The Hellenic Navy (HN) (Greek: Πολεμικό Ναυτικό, Polemikó Naftikó, abbreviated ΠΝ) is the naval force of Greece, part of the Greek Armed Forces. The modern Greek navy has its roots in the naval forces of various Aegean Islands, which fought in the Greek War of Independence. During the periods of monarchy (1833–1924 and 1936–1973) it was known as the Royal Navy (Βασιλικόν Ναυτικόν, Vasilikón Naftikón, abbreviated ΒΝ).The total displacement of all the navy's vessels is approximately 150,000 tons. The motto of the Hellenic Navy is "Μέγα το της Θαλάσσης Κράτος" from Thucydides' account of Pericles' oration on the eve of the Peloponnesian War. This has been roughly translated as "Great is the country that controls the sea". The Hellenic Navy's emblem consists of an anchor in front of a crossed Christian cross and trident, with the cross symbolizing Greek Orthodoxy, and the trident symbolizing Poseidon, the god of the sea in Greek mythology. Pericles' words are written across the top of the emblem. "The navy, as it represents a necessary weapon for Greece, should only be created for war and aim to victory."...............The Hellenic Merchant Marine refers to the Merchant Marine of Greece, engaged in commerce and transportation of goods and services universally. It consists of the merchant vessels owned by Greek civilians, flying either the Greek flag or a flag of convenience. Greece is a maritime nation by tradition, as shipping is arguably the oldest form of occupation of the Greeks and a key element of Greek economic activity since the ancient times. Nowadays, Greece has the largest merchant fleet in the world, which is the second largest contributor to the national economy after tourism and forms the backbone of world shipping. The Greek fleet flies a variety of flags, however some Greek shipowners gradually return to Greece following the changes to the legislative framework governing their operations and the improvement of infrastructure.Blogger Tips and Tricks

Rare tornado rips through east Russia, kills one

ABC., August 1, 2011 - 06:00 AM
-
A small but feisty tornado zipped through the eastern Russia city of Blagoveshchensk on Sunday, reportedly killing one person and harming 28 others. Blagoveshchensk, which means "good news" according to Lonely Planet, is the administrative headquarters of a Russian region that runs along the Amur River bordering China.

Russia Today reported that the twister peeled the roofs from houses, turned over vehicles and uprooted trees. It is almost see-through in the below video, but nonetheless shows off a significant power when it flings debris like a petulant child and stomps on electrical lines.
The vast majority of Russia is not used to tornadoes, as you can see in this graphic from NOAA. Says

Irish Weather Online:
Significant tornadoes in Europe are rare, but there have been several disasters involving tornadoes in Russia in modern history. In June 1904, at least 30 people were killed when two tornadoes moved through Moscow, while three powerful tornadoes in June 1984 killed more than 400 people in Belyanitsky, Ivanovo and Balino in western Russia.

Breivik demands rulling Labour Goverment resign, exchange for cooperation

Sunday, 31 July, 2011

 -
Anders Behring Breivik, who has admitted carrying out the terrorist attacks in Norway last week, has demanded that the ruling Labour government resign in exchange for his cooperation on providing information, a media report said on Sunday.

Broadcaster NRK said its information came from police sources.

In a separate report, the Aftenposten newspaper said Breivik had been delayed in traffic on July 22, forcing him to detonate his bomb in Oslo's government quarter only after most offices had closed for the weekend.

Breivik has admitted responsibility for the Friday afternoon bombing, in which eight people died, and the subsequent shooting on nearby Utoya island, in which 69 ruling Labour government's youth wings members and officers were killed.

He is currently undergoing psychiatric evaluation.

Earlier reports said Breivik had previously planned bombs targeting the royal palace in Oslo and the headquarters of the ruling Labour Party. Most of those who died on Utoya were members of the party's youth wing attending a summer camp.

Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg's Labour Party receives the support of 41.7 per cent of the electorate in the Synovate poll for July, up 11 percentage points from last month's poll.

We see this as yet another expression of the Norwegian people's sympathy with the victims of the terror bombing in Oslo and the massacre at the Utøya Labour Party youth camp, says Deputy Party Secretary Odd Erik Stende.

