The Hellenic Navy (HN) (Greek: Πολεμικό Ναυτικό, Polemikó Naftikó, abbreviated ΠΝ) is the naval force of Greece, part of the Greek Armed Forces. The modern Greek navy has its roots in the naval forces of various Aegean Islands, which fought in the Greek War of Independence. During the periods of monarchy (1833–1924 and 1936–1973) it was known as the Royal Navy (Βασιλικόν Ναυτικόν, Vasilikón Naftikón, abbreviated ΒΝ).The total displacement of all the navy's vessels is approximately 150,000 tons. The motto of the Hellenic Navy is "Μέγα το της Θαλάσσης Κράτος" from Thucydides' account of Pericles' oration on the eve of the Peloponnesian War. This has been roughly translated as "Great is the country that controls the sea". The Hellenic Navy's emblem consists of an anchor in front of a crossed Christian cross and trident, with the cross symbolizing Greek Orthodoxy, and the trident symbolizing Poseidon, the god of the sea in Greek mythology. Pericles' words are written across the top of the emblem. "The navy, as it represents a necessary weapon for Greece, should only be created for war and aim to victory."...............The Hellenic Merchant Marine refers to the Merchant Marine of Greece, engaged in commerce and transportation of goods and services universally. It consists of the merchant vessels owned by Greek civilians, flying either the Greek flag or a flag of convenience. Greece is a maritime nation by tradition, as shipping is arguably the oldest form of occupation of the Greeks and a key element of Greek economic activity since the ancient times. Nowadays, Greece has the largest merchant fleet in the world, which is the second largest contributor to the national economy after tourism and forms the backbone of world shipping. The Greek fleet flies a variety of flags, however some Greek shipowners gradually return to Greece following the changes to the legislative framework governing their operations and the improvement of infrastructure.Blogger Tips and Tricks

London MPs: Tube upgrade is worth £66bn to economy

George Osborne came under pressure to safeguard investment in the Tube today after a cross-party group of London MPs warned it was critical to the economy.

The MPs, representing seats across the capital, signed an Early Day Motion urging the Chancellor to recognise £66 billion of economic benefits modernisation would bring.

The MPs stressed the “absolute dependence” of commuters on the largely pre-war Tube network.
Transport Secretary Philip Hammond is preparing to submit proposals for cuts to the Treasury tomorrow — two weeks ahead of deadline — for the summer-long spending review.

Crucial upgrades to the network could be in danger if Mr Osborne takes 25 to 40 per cent from the transport budget. Sources said he will not downsize the £16 billion Crossrail project, but MPs and business leaders fear this leaves Tube upgrades exposed. Tory MP Mark Field, Labour MP David Lammy and Lib-Dem MP Tom Brake today tabled the motion urging the Chancellor to protect the Underground for the sake of the economy.

The number of signatories is expected to soar as MPs from the capital and across the country add their names.

It reads: “That this House notes the vital role of London as a gateway to investment from overseas into the UK, the absolute dependence of employers and employees on the largely pre-war Tube network, which, having been starved of investment for decades, is part way through a critical upgrade.

And that the economic returns of an upgraded Tube (alongside Crossrail) are estimated at £66 billion; asserts that in this period of great pressure on the public finances that spending should be prioritised according to such returns; and urges the Government to maintain the investment in this vital infrastructure in order to support UK economic growth.

Bulgaria: ex-PM charged with mishandling documents..[ 1464 ]

Bulgaria ex-PM charged over missing state secrets

Sergei Stanishev talks to reporters outside the National
Investigative Service in Sofia - 14 July 2010
Mr Stanishev was Bulgarian prime minister from 2005-09

Bulgaria's former Prime Minister, Sergei Stanishev, has been charged with mishandling classified documents.
Prosecutors say he failed to return seven documents containing state secrets on security and organised crime after losing last year's election.

Mr Stanishev, who is now leader of the opposition Socialists, has denied any wrongdoing.
Bulgaria is under EU pressure to show progress in fighting corruption and organised crime.
Mr Stanishev faces up to two years in prison if he is found guilty.
He said the charges were politically motivated.

The documents had been prepared by the National Security Agency, the interior ministry, the defence ministry, Nato and contained state secrets, the prosecutors said.
In 2008 the European Commission suspended about 500m euros-worth of EU aid to Bulgaria because of concerns about corruption and organised crime.

The EU is to assess Bulgaria's progress on these fronts this month. If it is not satisfied, Sofia stands to lose access to some of 11bn euros ($14bn; £9.2bn) in EU aid.

