The Hellenic Navy (HN) (Greek: Πολεμικό Ναυτικό, Polemikó Naftikó, abbreviated ΠΝ) is the naval force of Greece, part of the Greek Armed Forces. The modern Greek navy has its roots in the naval forces of various Aegean Islands, which fought in the Greek War of Independence. During the periods of monarchy (1833–1924 and 1936–1973) it was known as the Royal Navy (Βασιλικόν Ναυτικόν, Vasilikón Naftikón, abbreviated ΒΝ).The total displacement of all the navy's vessels is approximately 150,000 tons. The motto of the Hellenic Navy is "Μέγα το της Θαλάσσης Κράτος" from Thucydides' account of Pericles' oration on the eve of the Peloponnesian War. This has been roughly translated as "Great is the country that controls the sea". The Hellenic Navy's emblem consists of an anchor in front of a crossed Christian cross and trident, with the cross symbolizing Greek Orthodoxy, and the trident symbolizing Poseidon, the god of the sea in Greek mythology. Pericles' words are written across the top of the emblem. "The navy, as it represents a necessary weapon for Greece, should only be created for war and aim to victory."...............The Hellenic Merchant Marine refers to the Merchant Marine of Greece, engaged in commerce and transportation of goods and services universally. It consists of the merchant vessels owned by Greek civilians, flying either the Greek flag or a flag of convenience. Greece is a maritime nation by tradition, as shipping is arguably the oldest form of occupation of the Greeks and a key element of Greek economic activity since the ancient times. Nowadays, Greece has the largest merchant fleet in the world, which is the second largest contributor to the national economy after tourism and forms the backbone of world shipping. The Greek fleet flies a variety of flags, however some Greek shipowners gradually return to Greece following the changes to the legislative framework governing their operations and the improvement of infrastructure.Blogger Tips and Tricks

Internet : Today lunched the Cyrillic script domains...[ 1245 ]

Cyrillic Domain Names Become Operational On The Internet

It was a big day for Russian Internet users.

The first Internet domains using the Cyrillic script were launched on May 13 after Russia was officially assigned the .рф (.rf, for "Russian Federation") domain by the global Internet governing body.

Representatives of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) handed Russia its Cyrillic domain administration certificate at an Internet forum that kicked off in Moscow.

The arrival of Cyrillic on the Internet, where Latin characters have long held a monopoly, follows a similar switch last week, when websites in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates began using Arabic script in their web addresses.

ICANN chief executive Rod Beckstrom said the new native-script domains will help make the World Wide Web even more global.

"It's a very big move. The Internet's been around roughly for four decades, and this is the first time that domain names are opening up to people's native tongues and scripts," Beckstrom says. "So for the many people in the world that speak Cyrillic, or Arabic-based languages or Chinese-based languages, this is very significant, and Russia is a very important part of ICANN, which is a global organization. So we are very excited to see this happening."

Igor Shchyogolev, Russia's minister of communications and mass media, was among the top officials who came to the forum to hail what many have already described as a "birth certificate" for Cyrillic Internet domains.

Shchyogolev told the forum that the changes mark the end of the Latin script's domination of the Internet -- although certain challenges remain.

"The wonderful little character @, which is used to write all Internet addresses, does not exist on the Russian keyboard," Shchyogolev notes. "To type this character, users have to switch their keyboard from Cyrillic to Latin. This is a detail, but it shows that we have so far been oriented toward the Latin script."

Paving The Way

ICANN approved the use of non-Latin characters in Internet domain names last autumn. According to ICANN, more than half of the world's 1.6 billion Internet users speak a native language that is not written with the Latin alphabet.

In Russia, only two Cyrillic addresses were launched today: президент.рф and правительство.рф, the web sites of the country's president and government.

Gradually, more and more web address holders will be able to "Russify" their domains (including the site of RFE/RL's Russian Service).

Following private companies, media outlets, and political parties, ordinary users will be able to register for domains in Cyrillic starting October 1.

