Greek Conservative Leader Gives Reform Assurances in Bailout Deal
ATHENS, February 15 (RIA Novosti)
Greek conservative party leader Antonis Samaras has sent a letter to the European Union and the IMF with assurances of implementing new austerity measures, the local TV channels reported on Wednesday.
-
The austerity measures are demanded by the international creditors as a condition to release a 130-billion euro bailout to Greece to help it repay its massive 360-billion euro debt.
-
“If New Democracy wins the next elections in Greece, the party will remain committed to the Program’s objectives and key policies as descried in the MoU (with the international creditors) and the loan agreement,” Samaras, the leader of Greece’s New Democracy party said in his letter.
-
The EU and the IMF demanded written assurances from the leaders of major Greek parties that they will carry through austerity measures regardless of who wins a general election scheduled for April.