VLADIVOSTOK, July 15 (RIA Novosti)
A group of Russia's Pacific Fleet warships led by the missile cruiser Varyag on Thursday returned from the United States to the Russian port of Vladivostok.

The group, including the missile cruiser Varyag, the rescue tugboat Foty Krylov and the tanker Boris Butoma commanded by Rear Admiral Vladimir Kasatonov, visited San Francisco, California, on June 21 -July 26.

The voyage to California and back was held as part of an effort to promote U.S.-Russian military cooperation.

On June 23, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev visited the missile cruiser Varyag in San Francisco when he was on an official visit to the United States. He met with California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and visited the Silicon Valley before heading off to Washington, DC, to meet with President Barack Obama.

The sailors were met in Vladivostok by the fleet commander, relatives, friends and military musicians.

"The friendly visit to San Francisco was a success," Adm. Konstantin Sidenko, commander of Russia's Pacific Fleet, said and welcomed the sailors home with the Russian tradition of three roast piglets symbolizing a successful mission.
Russia's Pacific Fleet press service said that mutual friendly visits and joint Russian-U.S. visits have become common.

"Big Turks" Tariq Dad thought he was untouchable..[ 1461 ]

Heroin Lord, Tariq Dad, the... "Big Turks"

Tariq Dad directed one of Britain’s biggest heroin rackets from a penthouse in Bristol and used the spoils to enjoy luxurious trips to Dubai, including one three week stay at the seven-star Burj Al Arab.

Police were unable to capture him conventionally because the “mafia-style” Mr Big would not handle drugs and used networks of dealers to “do his dirty work”.
Detectives told yesterday how he was instead convicted after a unique “riches to rags” sting which deliberately “destroyed” his reputation amongst criminals and "forced him into a corner".

Police systematically targeted lesser members of his gang, repeatedly seized packages of drugs and cash, froze Dad’s offshore bank account, repossessed his car and even paralysed his family’s businesses with health and safety checks.

Senior officers said the criminal underworld no longer trusted him because police were too “hot” on his tail, and Dad began to amass significant debts, forcing him to default on his mortgage.

In desperation he attempted to move in on the crack cocaine market and was caught red handed conducting a deal.
The 43-year-old career criminal was jailed for 11 years at Winchester Crown Court yesterday.
His brother and right hand man Mazar was also jailed for nine and a half years.

After the sentencing, Matt Horne, Head of Investigations for the Serious Organised Crime Agency said: “Tariq Dad thought he was untouchable, using others to do his dirty work while he lived the high life, but we were watching his every move.

“SOCA and its partners attacked each link in the chain to undermine his status. Eventually other criminals would no longer trade with him for fear of being arrested.

“In desperation for cash he was forced to go hands on with a drug deal which gave us the evidence to arrest him. His network has now been completely dismantled."

IN 1990
Dad began running his criminal network in Bristol in the 1990s, and he and his brother have been jailed before for supplying heroin and links to shootings, kidnappings, violence and blackmail.
However they continued to build their drugs empire and enjoyed a “playboy” lifestyle from the profits.

Tariq lived in a penthouse apartment in the 51’02 development in the centre of Bristol with his girlfriend, who was a lap dancer. They both had top of the range BMW sports cars and together with Mazar would frequently fly first class for holidays in Dubai.

Tariq’s nickname was Big Turks because of his ability to source heroin from Turkish drugs dealers. He had an email account in the name “Big Turks the Legend”.

In 2006,
Soca and Avon and Somerset Police began targeting the gang, using surveillance teams and intelligence.

In December that year £15,000 in cash was seized from an associate and four months later a further £85,000 cash was confiscated from Mazar as he drove his Audi sports car.

In 2007
In May 2007 police recovered a 21 kilo package of heroin after following dealers from north London to the west country.
Later that year a surveillance officer tracked Mazar meeting an unidentified man, who was then followed back to London. The officer seized a bottle of water he discarded and forensic tests found his DNA and identified him as a prominent Turkish drug dealer who was later arrested in Istanbul.

With their business crumbling, the Dads stopped operating the drugs network for nine months, before they then tried to move into the crack cocaine market.
IN 2008
In July 2008, police arrested the Dads as they were about to take a delivery of the drug in boxes of teabags from a courier, who was also detained.

Mazar Dad and Wakar Shah, an associate, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to supply cocaine. Tariq Dad and Garrie Jones, another conspirator, were found guilty following a six-week trial.

Omar Tariq, the courier, pleaded guilty in a separate trial for his involvement in the plot and was jailed for eight years.