President Dmitry Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, both self-professed Internet buffs, have actively lobbied for the introduction of Cyrillic domains in Russia.

Supporters say the changes will make the Internet more accessible to Russians who feel intimidated by the Latin script. The Cyrillic web addresses, they say, will also help boost web use in the provinces, which still lag far behind big cities in terms of Internet penetration.

More than 30 million Russians are regular Internet users, out of a total population of some 140 million, and the country has the fastest-growing Internet community in Europe.

'Massive Audience'
Aleksandr Amzin, an Internet expert at the online news agency Lenta.ru, predicts that Cyrillic domains will prove a success.

"The Russian Internet represents a massive audience, an audience that does not necessarily know English or the Latin alphabet, and for whom it is much simpler to write in Russian than in English," he tells RFE/RL. "For businesses, it's not a bad thing either."

But some web users talk of Internet "separatism" and are worried that the changes will create a segregated, hermetic Russian web and undermine the Internet's global spirit.

Critics fear that the new domains could encourage Russian authorities to follow China's example and introduce Internet censorship.

Another concern is the likely rise in cyberfraud. Some companies say they will be forced to acquire a .рф sister domain in order to prevent so-called cybersquatters from taking over the Cyrillic domains and harming their business.

"For cybersquatters, this is heaven," Amzin says.
"Russia already had two domain types -- .ru and .su, which stands for Soviet Union.
Now we have three.
Those who want to protect themselves from fraudsters will now have to register at .ru, .su, and .рф."

Runaway Star
A heavy runaway star is rushing away from a nearby stellar nursery at more than 250,000 miles an hour, a speed at which one could travel to the our moon and back in two hours.

This is the most extreme case of a very massive star that has been kicked out of its home by a group of even heftier siblings. The homeless star is on the outskirts of the 30 Doradus Nebula, a raucous stellar breeding ground in the nearby Large Magellanic Cloud. The stellar nusery is seen at the center of this image.

The finding bolsters evidence that the most massive stars in the local universe reside in 30 Doradus, making it a unique laboratory for studying heavyweight stars.

Also called the Tarantula Nebula, 30 Doradus is roughly 170,000 light-years from Earth. Tantalizing clues from three observatories, including the Hubble Space Telescope's newly installed Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS), and some old- fashioned detective work, suggest that the star may have traveled about 375 light-years from its suspected home, a giant star cluster called R136.

Nestled in the core of 30 Doradus, R136 contains several stars topping 100 solar masses each. Visit Hubble Catches Heavyweight Runaway Star for more information.

Moscow awaits Sofia moves on pipelines

Published: May 13, 2010 at 10:23 AM
ISTANBUL, Turkey, May 13 (UPI) -- Two oil pipelines meant to bypass congested Turkish waters   can merge once the Bulgarian government decides to act, the   Russian energy minister said.

Bulgaria in 2007 signed an agreement with Russia and Greece to build the 174-mile Burgas-Alexandroupolis oil pipeline to bypass crowded waterways near Turkey by crossing an overland route to the Aegean Sea

Russia's state-owned pipeline operator Transneft said late payments from Sofia are having a negative impact on project development.

Meanwhile, Moscow is lobbying for progress on the Samsun-Ceyhan oil pipeline through Turkey, saying it would reduce the environmental impact of tanker traffic in the Black Sea.

Russian Energy Minister Sergei Shmatko said both projects could merge if Bulgaria acted appropriately, Russian news agency ITAR-Tass reports.

"As soon as the Bulgarian government shows readiness to implement the project and takes practical steps towards further implementation of the project, we on our part will suggest discussing a consolidation of these projects," he said.

Burgas-Alexandroupolis oil pipeline is to be completed near the end of 2011.

Samsun-Ceyhan is scheduled for completion in 2012.
Shmatko was speaking during a state visit to Turkey.