The poll was made for Dagbladet just a few days after the terrorist acts, and with a limited number of people questioned, NRK reports. (photo NRK)

Turkey's Gul says no crisis as top generals quit

ISTANBUL | Sat Jul 30, 2011 9:01am EDT
(Reuters) - President Abdullah Gul denied on Saturday that Turkey faced a crisis after the resignation of the country's four most senior military commanders, but acknowledged this had created an "extraordinary" situation.
The departure of the generals has caused turmoil in the military, giving Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan an opportunity to extend his authority over the once-dominant armed forces, the second biggest in NATO.
-

Chief of General Staff General Isik Kosaner stepped down on Friday evening along with the army, navy and air force commanders in protest over the detention of 250 officers on charges of conspiring against Erdogan's government.
-

In a farewell message to "brothers in arms," Kosaner said it was impossible to continue in his job as he could not defend the rights of men who had been detained as a consequence of a flawed judicial process.
Relations between the secularist military and Erdogan's socially conservative Justice and Development Party (AK) have been fraught since it first won power in 2002, due to mistrust of the AK's Islamist roots.

Turkey's military chiefs quit...[ 2363 ]

Turkey's military chiefs quit ahead of key meeting

ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkey said on Friday its top four military chiefs were all seeking retirement, in moves that appeared to reflect a deep rift between the secularist military and a government with roots in political Islam.
State-run Anatolian news agency said the head of the armed forces General Isik Kosaner and the commanders of the ground, naval and air forces were all stepping down, in what some Turkish media initially described as resignations.
The reason for the generals' move was not immediately clear, but tensions between the military and the government of Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan have run high in recent years.
The Supreme Military Council is due to hold a major twice-yearly meeting next week dealing with key appointments and President Abdullah Gul and Erdogan met Kosaner on Friday to discuss the matter.
Following the announcement Erdogan met the head of Turkey's gendarmerie paramilitary force, General Necdet Ozel, and they subsequently went separately to the presidential palace to meet President Abdullah Gul, fuelling speculation Ozel may be appointed to replace Kosaner.
By tradition, the head of the ground forces replaces the armed forces chief when he retires.
Friction between the government and military, traditionally guardians of the secular state, has been fueled by the continuing trial of 200 military officers accused of plotting to overthrow the government.
The "Sledgehammer" case, arising from an alleged coup plan presented at an army seminar in 2003, is one of several setting Turkey's secularist establishment against Erdogan's ruling AK party. Critics say AK has a secret Islamist agenda, an allegation it denies.
Some 165 military personnel, including more than 40 generals, are in custody in the coup plot trials, severely damaging the military's operational ability.
Anatolian initially reported Kosaner as resigning "as he saw it as necessary," but subsequently withdrew the story, saying instead that he had sought retirement.
The Turkish lira weakened sharply on the news to 1.6964 against the dollar from an interbank close of 1.6805 on Friday.
-
MILITARY PROMOTIONS
The Supreme Military Council (YAS) meeting, set to start on Monday, could now be postponed. A row over appointments emerged ahead of last year's YAS, but was resolved by delaying some appointments and the retirement of some senior officers.
A prosecutor investigating another alleged plot involving military officers on Friday sought the arrest of 22 people including the commander of the Aegean army, media reports said. It was not clear if the generals' move was linked to this.
There was uncertainty in financial markets about what the decision by the generals meant, amid reports that their retirement was looming anyway, but Royal Bank of Scotland economist Timothy Ash said it appeared to be a "symbolic step."
He linked it to the coup plot trials, including those targeting "Ergenekon," an alleged secret network involved in anti-government conspiracies.
"It seems to relate to issue of military promotions stalled by legal action around Ergenekon," Ash said.
"Hard to see the military winning this battle, given the ruling AK Party got 50 per cent poll support in the June elections, and now dominates institutions of state," he added.
The Turkish armed forces carried out three coups between 1960 and 1980 and pressured the country's first Islamist-led government out of power in 1997.
Such intervention is no longer regarded as feasible, as the power of the military has been curbed sharply under reforms carried out by Erdogan's government with the aim of winning European Union membership.
Kosaner, who took over as head of the armed forces in August 2010, is regarded as a hardline secularist, but he has kept a lower profile than previous chiefs of the general staff.
Alongside Kosaner, the land forces head Erdal Ceylanoglu, air forces chief Hasan Aksay and navy commander Ugur Yigit have also sought retirement, the reports said.
The announcement comes amid an upsurge in violence in southeast Turkey in the military's battle against separatist Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) guerrillas.

It was China's best women's result in the world championships, never finishing better than 11th in three previous world titles in which they had competed.
"It's a pity that the team failed at the last moment, I think it's a great chance to win the gold at worlds," said China team leader Liu Qinlong.
"The coach is very strict with the players and it's not easy to win the silver. We will get prepared for the London Games. Winning the gold medal in the Olympics is always our dream," he added.
"At this moment, I am not happy," said China's Spanish coach Jane Giralt Juan. "But a silver medal is good."
