The Hellenic Navy (HN) (Greek: Πολεμικό Ναυτικό, Polemikó Naftikó, abbreviated ΠΝ) is the naval force of Greece, part of the Greek Armed Forces. The modern Greek navy has its roots in the naval forces of various Aegean Islands, which fought in the Greek War of Independence. During the periods of monarchy (1833–1924 and 1936–1973) it was known as the Royal Navy (Βασιλικόν Ναυτικόν, Vasilikón Naftikón, abbreviated ΒΝ).The total displacement of all the navy's vessels is approximately 150,000 tons. The motto of the Hellenic Navy is "Μέγα το της Θαλάσσης Κράτος" from Thucydides' account of Pericles' oration on the eve of the Peloponnesian War. This has been roughly translated as "Great is the country that controls the sea". The Hellenic Navy's emblem consists of an anchor in front of a crossed Christian cross and trident, with the cross symbolizing Greek Orthodoxy, and the trident symbolizing Poseidon, the god of the sea in Greek mythology. Pericles' words are written across the top of the emblem. "The navy, as it represents a necessary weapon for Greece, should only be created for war and aim to victory."...............The Hellenic Merchant Marine refers to the Merchant Marine of Greece, engaged in commerce and transportation of goods and services universally. It consists of the merchant vessels owned by Greek civilians, flying either the Greek flag or a flag of convenience. Greece is a maritime nation by tradition, as shipping is arguably the oldest form of occupation of the Greeks and a key element of Greek economic activity since the ancient times. Nowadays, Greece has the largest merchant fleet in the world, which is the second largest contributor to the national economy after tourism and forms the backbone of world shipping. The Greek fleet flies a variety of flags, however some Greek shipowners gradually return to Greece following the changes to the legislative framework governing their operations and the improvement of infrastructure.Blogger Tips and Tricks

Asteroid Homing on Earth...[ 2744 ]

Tunguska-Sized Asteroid Homing on Earth

Tunguska-Sized Asteroid Homing on Earth
MOSCOW, February 26 (RIA Novosti)
An asteroid of the same class as one that allegedly detonated over Tunguska River in 1908 will pass by Earth next year, flying closer than some man-made satellites, according to NASA.
-
The asteroid, 2012 DA14, will miss the planet by 26,900 kilometers on February 15, 2013, which is closer than satellites in the geostationary orbit of 35,700 kilometers, according to data on NASA’s website published Sunday.
-
The asteroid, first detected by the Spanish Observatorio Astronomico de La Sagra, is between 40 and 95 meters in diameter and belongs to Apollo group of near-Earth asteroids, many of which are potential collision hazards.
Astronomer groups around the world are continuing monitoring 2012 DA14 to determine its size and trajectory.
-
The estimated size of 2012 DA14 places it in the same category as the celestial body that, scientists say, exploded over western Siberia in 1908.
 -
Though many theories exist concerning the event on Podkamennaya Tunsguska River, the leading explanation is a space body over 50 meters in size blew up in the atmosphere, the blast being at least 1,000 more powerful than the nuclear bomb that destroyed Hiroshima in 1945.

Latest attack on Nigerian church kills 4

February 26, 2012 -- Updated 1121 GMT (1921 HKT)

Jos, Nigeria (CNN) -- Fear and anxiety gripped churchgoers in Nigeria on Sunday after four people were killed in the latest church attack.
Police said a car packed with explosives rammed into the compound of the Cocin (Church of Christ) headquarters in Jos.
Some church members emerged from the scene covered in dust.
-
"It's pandemonium. There are a lot of people who are concerned -- some are on their way to church" and fear more attacks, said Mark Lipdo, program coordinator for the Stefanos Foundation, which aims to help persecuted Christians in Nigeria and elsewhere.
Lipdo -- who is also a member of the church -- said the car apparently went through a security checkpoint and toward a gate, which had been left open.
-
The driver struck and killed one woman before his car exploded, killing two churchgoers, Lipdo said. He said the driver's body was found in pieces.
The blast was so intense it could be heard for kilometers away. About 30 cars in the compound had their glass blown out, Lipdo said.
It was not immediately clear who was responsible for the attack.

