The Hellenic Navy (HN) (Greek: Πολεμικό Ναυτικό, Polemikó Naftikó, abbreviated ΠΝ) is the naval force of Greece, part of the Greek Armed Forces. The modern Greek navy has its roots in the naval forces of various Aegean Islands, which fought in the Greek War of Independence. During the periods of monarchy (1833–1924 and 1936–1973) it was known as the Royal Navy (Βασιλικόν Ναυτικόν, Vasilikón Naftikón, abbreviated ΒΝ).The total displacement of all the navy's vessels is approximately 150,000 tons. The motto of the Hellenic Navy is "Μέγα το της Θαλάσσης Κράτος" from Thucydides' account of Pericles' oration on the eve of the Peloponnesian War. This has been roughly translated as "Great is the country that controls the sea". The Hellenic Navy's emblem consists of an anchor in front of a crossed Christian cross and trident, with the cross symbolizing Greek Orthodoxy, and the trident symbolizing Poseidon, the god of the sea in Greek mythology. Pericles' words are written across the top of the emblem. "The navy, as it represents a necessary weapon for Greece, should only be created for war and aim to victory."...............The Hellenic Merchant Marine refers to the Merchant Marine of Greece, engaged in commerce and transportation of goods and services universally. It consists of the merchant vessels owned by Greek civilians, flying either the Greek flag or a flag of convenience. Greece is a maritime nation by tradition, as shipping is arguably the oldest form of occupation of the Greeks and a key element of Greek economic activity since the ancient times. Nowadays, Greece has the largest merchant fleet in the world, which is the second largest contributor to the national economy after tourism and forms the backbone of world shipping. The Greek fleet flies a variety of flags, however some Greek shipowners gradually return to Greece following the changes to the legislative framework governing their operations and the improvement of infrastructure.Blogger Tips and Tricks

Turkey Freezes Relations With France...[ 2575 ]

Turkey Freezes Relations With France Over Genocide Denial Bill

December 23, 2011, 3:40 AM EST

By Steve Bryant and Emre Peker

Dec. 23 (Bloomberg) -- Turkey froze political and military relations with France in retaliation for the approval by the French parliament’s lower chamber of a measure that makes it a crime to deny genocide against Armenians a century ago.
-

The government recalled its ambassador to Paris for consultations, canceled a joint meeting of economy and trade ministers in January and halted all programs for training and cultural affairs, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said yesterday in televised remarks in Ankara following the vote.
Turkey has been warning France for the past week that its fast-growing economy means it can hurt companies such as Airbus SAS and Electricite de France SA if the measure goes through. It was presented by a member from the party of President Nicolas Sarkozy, who is seeking re-election in April and trailing his socialist opponent in the polls.
-

The French legislation is “injust, inaccurate and Turkey condemns it vehemently,” Erdogan said. “People will not forgive those who distort history, or use history as a tool for political exploitation.”
The premier said Ottoman Turkey had not committed genocide against Armenians and his country is proud of its history. The measures are the first steps in a series of sanctions against France that will follow, depending on what course the French parliament and government take, he said.
-

Punishing Denial
The French parliament approved a law that would punish denial of any genocide recognized by French law with as long as a year in prison and a 45,000-euro ($59,000) fine. The motion was backed in a voice vote and now moves to the Senate, which hasn’t set a timetable to debate it.
Armenians say 1.5 million ethnic Armenians were killed from 1915 to 1923 in a deliberate campaign of genocide. About 20 countries including Greece, Canada and Russia, Turkey’s second- biggest trading partner behind Germany, recognize the events as genocide.
-

The Turkish government says mass killings of Armenians took place as part of clashes in which thousands of Turks and Armenians died after Armenian groups sided with the invading Russian army.
Little Progress
Turkey and its eastern neighbor Armenia have made little progress toward establishing relations as set out in protocols signed in 2009. Still, that agreement to set up joint commissions of historians to examine what took place showed that “Turkey has moved from complete negation toward a much greater awareness of what happened,” according to Hugh Pope, a project director in Turkey for the International Crisis Group.
-

“The French bill is counter-productive because the emotional reaction in Turkey can set back the cause for years,” Pope said by telephone. “That’s why France is so short-sighted to introduce this bill.”
After the French lower house approved similar legislation in 2006, Erdogan blocked Gaz de France SA’s participation in the 7.9 billion-euro Nabucco pipeline and suspended military relations. Turkey last year temporarily withdrew its ambassador from the U.S. after a House of Representatives committee approved a resolution recognizing the killings as genocide.
-

Electricite de France SA is lobbying to build a nuclear plant on Turkey’s northern Black Sea coast, Istanbul-based Aksam newspaper reported in August. Turkey has also held talks with Japanese and Korean companies.
Turkey’s economy grew an annual 8.2 percent in the third quarter, a pace only exceeded by China among the Group of 20 major economies.
-

French carmakers including Renault SA control a fifth of Turkey’s auto market and French banks including BNP Paribas SA have assets in the country exceeding $20 billion. French direct investment in Turkey between 2002 and 2010 was $4.8 billion, the Turkish embassy in Paris says.

