Η ενίσχυση του προϋπολογισμού της NASA κατά 6 δισ. δολάρια, σύμφωνα με τον ίδιο, θα προωθήσει τον σχεδιασμό νέων επιχειρήσεων. Σκιαγραφώντας το φιλόδοξο όραμά του, έθεσε διαδοχικούς στόχους, σε μία βήμα προς βήμα προσέγγιση -έναν «οδικό χάρτη»- με απώτερο στόχο τον Αρη: Μέχρι το 2025 την ανάπτυξη ενός διαστημοπλοίου ικανού για εξερεύνηση στο Βαθύ Διάστημα και από τα μέσα της δεκαετίας του 2030 τη σταδιακή αποστολή αστροναυτών αρχικά σε ένα αστεροειδή, αργότερα σε τροχιά γύρω από τον Αρη και τέλος στην επιφάνεια του Κόκκινου Πλανήτη. «Η Αμερική θα στείλει με ασφάλεια αστροναύτες στον Αρη και θα τους γυρίσει πίσω. Ελπίζω και εγώ να ζω ακόμη μέχρι τότε» υπογράμμισε ο Αμερικανός πρόεδρος. Ο Αμερικανός πρόεδρος επιβεβαίωσε επίσης ότι θα «αναβιώσει» το πρόγραμμα Orion, με μια ελαφρύτερη έκδοση της κάψουλας, η οποία όμως θα χρησιμοποιείται αποκλειστικά ως όχημα διαφυγής από τον Διεθνή Διαστημικό Σταθμό (ISS) σε περίπτωση ατυχήματος. He had built a life in this country. He grew up in Queens, attended high school there, and became a religious leader in his community. He would marry and marry again, have children, and buy a plot nearby where he planned to be buried.

For Ahmad Wais Afzali, the clock on that life started ticking Thursday.

Mr. Afzali, an imam who was also an infrequent police informant, was sentenced in United States District Court in Brooklyn in connection with a plot to set off bombs in the subway, a scheme that would be described as the most significant threat to national security since 9/11.

The imam essentially warned Najibullah Zazi, the admitted organizer of the plot, that he was under surveillance and — failing to grasp the significance of what he stumbled into — urged him to stay out of trouble. Mr. Afzali would plead guilty to lying to federal officials about the phone conversations he had with Mr. Zazi.

But Mr. Afzali said that even in that criminal act, he was a victim of his desire to serve as a bridge between his country and his community. And in trying to please competing constituencies, he ended up failing both.

Mr. Afzali, 38, avoided a prison sentence on Thursday — even the prosecutor conceded that the defendant was “almost certainly” unaware of the seriousness of his conduct — but not punishment. He will be deported if he does not leave the country within 90 days.

“I’m standing in front of you as a convicted felon, a lying imam, which is a physical, emotional and spiritual burden far greater than any sentence you could impose,” Mr. Afzali told Judge Frederic Block in the brief sentencing hearing.

“Honest to God,” he added, “it was never my intention to help those idiots for what they do in the name of Islam.”

This week, Mr. Afzali consented to an interview at his home in Queens, where he elaborated on his conversations with Mr. Zazi, his relationship with the police and his feelings of betrayal by those who had sought his help.

“I cannot express my feelings in words, but I’m going to try,” he said. “Violated. Betrayed. Used to the highest degree. Treated worse than a dog.”

The chain of events that led Mr. Afzali to his fate began last September with a phone call from a detective with the New York Police Department, he said. They needed to talk to him right away.

Mr. Afzali had worked with the police on and off since 9/11, without pay, because, he said, he “was upset because the people involved claimed to follow my faith.”

Minutes after the phone call, a detective and a sergeant were in his living room, having presented several photos and a single question: did he know these men?

Coaxed, he recognized three boys who attended his classes at his former mosque, Mr. Zazi, Adis Medunjanin and Zarein Ahmedzay, now bearded men in their mid-20s. More questions followed, but he could offer only the barest biographical details, he said.

The visit seemed more significant than others, but his visitors would not explain their interest in the men. Before they left, he said, they asked him to find out more about what the men were doing in New York, though they did not say how.

“I knew it was something serious,” Mr. Afzali said, “but I didn’t know how serious it was.”

The following week, the authorities said publicly that the three men were just days away from trying to detonate explosives in the subway in three coordinated suicide attacks.

