The Hellenic Navy (HN) (Greek: Πολεμικό Ναυτικό, Polemikó Naftikó, abbreviated ΠΝ) is the naval force of Greece, part of the Greek Armed Forces. The modern Greek navy has its roots in the naval forces of various Aegean Islands, which fought in the Greek War of Independence. During the periods of monarchy (1833–1924 and 1936–1973) it was known as the Royal Navy (Βασιλικόν Ναυτικόν, Vasilikón Naftikón, abbreviated ΒΝ).The total displacement of all the navy's vessels is approximately 150,000 tons. The motto of the Hellenic Navy is "Μέγα το της Θαλάσσης Κράτος" from Thucydides' account of Pericles' oration on the eve of the Peloponnesian War. This has been roughly translated as "Great is the country that controls the sea". The Hellenic Navy's emblem consists of an anchor in front of a crossed Christian cross and trident, with the cross symbolizing Greek Orthodoxy, and the trident symbolizing Poseidon, the god of the sea in Greek mythology. Pericles' words are written across the top of the emblem. "The navy, as it represents a necessary weapon for Greece, should only be created for war and aim to victory."...............The Hellenic Merchant Marine refers to the Merchant Marine of Greece, engaged in commerce and transportation of goods and services universally. It consists of the merchant vessels owned by Greek civilians, flying either the Greek flag or a flag of convenience. Greece is a maritime nation by tradition, as shipping is arguably the oldest form of occupation of the Greeks and a key element of Greek economic activity since the ancient times. Nowadays, Greece has the largest merchant fleet in the world, which is the second largest contributor to the national economy after tourism and forms the backbone of world shipping. The Greek fleet flies a variety of flags, however some Greek shipowners gradually return to Greece following the changes to the legislative framework governing their operations and the improvement of infrastructure.Blogger Tips and Tricks

Police and protesters give differing accounts of what happened yesterday on the Brooklyn Bridge.
The New York City police department say that they began arresting people because they had spilled from the pedestrian section of the bridge onto the roadway and were blocking traffic.
Protesters claim they were led onto the road by police and essentially trapped so they could be arrested.
-
Video footage shows a chaotic confusing scene with some protesters sitting down on the bridge and refusing to move as police make arrests.
-
The majority of those arrested were given on the spot penalties for disorderly conduct and allowed to leave according to police.
The Occupy Wall Street protesters have been camped out near Wall Street for two weeks protesting issues including the 2008 bank bailouts, foreclosures and high unemployment.
-
Last week police arrested 80 people during a march to the Union Square shopping district.
In one confrontation four women were sprayed with pepper spray by a police commander and the incident was caught on video.
The footage spread quickly across the internet and many websites named the officer involved and called on the mayor to take action.

Dutch city's "cannabis" coffee shops...[ 2468 ]

Dutch city's coffee shops close doors to most cannabis tourists

(CNN) -- Coffee shops in the Dutch city of Maastricht have banned foreign tourists, except those from Germany and Belgium, from entering their premises from Saturday, according to the local association of coffee shops.
-
Coffee shops in the Netherlands are places where customers can legally buy and consume cannabis.
"We have put in place a 'neighbouring country' criteria," Marc Josemans, president of the Society of United Coffeeshops and owner of the Easy Going coffee shop, told CNN.
"This is a form of self-regulation. It is not a law, there will be no judge, this was just the only choice we had."
The move comes after Maastricht's city council decided that something had to be done about the 2.2 million visitors that come to the city every year, according to Josemans.
-

"The visitors put a lot of pressure on the city when they come here and make it very busy on our narrow streets. So the city said that something had to be done about the traffic and nuisance," he said.
"But the biggest nuisance isn't the number of coffee shops or the clients, but the illegal drug runners that can be quite aggressive and start fights and rob the tourists."
All visitors to Maastricht's coffee shops -- some 6,000 a day, almost three-quarters of whom are foreign, according to Josemans -- already have to show their passports and their information is then kept for 48 hours.
-

Now only those with a Dutch, German or Belgian passport will be allowed in.
"A number of people will leave disappointed, and we are not very proud of refusing entry to visitors who have come to our shops for the last 28 years and never caused a problem," said Josemans, who has himself used cannabis for 35 years.
"The question now will be if they instead buy from the illegal drug runners here or if they buy illegally in their own countries."
-

Nobody from Maastricht city council was available for comment Saturday.
A spokeswoman for Maastricht police told CNN that the police were not a party to the ban and that it is not illegal for foreign tourists to enter the city's coffee shops.
The spokeswoman, who is not named in line with department policy, said police would not carry out any identity checks to enforce the ban. "We will just go about our normal business and carry out our duties where needed," she said.
At spokeswoman at the tourist office for Maastricht, which lies near the Belgian border, said it was not aware of the new rules.
The Society of United Coffeeshops decided on the ban in July but it only came into effect October 1.
The organization is also working on a plan to move seven of the city's 14 coffee shops to the outskirts, where foreign tourists can then go and buy hash and marijuana, Josemans said.
"But the first relocation won't happen until June 2013, so we had to put this ban in place now, and we could then change it again once we've completed the relocation.
"At these new sites, the parking (areas) will have direct access to the coffee shops, so the drug runners can't approach the clients as they walk to the coffee shop."
-

