Two Tu-95MS strategic bombers took off from Engels Airbase near the Volga city of Saratov on May 12 and carried out patrolling over neutral waters, said the spokesman as quoted by the RIA Novosti news agency.During the 12-hour mission, the crews "practised instrumental guidance flight and in-flight refueling," the spokesman said.
He said all flights undertaken by Russian aircraft were performed in strict compliance with international law on the use of airspace over neutral waters, without entering the airspace of other states.
The bombers, nicknamed Bears in NATO specification, were shadowed by a NATO F-16 Falcon fighter jet during the patrol.
Russia resumed strategic bomber patrol flights over the Pacific, Atlantic and Arctic oceans in August 2007, following an order of then-president Vladimir Putin.
