The Hellenic Navy (HN) (Greek: Πολεμικό Ναυτικό, Polemikó Naftikó, abbreviated ΠΝ) is the naval force of Greece, part of the Greek Armed Forces. The modern Greek navy has its roots in the naval forces of various Aegean Islands, which fought in the Greek War of Independence. During the periods of monarchy (1833–1924 and 1936–1973) it was known as the Royal Navy (Βασιλικόν Ναυτικόν, Vasilikón Naftikón, abbreviated ΒΝ).The total displacement of all the navy's vessels is approximately 150,000 tons. The motto of the Hellenic Navy is "Μέγα το της Θαλάσσης Κράτος" from Thucydides' account of Pericles' oration on the eve of the Peloponnesian War. This has been roughly translated as "Great is the country that controls the sea". The Hellenic Navy's emblem consists of an anchor in front of a crossed Christian cross and trident, with the cross symbolizing Greek Orthodoxy, and the trident symbolizing Poseidon, the god of the sea in Greek mythology. Pericles' words are written across the top of the emblem. "The navy, as it represents a necessary weapon for Greece, should only be created for war and aim to victory."...............The Hellenic Merchant Marine refers to the Merchant Marine of Greece, engaged in commerce and transportation of goods and services universally. It consists of the merchant vessels owned by Greek civilians, flying either the Greek flag or a flag of convenience. Greece is a maritime nation by tradition, as shipping is arguably the oldest form of occupation of the Greeks and a key element of Greek economic activity since the ancient times. Nowadays, Greece has the largest merchant fleet in the world, which is the second largest contributor to the national economy after tourism and forms the backbone of world shipping. The Greek fleet flies a variety of flags, however some Greek shipowners gradually return to Greece following the changes to the legislative framework governing their operations and the improvement of infrastructure.Blogger Tips and Tricks

France, manhunt under way ...[ 2799 ]

Huge manhunt under way after fatal France shootings

The BBC's Christian Fraser in Toulouse says there is a "sense of anxiety" across France
BBC.,,

One of the biggest manhunts in recent French history is under way after four people were shot dead at a Jewish school in Toulouse.
Police have linked the attack to two shootings last week in which three soldiers of North African descent died.
The same gun and the same scooter were used in all the attacks, but the gunman has not been identified, officials say.
French schools held a minute's silence on Tuesday. The area is on the highest level of terrorism alert.

Analysis

It is now established beyond doubt that the three incidents in Toulouse and Montauban were the work of the same man. He used the same gun, rode the same 500cc Yamaha scooter, and acted with the same cold-blooded brutality.
But why the widely differing choice of targets: soldiers and Jewish children? One theory is that the man is a deranged far-rightwinger. It is noted that the three dead soldiers were of North African origin, and a fourth who was injured is from the French Caribbean.
The killer has a clear affinity with guns. Could he be a neo-Nazi type - maybe an ex-soldier or a member of the criminal underworld - with a hatred of all minorities, Jews and Muslims?
Some have gone further - indirectly pointing the finger at President Sarkozy for recently raising sensitive issues such as halal and kosher meat in the run-up to the presidential election. This tactic, they say, gives credibility to the far-right and 'delegitimises' the Muslim and Jewish communities.
The problem with this theory is that it is not yet established that the killer deliberately targeted Muslim soldiers.
It is the first time in the country's history that "scarlet alert" has been declared.
The measure enables the authorities to disrupt daily life and implement sweeping security measures, including mixed police-military patrols, powers to suspend public transport and close schools.
Guards are being posted outside all faith-based schools, as well as all Jewish and Muslim religious buildings.
About 200 investigators from Paris are pursuing two main lines of inquiry - an Islamist motive or the far right.
But Interior Minister Claude Gueant told French radio the authorities did not know who the killer was.
"For now, we carry on working. We're no further than that," he said.
The minister said "a witness saw a small video camera around the killer's neck" and the authorities were combing the internet for any possible footage.
Mr Gueant said this was an important clue allowing police to build a psychological profile of the killer, who he described as "clearly very cold, determined and master of his actions".
But there was no sign police were near making an arrest.
Mother's blame
A teacher and three children were shot dead at the Ozar Hatorah school in Toulouse, and a teenage boy was seriously injured.
The shootings took place as parents were taking their children to the school on Monday.
"This man alighted from his moped and, as he was outside the school, he shot at everybody who was near him, children or adults," local prosecutor Michel Valet told journalists.
Rabbi Jonathan Sandler and his family
Rabbi Jonathan Sandler and two of his children were among those killed at the school
The scooter - a black Yamaha - was stolen in Toulouse five days before the first shooting. Its number plate was picked up by closed-circuit TV cameras at the school, police sources said.
The dead were Jonathan Sandler, a 30-year-old rabbi and teacher of religion originally from Jerusalem, and his two sons, aged four and five.
The fourth person killed was a seven-year-old girl, Myriam Monsonego, daughter of the head teacher. She died in her father's arms.
All the dead were dual French-Israeli nationals and will be buried in Israel, the Israeli foreign ministry said.
Miriam Monsonego, daughter of school headmaster Rabbi Yaacov Monsonego, who was killed at the Ozar Hatorah School in Toulouse.
Miriam Monsonego, daughter of the school headmaster, was also killed
A 17-year-old boy was seriously hurt. Initially, the killer used a 9mm gun, but when it jammed, he switched to a .45 calibre pistol.
Police say the .45 was the same gun used to kill three soldiers in two separate shootings in Toulouse and nearby Montauban last week. All three were of North African or Caribbean origin.
The mother of a girl at the Toulouse school told the BBC she was angry with the authorities who she said had not taken last week's incidents seriously enough and had "lost time to look for this man".
The BBC's Hugh Schofield in Paris says not since the early 1980s have there been lethal attacks like this in France on Jewish targets. And even then, children were never the primary victims, he says.
All the candidates in the French presidential election have suspended campaigning.
President Nicolas Sarkozy said his campaign would remain suspended until Wednesday at the earliest, when he is due to attend the soldiers' funerals.
As well as Mr Sarkozy, opposition Socialist candidate Francois Hollande visited Toulouse to offer his condolences. Far-right candidate Marine Le Pen called on the authorities to do everything to prevent another such attack.