Josemans also says the Dutch government wants the coffee shops to operate on a smaller scale and is planning to impose a nationwide ban on anyone who doesn't hold a Dutch passport buying cannabis.
"They want to put this 'weed pass' in place from January 1 next year, but we are strongly against this."
A press release on the Dutch Ministry of Security and Justice website from May this year says coffee shops will become private clubs where only adult Dutch citizens can become members.
-

"The Cabinet expects that closure of coffee shops to foreign drugs tourists will ensure that they no longer travel to the Netherlands to purchase and consume cannabis. After all, many of them can use the illegal markets available in their immediate surroundings," the press release says.
The statement does not give a date for the implementation of the new measures.
-

CNN's calls to the Dutch justice ministry were not immediately returned.
But Josemans says cannabis supply is not only a Dutch problem.
"This is also the responsibility of the other European governments; nobody is taking responsibility for those millions of customers who want to buy cannabis for their own use," he said.
"It is time to get their heads out of the sand to get a decent drugs policy in place to address this problem

Australia: Plane hits Ferris wheel...[ 2467 ]

Plane hits Ferris wheel north of Sydney, trapping four

No-one was seriously injured in the incident, officials say

BBC ., Saturday, 01 Sept. 2011
-
An ultra-light plane has crashed into a Ferris wheel in a village north of Sydney, trapping four people, Australian officials say.
The Cheetah S200 plane with two men aboard did not topple the wheel after hitting it during a festival in the village of Old Bar.
-
The men and two children at the top of the wheel were trapped for some time before being rescued by a crane.
There were no serious injuries in Saturday's incident, the officials say.

'Get the damn kids out'
"Thankfully, everyone was taken down and were able to walk away from it," New South Wales Rural Fire Service spokesman Ben Shepherd said after the incident in Old Bar, some 220 miles (350km) north of Sydney.
-
Police said the two children remained trapped on the wheel for about 90 minutes.
The two men spent almost three hours in the plane's wreckage, some 10m (30ft) above the ground.
The aircraft was leaking fuel, and rescue teams had to spray foam to reduce the risk of it exploding.
One of the men in the plane, who local media named as John, said he and the pilot had urged the rescuers to free the children first.
-
"Don't worry about us. Just get the damn kids out," he said.
The aircraft reportedly failed to gain enough altitude after taking off from a nearby airport.
An investigation into the crash is now under way.

The National Express East Anglia train ground to a halt under the baking midday sun outside Ipswich, in Suffolk, after coolant levels dropped causing the engine to cut out.
Bemused passengers sitting in the stuffy carriages heard a desperate plea over the tannoy from the driver for bottled water as temperatures soared over 21 degrees (70f).
-
One passenger reported the message as: ''Has anyone got any bottles of water we can use to get the train going again?''
The water was collected and fed into the coolant before the train restarted to finish the journey at around 12.30pm on Tuesday.
-
Peter Meades of National Express East Anglia praised the train crew and passengers for saving the journey.
He said: ''We're very grateful to passengers on the train who willingly came forward to assist the train crew in offering bottles of water which enabled the driver to restore the coolant levels, following a fault that occurred with the engine of the train.''
-
When the train returned to Ipswich there was found to be a leak in a pipe which was fixed by a technician to return the train to normal service.
The balmy conditions are set to continue into the weekend, which is likely to see many sun-seekers heading to parks, rivers and coastal areas.

However, Plymouth City Council has announced that its gritting lorries will be on standby for snow from this Saturday.
But Plymouth said that because of damage caused by the last two harsh winters, its seven gritters will be on standby for the next six months to keep the city's main roads open.
It is also planning a public road show on Saturday, giving people advice about which roads will be gritted and "information about how to travel safely when there is ice or snow on the roads".

MOSCOW, September 30 (RIA Novosti)

The RSM-54 Sineva submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM)

Russia carried out on Thursday a successful test of a new sea-based intercontinental ballistic missile, the Defense Ministry said.

The Liner missile was launched from the Tula (Delta IV class) strategic submarine in the Barents Sea targeting the Kura test grounds on the Kamchatka peninsula.

"The missile's warheads hit the designated area on schedule," spokesman Col. Igor Konashenkov said.

The Liner is an advanced version of the solid-propellant Sineva submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) which is currently in service with the Russian Navy. It has a longer range and enhanced missile defense penetration capability.

According to the developer of the missile, the State Missile Center, the Liner can carry up to four medium-yield warheads or up to 12 small-yield warheads, or their mixture.

In comparison, Russia's much-coveted Bulava SLBM can carry only six small-yield warheads.