MOSCOW, December 19 (RIA Novosti)
North Korean leader Kim Jong-il died at the age of 69, South Korea's Yonhap news agency said on Monday.
Kim "passed away from a great mental and physical strain," Yonhap quoted the North Korea's KCNA news agency as saying. He was pronounced dead on December 17, at 8:30 GMT.
KCNA later announced that the North Korean leader died of heart attack.
A female newscaster, clad in a black funeral dress, also announced Kim's death on South Korea's state TV.
His youngest son, Kim Jong-un, is tipped as possible successor. He was elected general secretary of the Worker's Party of Korea in late September 2010. Kim Jong-un will head the 232-member commission for his late father's funeral which is to take place on December 28. The nationwide mourning period will last until December 29.
North Koreans will be able to pay last tribute to their Supreme Leader in the Kumsusan Memorial Palace, where the embalmed body of his late father is being kept in a glass coffin. Foreign delegations were not allowed.
The North Korean leader suffered a stroke in 2008 and spent several months out of public view. Associated Press said Kim suffered from heart problems and diabetes.
South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) placed all military units on emergency alert following the news.
Kim Jong il inherited the leadership of the isolated country from his father Kim Il-sung in 1994. A personality cult has been built up around the family, with Kim Il-sung known as the "eternal president" and Kim Jong-il as the "dear leader."

At least 256 dead after storm pummels Philippines

December 17, 2011 -- Updated 1412 GMT (2212 HKT)

Manila, Philippines (CNN) -- At least 256 people are dead after Tropical Storm Washi pummeled the Philippines, the Red Cross said Saturday.
The vast majority of the bodies were found in the cities of Iligan and Cagayan de Oro, according to military officials and the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council. Five people were killed in a landslide, but all others died in flash flooding.
The provinces of Compostela Valley and Zamboanga del Norte were also hit, said Benito Ramos, chairman of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.

About 400 people are missing after the storm, which is called Sendong locally. More than 2,000 have been rescued, according to the Armed Forces of the Philippines.

Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin said officials are investigating reports that an entire village was swept away.
Flash flooding overnight -- following 10 hours of rain -- fueled the devastation, compounded by overflowing rivers and tributaries. As much as 20 centimeters (8 inches) of rain fell within 24 hours in some areas.
Ramos said despite government warning, some did not evacuate.

An estimated 100,000 people are displaced, according to the Department of Social Welfare and Development.
At least 20,000 people were staying in 10 evacuation centers in Cagayan de Oro, Social Welfare Secretary Dinky Soliman said Saturday.

Some 20,000 soldiers embarked on search-and-rescue operations, the military said.
Officials asked for volunteers to pack food to send to those displaced.
Though Washi was headed away from the Philippines on Saturday, trouble could loom for Vietnam, as the storm's westerly path could cross Ho Chi Minh City on Tuesday.

GORKI (Moscow region), December 17 (RIA Novosti)

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev in a Friday’s telephone conversation with his U.S. counterpart Barack Obama said that Washington’s comments over Russia’s allegedly rigged parliamentary polls were inadmissible, Russian president said on Saturday.

Speaking at the meeting with the members of the ruling United Russia party, Medvedev said that on Friday he told Obama that the U.S. officials’ assessment of Russian elections “does not have any significance for us.”

On December 6, two days after Russian parliamentary elections that sparked criticism across the country over the alleged mass ballot stuffing and vote fraud in favor of the united Russia party, the U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Russia’s polls were “neither free nor fair.”

When on the next or the second day [after the elections]… there are rebukes in the worst traditions of the Cold War, it is inadmissible. It is not a reset at all,” Medvedev said. “The Department of State is not a Russian office.”

Obama and Medvedev had a telephone conversation on Friday, Kremlin said. Obama congratulated the Russian leader on Russia’s admission to the World Trade Organization and voiced the United States’ intention to continue cooperation.

Medvedev reiterated on Saturday that Russia would act on the international political arena according to its interests, RIA Novosti reported.

We will not allow to be intimidated,” the president said.

Speaking about nationwide protest rallies, Medvedev told the United Russia members that the protests should be carried out within the law.

Any meetings, demonstrations are the signs of democracy and we realize it…It should happen in a strict compliance with the law,” the president said.
Protests over alleged mass electoral fraud at the December 4 parliamentary elections continued in Moscow on Saturday, as more than a thousand people attended a rally near the Kremlin.

It is the third authorized mass protest in Moscow. The next rally is scheduled for December 24 at the Sakarov Avenue. More than 25,000 people have signed up so far to a Facebook page announcing the rally.