But on the morning after his conversation with the police, Sept. 11. 2009, Mr. Afzali knew none of this, he said.

He began tracking down Mr. Zazi, speaking first to a distant relative of the man, and then to his father. Shortly before noon, he reached Mr. Zazi. The conversation started awkwardly.

“What’s going on?” Mr. Afzali began.

“Um, what do you mean?” Mr. Zazi said defensively.

Mr. Afzali laughed. “How you been? I’m asking you.”

Mr. Afzali then told Mr. Zazi that the authorities had come asking about him and his two friends. Mr. Afzali said he did not want to know details. He warned that the phone call was being monitored.

And he repeatedly entreated Mr. Zazi to stay out of trouble, telling him: “I know you’re not that kind of person. I know you’re a good person.”

“Just go home,” he said, “be with your father and mother, do your job, keep your head down, mind your own business, don’t get involved in Iraq garbage or Afghanistan garbage. That’s my advice for you.”

President Barack Obama boldly predicted Thursday his new plans for space exploration would lead American astronauts on historic, almost fantastic journeys to an asteroid and then to Mars — and in his lifetime — relying on rockets and propulsion still to be imagined and built.

"I expect to be around to see it," he said of pioneering U.S. trips starting with a landing on an asteroid — a colossal feat in itself — before the long-dreamed-of expedition to Mars. He spoke near the historic Kennedy Space Center launch pads that sent the first men to the moon, a blunt rejoinder to critics, including several former astronauts, who contend his planned changes will instead deal a staggering blow to the nation's manned space program.

"We want to leap into the future," not continue on the same path as before, Obama said as he sought to reassure NASA workers that America's space adventures would soar on despite the impending termination of space shuttle flights.

His prediction was reminiscent of President John F. Kennedy's declaration in 1961, "I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to Earth." That goal was fulfilled in 1969.

Obama did not predict a Mars landing soon. But he said that by 2025, the nation would have a new spacecraft "designed for long journeys to allow us to begin the first-ever crewed missions beyond the moon into deep space."

"We'll start by sending astronauts to an asteroid for the first time in history," he said. "By the mid-2030s, I believe we can send humans to orbit Mars and return them safely to Earth. And a landing on Mars will follow. And I expect to be around to see it."

The biggest criticisms of Obama's plans have been that they have lacked details and goals. Thursday's speech was an attempt to answer, especially since an asteroid is the next step away from Earth's reach.

