The Hellenic Navy (HN) (Greek: Πολεμικό Ναυτικό, Polemikó Naftikó, abbreviated ΠΝ) is the naval force of Greece, part of the Greek Armed Forces. The modern Greek navy has its roots in the naval forces of various Aegean Islands, which fought in the Greek War of Independence. During the periods of monarchy (1833–1924 and 1936–1973) it was known as the Royal Navy (Βασιλικόν Ναυτικόν, Vasilikón Naftikón, abbreviated ΒΝ).The total displacement of all the navy's vessels is approximately 150,000 tons. The motto of the Hellenic Navy is "Μέγα το της Θαλάσσης Κράτος" from Thucydides' account of Pericles' oration on the eve of the Peloponnesian War. This has been roughly translated as "Great is the country that controls the sea". The Hellenic Navy's emblem consists of an anchor in front of a crossed Christian cross and trident, with the cross symbolizing Greek Orthodoxy, and the trident symbolizing Poseidon, the god of the sea in Greek mythology. Pericles' words are written across the top of the emblem. "The navy, as it represents a necessary weapon for Greece, should only be created for war and aim to victory."...............The Hellenic Merchant Marine refers to the Merchant Marine of Greece, engaged in commerce and transportation of goods and services universally. It consists of the merchant vessels owned by Greek civilians, flying either the Greek flag or a flag of convenience. Greece is a maritime nation by tradition, as shipping is arguably the oldest form of occupation of the Greeks and a key element of Greek economic activity since the ancient times. Nowadays, Greece has the largest merchant fleet in the world, which is the second largest contributor to the national economy after tourism and forms the backbone of world shipping. The Greek fleet flies a variety of flags, however some Greek shipowners gradually return to Greece following the changes to the legislative framework governing their operations and the improvement of infrastructure.Blogger Tips and Tricks

8,000-foot-high dust cloud blankets Lubbock

LUBBOCK, Texas - Winds gusting at more than 70 mph churned up a dust storm that roiled through the Texas South Plains during the Monday afternoon commute.
Dust kicked up by westerly breezes ahead of a strong cold front restricted visibility in Lubbock to about 5 miles all afternoon, said National Weather Service Lubbock meteorologist Matt Ziebell.
-
That was nothing compared to the 8,000-foot-high rolling dust cloud that moved through the city just before 6 p.m., dropping visibility to between zero and less than a quarter of a mile, Ziebell said.
-
North winds gusting as high as 74 mph had begun forming the dust cloud about 100 miles north of Lubbock around 4:30 p.m., he said.
"It went from light to dark, just like that," said Lubbock convenience store clerk Alma Williams. "I've never seen anything like it. It really scared me."
She said customers who went outside to watch the dirt cloud said they hadn't seen anything like it, either,
-Lubbock city spokesman Jeff McKito said he was driving home from work when the dust hit. "It was pretty spectacular. Everything just turned black," he said.
He said cars pulled over and stopped, "but you don't want to get out of the car in this situation," he said.
FAA controllers at Lubbock International Airport had to evacuate the tower and direct air traffic from a backup center on the tower's ground floor, McKito said. Trees toppled, roofs lost shingles and a small cargo plane at the airport was overturned, he said.
No injuries were reported from the dust cloud reminiscent of those shown in Dust Bowl photos from the late 1930s.
The dust cloud was yet another byproduct of the persistent drought in West Texas, Ziebell said.
-
The U.S. Drought Monitor map released Oct. 11 showed much of Texas, including the South Plains, were still experiencing "exceptional drought" — the most severe category.
In an Oct. 6 statement, the National Weather Service in Lubbock reported that there was a "high likelihood" that 2011 could be the driest on record across the South Plains.

German tourist was eaten by cannibals..?...[ 2492 ]

Missing German Tourist Cannibal Claims Dismissed

Police have denied claims that a German tourist who disappeared on a remote tropical island was eaten by cannibals, Sky News reports.
-
Stefan Ramin, from Hamburg, went missing after arriving on Nuku Hiva in French Polynesia last month.
After a week of searches, charred human remains and clothes have been found near a campfire in a remote valley on the island.
-
The discovery led to reports that the 40-year-old may have been attacked and eaten by cannibals.
Testing in Paris will confirm whether the remains belong to Ramin but is expected to take several weeks.
Officers on the island are now searching for a local guide named Henri Haiti, who had taken Ramin on a goat hunting trip in the mountains.
-
He is believed to be the last person to see him alive.
-
After setting off on the hunt, Haiti returned to tell Ramin's girlfriend Heike Dorsch, 37, there had been an accident and that Ramin had been injured.
But when she tried to raise the alarm, Haiti allegedly attacked her and tied her to a tree, before fleeing the scene.
Dorsch was later able to free herself and alert the authorities.
-
Ramin and his girlfriend had set off on their yacht in 2008 before arriving at Nuku Hiva this September.
"The foreign ministry and the federal police are aware of the case and in contact with local authorities," said a German foreign ministry spokesman.

The Prime Minister has agreed to release all material, including key Cabinet minutes, following years of campaigning by relatives of the 96 Liverpool fans who died.
-
More than 100,000 people signed an online petition calling for full disclosure of the documents.
The families are particularly keen to learn about briefings that South Yorkshire Police gave to Margaret Thatcher a day after the 1989 tragedy.
-
The victims died in a crush at Sheffield Wednesday’s Hillsborough stadium, where Liverpool were playing Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup semi-final. Relatives of the dead believe Downing Street colluded with police to pin the blame for the disaster on Liverpool fans.
-
In a letter to Labour’s Andy Burnham, published in the Daily Mirror, Mr Cameron said: “Please let me reassure you that the Government is wholly committed to full disclosure of the Hillsborough information that it holds.
“There seems to me to be complete agreement on the need for full and public disclosure, initially to the families.”
-
Relatives will be shown the documents first before they are made available to all.
The news was welcomed by Margaret Aspinall, chairman of the Hillsborough Justice Campaign. She said: “It’s important that we get these Cabinet minutes. You can’t have the whole truth of Hillsborough without them and we’ve been shouting to have them released for 22 years.
-
“We hope all documents will be released with no censorship.”
Full disclosure of the documents will be debated by MPs in the Commons today.
