.
-
He said no final decision on a Greece disbursement is likely within "a week or two" after next Monday's Eurogroup meeting, a signal that a decision may well not come until next month.
-
Talks on the cuts in Athens are continuing with the troika disputing measures of some €2.5 billion in the austerity plan to be implemented over the next two years. The troika is also pushing Greece to front load more of those measures with the bulk of the spending cuts—some €9 billion—to be made next year. In the 2013 draft budget submitted to parliament earlier this week, the Greek government penciled in some €7.8 billion worth of austerity measures for next year, with the balance to come in 2014.
-
According to several Greek government officials, the talks Friday did lead to some progress, particularly on privatizations and structural reforms that Greece must also undertake.
Athens hopes to help solve some of its economic problems through political channels; German Chancellor Angela Merkel is set to visit Athens on Tuesday, marking the first visit to Greece by a German chancellor in five years.
"The visit…will definitely be a further step in important future European decisions," said Greek government spokesman Simos Kedikoglou in a statement. In separate remarks, Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras said the visit was a "positive development."

USA, the first presidential debate...[ 2952 ]

GOP sees Mitt Romney debate performance as new boost for his candidacy

DENVER — The solid verdict for Mitt Romney following the first presidential debate — on style points, at a minimum — has pushed the Obama campaign to rethink strategy and the Republican team to reload.

The much-anticipated debate at the University of Denver on Wednesday surprised advisers in both camps, both because of Obama’s passive approach, and for Romney’s aggressive, crisp, and confident attack.
How this performance, the most widely viewed event of the campaign so far, affects the race will become apparent in coming days as new polls are released in the key swing states where the president has built a lead. Another milestone in the campaign will be the release Friday morning of updated monthly jobless figures.
But the debate disparity between Obama and Romney has prompted immediate rethinking among the president’s advisers and a reenergized push to build on momentum among Republicans.
“There is some strategic judgment that has to be made, and we’ll make it,” said David Axelrod, senior adviser to the Obama campaign. “I’m sure that he will consider his approach moving forward.”
Axelrod and other campaign officials likened Romney’s showing to “theater” and countered that Obama was focused on providing clarity to his vision for the country. That approach avoided references to Romney’s links to Bain Capital, the “47 percent” video, and women’s health issues — all of which have been assailed by Obama’s ads — and left observers from both parties stunned by the omission.
David Plouffe, a senior Obama campaign adviser, dismissed the importance of using the debate to attack Romney’s comments about the 47 percent of Americans he had described as “victims” who believe they are entitled to government handouts. That remark, delivered at a private fund-raiser, “is a fully known thing that’s baked into the cake,” Plouffe said.
“Sure, there might have been an exchange where that came up,” he said. “But our view, again, was to say where we want to take the country on the economy.”
Romney supporters were elated by his performance.
“It was Mitt Romney taking a vital shot to show the country who he really is and to puncture the image of him created by a couple of hundred million dollars of negative advertising,” said Mike Murphy, the chief strategist for Romney’s 2002 gubernatorial campaign.
“They saw a 3-D Mitt Romney, with a lot to say, a vibe of enthusiasm, and a lot of ideas. The president looked like a midlevel bureaucrat in the old Soviet Union reading the crop report.”
‘‘Victory is in sight,’’ Romney said in an e-mail appeal to supporters for donations. He then flew to Virginia, where he sought to capitalize on debate excitement in a rally with running mate Paul Ryan and country singer Trace Adkins.
Obama, too, returned to the stump, showing no reticence in attacking Romney in a rally in Denver .
“When I got onto the stage, I met this very spirited fellow who claimed to be Mitt Romney,” Obama said to laughter. “But it couldn’t have been Mitt Romney, because the real Mitt Romney has been running around the country for the last year promising $5 trillion in tax cuts that favor the wealthy. The fellow on stage last night said he didn’t know anything about that.”
A CBS News poll of uncommitted voters, conducted before and after the 90-minute debate, indicated Romney had made great strides in critical areas in the first face-to-face debate.
Before the debate, when asked whether Romney “cares about your needs and problems,” 30 percent agreed and 63 percent disagreed. After, the numbers flipped, with 68 percent saying Romney cares and 36 percent saying he does not.
Overall, 56 percent said they viewed him in a better light after the debate; 11 percent said their opinion of him was worse.
Democratic strategists conceded that polls might tighten toward Romney in the short term, but that his new supporters probably would have committed to him anyway. Plouffe indicated that any bump is likely to be too little, too late.
“Is he going to take the lead in Ohio?” Plouffe asked. “If he doesn’t, he’s not going to be president.”
Romney’s performance did give wavering conservatives a solid reason to declare their allegiance, said Tad Devine, a Democratic strategist who advised presidential candidates Al Gore and John F. Kerry.
“They’ve now got the letter of transit out of Casablanca,” Devine said, referring to the famed movie. “They’re in the plane and on their way.”
Ralph Reed, who once mobilized the Christian Coalition and is trying to turn out conservative voters with the Faith and Freedom Coalition, praised Romney’s “coherent vision."Continued...

