King speaks out as Thai crisis continues

Thailand's king has appeared on television for the first time since anti-government Red Shirt protesters took over central Bangkok.

King Bhumibol appeared to address a group of newly appointed judges.

He did not speak of the crisis affecting Thailand directly. Instead, he told the new members of the judiciary to do their job with honesty.

"In this country there may be some people who forget their duty," he said.

"You should be an example by working honestly and properly."

King Bhumibol says that will help the country remain orderly.

Thailand's opposition has been trying to get an audience with the king, who is seen as a unifying force.

Thailand's pro-monarchist Yellow Shirts have threatened to move against the Red Shirts to protect the country if the government does not stop the protests.

The Yellow Shirts are a pro-establishment group that shut down Bangkok's airports in 2008 before a court verdict removed the government and the current administration was installed.

They are fiercely opposed to exiled prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra and his poor rural allies, the Red Shirts.

There is now concern that if the Yellow Shirts move onto the streets the two groups will end up fighting each other.

A previous one-week deadline set by the Yellow Shirts for the end of the protest has already expired.

The Red Shirts have vowed to conduct a nationwide campaign to stop police and soldiers from moving to Bangkok to bolster armed forces in the capital.

The Reds have already stopped a number of convoys of police from moving to Bangkok from other parts of Thailand.

They have blocked roads and slashed tyres to prevent them from reinforcing security forces in the city.

In at least one incident, police scuffled with protesters when they moved against them, armed with batons and riot shields.

Police and military have made several arrests and warned that blocking roads will not be tolerated.

NOMI, Ishikawa -(Mainichi Japan) April 26, 2010-

A Japanese crested ibis chick hatched at a zoological park here on Sunday.

The Japanese crested ibis, designated a special Japanese natural treasure, hatched at Ishikawa Zoo in Nomi, Ishikawa Prefecture, at 7:31 a.m. on Sunday.

The egg was laid by a 6-year old female ibis that mated with an 8-year-old male at the Sado Japanese Crested Ibis Conservation Center in Sado, Niigata Prefecture. It was the first egg to incubate among all four eggs laid together between March 27 and April 2.

It is only the second time that an egg moved from Sado to another facility to avoid mass bird flu infections and other risks has hatched successfully, following a hatching at Tokyo's Tama Zoological Park.

The city's natural conservation division said it still remains unknown whether the chick, which is about 12 centimeters in length and weighs 62.9 grams, is male or female. It will be able to leave the nest in one and a half months, if all goes well.

The chick started pecking the eggshell from the inside on the evening of April 23; however, as it did not have enough strength to break the shell on its own, a breeding staff member helped the process using tweezers.

«Πόλεμο» βλέπει πίσω από την εκλογή Σάντος ο Τσάβες

Κολομβία — Ο πρόεδρος της Βενεζουέλας Ούγο Τσάβες, του οποίου οι σχέσεις με τη γειτονική Κολομβία μόνον αγαστές δεν μπορούν να χαρακτηρισθούν, προειδοποίησε την Δευτέρα πως η πιθανή εκλογή του Χουάν Μανουέλ Σάντος στην προεδρία της όμορου χώρας «ενδέχεται να προκαλέσει πόλεμο» στην περιοχή.

Ο Σάντος, δελφίνος του νυν προέδρου Άλβαρο Ουρίμπε, θεωρείται από τις σφυγμομετρήσεις (που του πιστώνουν το 35%) ως επικρατέστερος για την εκλογή στην αναμέτρηση για την προεδρία, στις 30 Μαΐου. Υπενθυμίζεται ότι την 1η Μαρτίου 2008, ως υπουργός Αμύνης, ο Σάντος είχε διατάξει την επίθεση του στρατού εντός του εδάφους του γειτονικού Ισημερινού κατά δυνάμεων των ανταρτών Farc.

«Ο Σάντος ως πρόεδρος μπορεί να προκαλέσει πόλεμο σε αυτήν την περιοχή του κόσμου. Ο κ. Σάντος μπορεί να θέλει να παραστήσει την Κοκκινοσκουφίτσα, στην πραγματικότητα όμως είναι ένας λύκος, ο οποίος διέταξε την επίθεση στον Ισημερινό. Εάν θέλει να γίνει πρόεδρος θα πρέπει να ξεκινήσει λέγοντας «έκανα λάθος» και να ζητήσει συγγνώμη», τόνισε ο Τσάβες στην εβδομαδιαία του εκπομπή «Γειά σου πρόεδρε».

Ας σημειωθεί ότι ο Σάντος έχει αρνηθεί, κατά τη διάρκεια της προεκλογικής του εκστρατείας, πως ήταν εκείνος που διέταξε την επίθεση στον Ισημερινό ενώ παράλληλα κατηγόρησε τον Τσάβες ότι αναμειγνύεται στην εκλογική διαδικασία της Κολομβίας.

Εντούτοις, ο Σάντος διατρανώνει σε όλους τους τόνους την επιθυμία του να τον συναντήσει «για να αμβλύνουν τις διαφορές» και να βελτιώσουν τις σχέσεις ανάμεσα στις χώρες τους.

Απεργούν οι ναυτικοί στο λιμάνι του Πειραιά

Δεμένα θα παραμείνουν σήμερα, από τις έξι το πρωί, τα πλοία στο λιμάνι του Πειραιά λόγω της 24ωρης απεργίας που έχει αποφασίσει η Πανελλήνια Ναυτική Ομοσπονδία.

Αιτία της απεργιακής κινητοποίησης είναι η εξαγγελία του πρωθυπουργού Γιώργου Παπανδρέου για την άρση του καμποτάζ στη ναυτιλία κρουαζιέρας και οι συνεχιζόμενες δραστηριότητες στο λιμάνι του Πειραιά του υπό σημαία Μάλτας κρουαζιερόπλοιου "Zenith", το οποίο δραστηριοποιείται στον ελλαδικό χώρο χωρίς να απασχολεί Έλληνες ναυτεργάτες όλων των ειδικοτήτων.

Σημειώνεται ότι με το ίδιο σκεπτικό η ΠΝΟ θα συμμετάσχει με 24ωρη Πανελλαδική απεργία στην Εργατική Πρωτομαγιά 2010 το προσεχές Σάββατο 1 Μαΐου 2010.

«Τα περί αθρόας εισροής τουριστικού συναλλάγματος ύψους 1,165 δισ. ευρώ το χρόνο κινούνται στη σφαίρα της φαντασίας και αποτελούν ευσεβείς πόθους και μυθεύματα και μόνο, που έντεχνα και επίμονα καλλιεργούνται τον τελευταίο καιρό, αγνοώντας την πραγματικότητα, υπερτονίζοντας άκριτα ότι θα εισρεύσει τάχα ναυτιλιακό συνάλλαγμα από την απελευθέρωση του καμποτάζ», τονίζει η ΠΝΟ.