British Airways plans to run half its flights[ 1242 ]

BA planning to run half of flights

The Lonon Evening Standard.,, 13.05.10
British Airways plans to run at least half its flights from Heathrow Airport during the first wave of strikes by cabin crew next week under newly-announced contingency plans.
The airline said it intends to operate more than 60% of long-haul and over 50% of short-haul services from the airport during the five-day walkout from Tuesday.

Unite is planning four strikes of five days each, with just one day between, disrupting services for more than 20 days, in a long-running dispute over jobs, pay and working conditions.

BA said it plans to fly more than 60,000 customers each day of the strikes next week, adding that Gatwick and London City airports will not be affected by the industrial action. Most of its revised short-haul schedule at Heathrow will be operated by BA's own aircraft and cabin crew, supplemented by leasing up to eight aircraft with pilots and cabin crews from five different airlines from the UK and Europe.

British Airways has also made arrangements with more than 50 other carriers so that it can rebook customers during the strike period on to their flights, if they had been due to travel on a BA service which has been cancelled. The airline said it is still available to hold further talks with Unite but wants customers to have early warning of its flying schedule to allow sufficient time for alternative travel arrangements to be made.

Customers flying to or from Heathrow on a long-haul flight between May 18 and May 23 can check their bookings on www.ba.com to see if their flight is still operating. The revised short-haul Heathrow schedule between May 18 and May 23 will be available for customers from Friday.
Willie Walsh, BA's chief executive, said: "Unite's leaders have deliberately targeted the busy half-term holidays to cause as much disruption as possible for hard-working families looking to spend some well-earned time away.

"We are confident that many crew will ignore Unite's pointless strike call and support the efforts of the airline to keep our customers flying. As the new Government starts addressing the enormous economic challenges facing the country, it is sad that Unite's priority is to seek to damage Britain's links with the world."

Mr Walsh said BA had made a "very fair" offer to the union to resolve a 15-month dispute, maintaining that the airline had compromised "many times" in a bid to get a deal.
He added: "Our cabin crews are voting with their feet. Due to the numbers of cabin crew who are telling us they want to work normally since Unite's latest strike call, the schedule will be slightly larger than we had originally anticipated.

We will fly tens of thousands of customers around the world on business trips and family holidays every day that a strike takes place. Many thousands more can be rebooked on to alternative BA flights or on to rival airlines. We remain absolutely determined to resolve the dispute and our door remains open to Unite, day or night. It is not too late for Unite to call off this action and protect its members' job security."

The Moscow metro bombings left 40 dead and dozens injured
BBC., Thursday, 13 May 2010 13:48 UK
Three alleged organisers of the March suicide bombings on the Moscow metro have been killed after resisting arrest, Russian officials say.

It was not immediately clear when or where the killings happened. All those involved in the bombings have now been identified, officials said.
Russian leaders previously warned that the masterminds of the attacks, which killed 40 people, would be "destroyed".
Two young women from Dagestan were identified as carrying out the attacks.
The 29 March bombings targeted two of the Moscow metro's commuter trains.

The three alleged planners died during "an attempt to detain three members of an illegal group", said the head of the Federal Security Service (FSB), Alexander Bortnikov.
"To our great regret, we were unable to detain them alive because they put up fierce armed resistance and were killed."

'Matter of honour'

Mr Bortnikov said the suspects included a man who had escorted the suicide bombers to Moscow and another who had accompanied one bomber to the station.
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said there had been no option but to kill the "terrorists".

"Those who put up resistance have to be eliminated - you cannot show pity," the Russian leader was reported as saying at a meeting with Mr Bortnikov.
The FSB head said that efforts to find other identified planners of the attacks were continuing.
The suicide bombers were identified as a 17-year-old thought to be the widow of a Caucasus militants, and the 28-year-old wife of an Islamist rebel commander.

A Chechen militant leader, Doku Umarov, said he ordered the bombings.
Shortly after the attacks, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said that Russian investigators should view catching the organisers of the bombings as a "matter of honour".
He said the security services, who had been widely criticised in the media, should drag them "from the bottom of the sewers".