Hong Kong ferry tragedy..[ 2951 ]

HK firm says ferry in tragedy passed inspection

HONG KONG (AP) — An official with the ferry company involved in a collision that killed 38 people said Wednesday that the vessel recently passed inspection, but he had no details about how the crash occurred.
Nelson Ng, general manager of Hong Kong and Kowloon (Ferry) Holdings, said the company has not been able to talk to the captain of its ferry, who has been hospitalized since Monday's crash.
-
Police have arrested seven crew members from both boats, including the captains, on suspicion of operating the vessels unsafely, but they have not alleged any specific wrongdoing the led to the crash.
The 38 people killed were on a boat owned by a utility company that was taking about 120 of its workers and their families to watch fireworks when it collided with the ferry and partially sank.
The ferry was damaged but made it to port. About 100 people on both vessels were taken to hospitals for injuries.
Ng said the ferry, the Sea Smooth, had no problems when it passed a government-required inspection last month. Echoing promises from the power company Tuesday, he said the ferry company "will absolutely chase the reasons behind the incident."
Though he said he lacked information about the crash, Ng bristled at the power company's claim that the ferry continued on its way without helping the other vessel.
-
"I think, at this stage, to say that we left without a backward glance, there is a little problem with that," Ng said. "Even according to some news reports, we immediately stayed at the scene" after the crash, he said.
Salvage crews raised the half-submerged Lamma IV using three crane barges and later towed it the island's shoreline. Heavy damage was visible, with part of the compartment at the stern torn away and railings bent and twisted.
-
Police have arrested three crew members from the Lamma IV and four from the Sea Smooth. Police Commissioner Tsang Wai-hung said both crews are suspected of having not "exercised the care required of them by law," but he did not elaborate.
The crash was Hong Kong's deadliest accident in more than 15 years and its worst maritime accident in more than 40. Large-scale accidents are rare in a semiautonomous enclave off mainland China that has one of Asia's most advanced infrastructures and economies with first-rate public services.
 -
Some relatives of the dead went to the scene off Hong Kong island's southwestern coast to toss spirit money in honor of the victims on Tuesday, while others waited at the morgue for news about loved ones.
Yuen Sui-see, the director of operations of Power Assets Holdings, which owns the boat's owner, Hong Kong Electric, said the Lamma IV was carrying 121 passengers and three crew members, well below its capacity of more than 200.
Power Assets Holdings officials said emergency payments of 200,000 Hong Kong dollars ($25,800) would be provided to the family of each person killed.
-
The companies are part of the business empire of Li Ka-shing, Asia's richest man. He visited a hospital Tuesday and told reporters he felt sorry. "I don't want to say too much. I just know that many people have passed away," he said on Cable TV Hong Kong.