Στα ευρήματα συγκαταλέγονται λίστα δημοσίων προσώπων, πιθανών στόχων, κατάλογος εταιρειών που έχουν στην κατοχή τους εκρηκτικά, καθώς και δύο πλαστές ταυτότητες, τις οποίες χρησιμοποιούσαν τα μέλη της οργάνωσης. Σε εξέλιξη έρευνες σε διαμέρισμα στην Κυψέλη. Σε ανακοινώσεις που έκανε το απόγευμα της Πέμπτης ο αρχηγός της ΕΛ.ΑΣ. Λευτέρης Οικονόμου ανέφερε ότι στους σκληρούς δίσκους βρέθηκαν αποσπάσματα και πλήρη κείμενα προκηρύξεων της οργάνωσης Επαναστατικός Αγώνας, καθώς και προσχέδιο προκήρυξης χωρίς ημερομηνία. Πρόκειται για προκηρύξεις που καλύπτουν το σύνολο της δράσης του Επαναστατικού Αγώνα. Επίσης, εντοπίστηκαν κατάλογοι με ονόματα πολιτικών, δημοσίων λειτουργών, οικονομικών παραγόντων και δημοσιογράφων, που αποτελούσαν πιθανούς στόχους της οργάνωσης. Ακόμη, βρέθηκε κατάλογος με επωνυμίες και διευθύνσεις 13 εταιριών, όπως λατομείων και άλλων επιχειρήσεων, σε διάφορες περιοχές της χώρας, οι οποίες στο πλαίσιο της δραστηριότητάς τους χρησιμοποιούν εκρηκτικές ύλες. Στα ευρήματα συγκαταλέγονται οδηγίες κατασκευής εκρηκτικών μηχανισμών, στοιχεία για το επίπεδο θωράκισης διαφόρων μοντέλων θωρακισμένων αυτοκινήτων, κωδικοποιημένα στοιχεία κατανομής χρηματικών ποσών, ψηφιακές φωτογραφίες εντυπωμάτων σφραγίδων διαφόρων υπηρεσιών της ΕΛ.ΑΣ. και αξιωματικών αυτής, καθώς και καταχώρηση στοιχείων που περιέχει μια αστυνομική ταυτότητα, διαφόρων προσώπων, με προφανή σκοπό τη χρησιμοποίησή τους για την κατασκευή πλαστών ταυτοτήτων. Το πορτ μπαγκάζ του αυτοκινήτου του κατηγορούμενου για συμμετοχή στην οργάνωση Κ.Γουρνά έκρυβε το ποσό των 119.240 ευρώ, σε χαρτονομίσματα των 100, 50 και 20 ευρώ, η προέλευση των οποίων ερευνάται. Επίσης, έκρυβε δύο πιστόλια Zastava των 9 χιλιοστών, με γεμιστήρες άνευ φυσιγγίων, δύο επιπλέον γεμιστήρες κενούς φυσιγγίων, 125 σφαίρες 9 χιλιοστών, δύο σκληρούς δίσκους ηλεκτρονικού υπολογιστή μεγάλης χωρητικότητας και τρεις φορητούς εξωτερικούς σκληρούς δίσκους. Τα όπλα δεν έχουν χρησιμοποιηθεί σε επίθεση. Στο ίδιο αυτοκίνητο βρέθηκαν και τρεις πλαστές ταυτότητες που φέρουν τη φωτογραφία του ίδιου ατόμου. Οι δύο από αυτές έχουν ακριβώς τα ίδια στοιχεία, στο όνομα Δημοσθένης Μανδαλώζης, ενώ η τρίτη είναι στο όνομα Αναστάσιος Γριβοκωστόπουλος. Η αστυνομία πιθανολογεί ότι με βάση αυτές τις ταυτότητες ενοικιάστηκαν κρησφύγετα της οργάνωσης και ζητεί τη βοήθεια των πολιτών για περισσότερες πληροφορίες. Για την υπόθεση έχουν κριθεί προφυλακιστέοι οι τέσσερις από τους έξι συλληφθέντες, ενώ η απολογία των άλλων δύο αναμένεται την Παρασκευή. Έρευνες σε εξέλιξη Από τα ξημερώματα της Πέμπτης συνεχίζονται οι έρευνες στο διαμέρισμα 5ου ορόφου στην οδό Μήδειας 7 και Πάρου στην Κυψέλη, το οποίο χρησιμοποιούσε η οργάνωση. Το διαμέρισμα ήταν κενό. Ωστόσο, η ΕΛ.ΑΣ. ανακάλυψε ότι η οργάνωση είχε ενοικιάσει και δεύτερο διαμέρισμα στον ίδιο όροφο, χρησιμοποιώντας πλαστή ταυτότητα, στο οποίο ενεργείται ήδη έρευνα. Μέχρι στιγμής έχουν βρεθεί ενδεικτικά κουκούλες, δύο ζευγάρια χειροπέδες, γάντια, μια βιντεοκάμερα και άλλα αντικείμενα. Η έρευνα συνεχίζεται. Οι προκηρύξεις 1. Broadcaster Larry King seeks 8th divorce

U.S. television personality Larry King and his seventh wife both filed for divorce on Wednesday to end their 13-year marriage.

A spokesman for King, 76, said the CNN broadcaster filed for divorce from Shawn Southwick, 50, with whom he has two children.

"His major concern is the welfare of his children and beyond that he'll have no further comment about the divorce," King's spokesman, Howard Rubenstein, told Reuters.

Minutes after King's attorneys filed their court papers, lawyers for Southwick, who is a singer, also filed divorce documents in Los Angeles, Rubenstein said.

Both parties were citing irreconcilable differences.

Dennis Wasser, an attorney for King, told Reuters that the broadcaster wants to "keep this divorce amicable."

King has been married to seven different women, but this is his eighth divorce, because he remarried one of his former spouses and then divorced her again.

The broadcaster hosts "Larry King Live" on CNN, where he interviews political figures and celebrities, and dresses in suspenders that have become his personal trademark. He often allows viewers to call in with questions for guests.

King was seeking joint custody of their children, while Southwick was seeking primary custody.