Nigeria has suffered a rash of attacks on churches and mosques in the past year.
In December, Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan declared a state of emergency in several northern states following a series of Christmas Day attacks on churches.
The attacks in five cities killed 35 people last Christmas, including 32 people at a Catholic church in Madalla, a national secuirty adviser said. The militant Islamist group Boko Haram has claimed responsibility for that attack.
-
And in November, dozens of Boko Haram assailants descended on Damaturu, capital of the northern Nigerian state of Yobe, and killed more than 100 people in a coordinated series of bombings and gun attacks.
Many of those targeted were Christians, but police stations and mosques deemed "insufficiently Islamic" were also attacked.
-
Boko Haram translates from the local Hausa language as "Western education is outlawed." The group has morphed into an insurgency responsible for dozens of attacks in Nigeria in the past two years.
Boko Haram's targets include police outposts and churches, as well as places associated with "Western influence."
-
According to the Red Cross, rumors have swirled in recent months that Muslims in the largely Christian south may also become targets of attacks.
Red Cross official Dan Enowoghomwenma in southern Edo state said last month one mosque had been burned and another vandalized during clashes in Benin City.
-
About 3 million people belong to the Cocin church across Nigeria, and about 3,000 worshipers attend services at the headquarters in Jos -- including several hundred who had fled Yobe because of church violence there, Lipdo said.
He said Sunday's attack took place about 15 minutes into the first service of the day. Lipdo was planning to attend the second service.
-
"I am lucky to be alive," he said. But "it makes me feel tense, knowing this ... we don't know to which extent this will go until it is controlled."

CNN's Holly Yan reported from Atlanta and journalist Hassan John reported from Jos. CNN's Paul Cruickshank and Tim Lister also contributed to this report.

MOSCOW, February 26 (RIA Novosti)

The 6.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Russia’s East Siberia on Sunday caused no casualties or damage, the regional emergencies center reported.
“According to specified data, the epicenter was located 107 km (66 miles) east of the city of Kyzyl, at a depth of 15 km. The earthquake struck at 10:20 a.m. Moscow time (06:20 GMT) with a magnitude of 6 to 7 points in the epicenter,” the emergencies center said.
-
The earthquake, the second powerful tremor in East Siberia in the past two months, was felt in the Republic of Buryatia, the Irkutsk Region, the Republics of Tyva and Khakassia, the Krasnoyarsk Territory and the Kuzbass coal basin.
Local residents said the tremor caused their things to fall from upper shelves. Windows and glass rattled and chandeliers swayed during the earthquake.
-
“Dishes fell from my cupboards; the earthquake shocks were very strong and reminded me of the December earthquake by their magnitude,” a resident of Kyzyl said.
Late last year, a 6.7 magnitude earthquake struck the Kaa-Khemsky district of Tyva, some 100 km east of the city of Kyzyl, at a depth of 10 km. The tremor caused nor destruction or casualties.
-
The Emergencies Ministry has said the earthquake has not disrupted life-support facilities in the Republic of Tyva, which continued to operate as normal.
The earthquake shocks were also felt at the Sayano-Shushenskaya hydroelectric plant, Russia’s largest.

MOSCOW, February 25 (RIA Novosti)

Russia will fully pay off its debts to Kyrgyzstan for leasing military bases there within ten days, Kyrgyz President Almazbek Atambayev said on Saturday.
Russia owes $15 million, Atambayev said in a radio interview.
-
Both Russia and the United State have important military bases in the country. However, Washington has paid its lease "without any delays," Kyrgyz media said.
Russia has not paid "the measly rent" for its Kant air base for four years, Atambayev told Ekho Moskvy radio.
He also complained that Russia did not meet its obligations. "They should be training our pilots. Well, they're not," he said.
-
Atambayev said Russian President Dmitry Medvedev had been kept in the dark about the debt and that he instructed the Defense Ministry to pay it off during talks between the two leaders on Friday.
-
Atambayev also said the U.S. air base at Manas will not stay in Kyrgyzstan after its lease expires in 2014. The base is a key strategic staging post for the U.S. military in Afghanistan.
-
"Just look at the situation with the U.S. and Iran. Iran possesses missiles that can hit targets thousands of kilometers away," Atambayev said. "They may target Manas, but what if they miss?"
-
Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich hinted on Wednesday the United States may use the facility to launch a military strike against Iran.
The U.S. Ambassador in Moscow, Michael McFaul, later dismissed the idea.