North Korea plans satellite launch...[ 2798 ]

North Korea invites foreigners to satellite launch

By the CNN Wire Staff
March 17, 2012 -- Updated 1404 GMT (2204 HKT)

(CNN) -- North Korea will invite foreign space experts and journalists to witness the launch of a satellite that the United States and other nations see as a provocation, the state-run Korean Central News Agency said Saturday.
-
The apparent attempt at North Korean transparency comes amid a flurry of condemnations of its planned launch because it uses ballistic missile technology.
Pyongyang is set to launch next month an "Earth observation" satellite using a carrier rocket, a move that would potentially violate a United Nations Security Council ban on nuclear testing.
-
The planned launch has put at risk a deal struck last month between the United States and North Korea in which Pyongyang agreed to halt nuclear tests, long-range missile launches and enrichment activities in exchange for food aid.
-
At the time of the food aid agreement, under which North Korea would receive 240,000 metric tons of foodstuffs, the United States told Pyongyang that such a launch would be contrary to the accord, the U.S. State Department said.
There was no immediate comment from the nations critical of the launch about the North Korean invitation to outsiders.

U.S. 'Concerned' About Iranian Flights to Syria
MOSCOW, March 17 (RIA Novosti)

The United States has expressed concern that Iranian cargo planes overflying Iraq may be shipping weapons to Syria.
"We are concerned about the overflight of Iraq by Iranian cargo flights headed to Syria," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told reporters on Friday, adding that the U.S. and other countries were working with the Baghdad government to be "absolutely sure about any cargo that's overflying its territory."
-
Nuland said Iranian arms exports are subject to a UN arms embargo.
"Any arms sent to the Syrian regime at this time would obviously be used in the brutal repression that the regime is exacting on its own people," Nuland said.
-
The UN says more than 8,000 have died since anti-government protests erupted a year ago.
Earlier on Friday, Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki issued a statement saying Iranian cargo flights were transporting only humanitarian aid.
"Iraq does not allow its land or its skies to be a passage for weapons in any direction, and from any source," Maliki said.
-
The U.S. has made "several requests" in the past few months to Baghdad, to either stop Iranian flights, or allow the aircraft to be inspected, the Washington Times said on Thursday, citing an unnnamed U.S. official.
-
On Tuesday, an Iranian cargo plane heading to Syria's second city of Aleppo was told to land in Turkey amid concerns that it may be carrying arms. It was allowed to leave after search teams found that it was transporting 150 tons of food.
-
Meanwhile, the UN and Arab League envoy on Syria, Kofi Annan, said on Friday international teams would visit Damascus this weekend to "pursue the discussions on the proposals we left on the table."
Annan also called on the UN Security Council to speak with "one voice" to end the violence.

Russian Mini Drones for Vietnam...[ 2795 ]

Russia to Build Mini Drone for Vietnam

MOSCOW, March 15 (RIA Novosti)
Russian warplane maker Irkut has signed a contract with Vietnam to build a small unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) for the Southeast Asian country, Izvestia daily reported on Thursday.
-
The $10 million deal, with Vietnam Aerospace Association (VASA), was signed on Wednesday, Yury Malov, head of the Irkut Engineering, Irkut's subsidiary, told Izvestia.
The firm will build a 100-kilogram mini-drone, as well as transmitting and remote control systems to operate it. It will also help "teach the Vietnamese side how to maintain and use the drones" until VASA "has had the experience" enabling it to build the UAVs itself, Malov said.
-
He said the UAVs are intended for civilian use but could "in future" be used for defense purposes.
VASA refused to confirm it had struck the deal.
Irkut has already built UAVs for Belarus.
Malov said Irkut may launch a "serial production" of UAVs for Vietnam should it like the Russian drone.
