The Hellenic Navy (HN) (Greek: Πολεμικό Ναυτικό, Polemikó Naftikó, abbreviated ΠΝ) is the naval force of Greece, part of the Greek Armed Forces. The modern Greek navy has its roots in the naval forces of various Aegean Islands, which fought in the Greek War of Independence. During the periods of monarchy (1833–1924 and 1936–1973) it was known as the Royal Navy (Βασιλικόν Ναυτικόν, Vasilikón Naftikón, abbreviated ΒΝ).The total displacement of all the navy's vessels is approximately 150,000 tons. The motto of the Hellenic Navy is "Μέγα το της Θαλάσσης Κράτος" from Thucydides' account of Pericles' oration on the eve of the Peloponnesian War. This has been roughly translated as "Great is the country that controls the sea". The Hellenic Navy's emblem consists of an anchor in front of a crossed Christian cross and trident, with the cross symbolizing Greek Orthodoxy, and the trident symbolizing Poseidon, the god of the sea in Greek mythology. Pericles' words are written across the top of the emblem. "The navy, as it represents a necessary weapon for Greece, should only be created for war and aim to victory."...............The Hellenic Merchant Marine refers to the Merchant Marine of Greece, engaged in commerce and transportation of goods and services universally. It consists of the merchant vessels owned by Greek civilians, flying either the Greek flag or a flag of convenience. Greece is a maritime nation by tradition, as shipping is arguably the oldest form of occupation of the Greeks and a key element of Greek economic activity since the ancient times. Nowadays, Greece has the largest merchant fleet in the world, which is the second largest contributor to the national economy after tourism and forms the backbone of world shipping. The Greek fleet flies a variety of flags, however some Greek shipowners gradually return to Greece following the changes to the legislative framework governing their operations and the improvement of infrastructure.Blogger Tips and Tricks

Turkey:State policy against the Kurdish minority ..[ 1450 ]

         Ankara reviews PKK recruitment

( UPI )Published: July 13, 2010 at 12:57 PM
ANKARA, Turkey, July 13 (UPI) -- State policy against the Kurdish minority and cultural repression of women is creating more recruits for the Kurdistan Workers' Party, intelligence reports say.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in a conversation Monday with her Turkish counterpart Ahmet Davutoglu expressed her commitment to the fight against the Kurdish terrorist group known by its Turkish initials PKK.

"The PKK remains a common enemy of Turkey, the United States and Iraq and is a threat to the stability of the region," a U.S. State Department spokesman said. "And we continue to support efforts by Turkey and Iraq to deal with the problem of the PKK."

A report by the Turkish police academy's International Terrorism Center said migration from rural areas to urban communities was putting stress on families in the Kurdish south of Turkey. The report found that migration was being used as an incentive to join the separatist organization, Turkey's daily newspaper Today's Zaman reports.

"Anger at the state, some mistakes of the past, forcing people out of villages, threats from soldiers and public humiliation have caused immense resentment among the people," the report read. "Joining the PKK and taking up arms has been shown by the PKK as the only way to get out."
The report also found that women were finding the militant group attractive because its policies toward them
was moderate compared to the general view in Turkey, Today's Zaman added

NASA, Image of the Day,July 13th...[ 1449 ]

The latest NASA "Image of the Day" image.

On its way to a 2014 rendezvous with comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, the European Space Agency's Rosetta spacecraft, with NASA instruments aboard, flew past asteroid Lutetia on Saturday, July 10.

The instruments aboard Rosetta recorded the first close-up image of the biggest asteroid so far visited by a spacecraft. Rosetta made measurements to derive the mass of the object, understand the properties of the asteroid's surface crust, record the solar wind in the vicinity and look for evidence of an atmosphere.
The spacecraft passed the asteroid at a minimum distance of 3,160 kilometers (1,950 miles) and at a velocity of 15 kilometers (9 miles) per second, completing the flyby in just a minute.

But the cameras and other instruments had been working for hours and in some cases days beforehand, and will continue afterwards.
Shortly after closest approach, Rosetta began transmitting data to Earth for processing. Lutetia has been a mystery for many years. Ground telescopes have shown that it presents confusing characteristics.

In some respects it resembles a ‘C-type’ asteroid, a primitive body left over from the formation of the solar system. In others, it looks like an ‘M-type’.
These have been associated with iron meteorites, are usually reddish and thought to be fragments of the cores of much larger objects.

Three British murdered by Afghan soldier ..[ 1448 ]

Three British troops murdered by Afghan soldier in rocket attack

It is thought that one of the men from 1st Battalion Royal Gurkha Rifles was shot dead as he slept in his tent at 2.30am Afghan time.

The other two were on duty in a command centre at the base in Nahr-e Saraj but would not have stood a chance when the man they considered an ally launched his attack without warning.

“Daz” Chant
One of the dead is believed to be a Nepalese Gurkha and the other two were described as UK nationals. Their families were being told today.

The Kabul government branded the soldier a “traitor” and Defence Secretary Liam Fox said: “This is a despicable and cowardly act.” The Afghan fled but his identity is known. As special forces joined in the hunt a military source said: “We are going to track him down.”

It is the second time in nine months that British troops have been killed by members of the Afghan security forces they are training. Afghan president Hamid Karzai apologised for today's attack.
General David Petraeus, commander of Nato forces in Afghanistan, urged his men to continue trusting each other: “This is a joint mission, Afghan and Alliance troopers fighting shoulder-to-shoulder against the Taliban and other extremists. We have sacrificed greatly together, and we must ensure that the trust between our forces remains solid in order to defeat our common enemies. I offer sincere condolences to the families and the fellow service members of our fallen comrades.”

His deputy, British Lieutenant General Nick Parker, said the attack was a “horrific event” and that it would have a “real effect” on UK soldiers.
Seeking to maintain morale among UK forces, he added: “The vast majority of your Afghan partners are real genuine partners and you'll know that because you work together every day.”
He stressed that the Nato mission would not succeed unless Afghan forces were trained up to take over security responsibilities. The fatalities take the British military death toll in the nine-year conflict to 317.

Last November five British soldiers were killed when an Afghan policeman opened fire in a military compound in the Nad-e Ali district. The men, three Grenadier Guards and two military policemen, were off duty and had removed their body armour and helmets as they relaxed after a patrol with Afghan police.

Six other soldiers were injured. The policeman escaped on a motorbike and has not been caught.
Nato and the Afghan security forces have launched a joint investigation into the latest killings.
General Sher Mohammad Karimi, the Afghan Army Chief of Staff, said: “The loss of any of our coalition partners affects us deeply.”

Spokesman Waheed Omar said president Karzai was upset to hear reports that Afghan troops were responsible. “It's a very unfortunate attack and the government of Afghanistan will do everything to make sure the proper traitors are brought to justice,” Mr Omar said.
In the past insurgents have claimed to have deliberately infiltrated the Afghan security forces.
The attack is a setback to Nato's mission to rapidly train the Afghan army and the police to allow US and British troops to start pulling out.

The UK is deploying 300 more troops to Afghanistan, taking the British force to 9,800 plus special forces. But Mr Cameron has made clear he wants to bring British soldiers home by 2015.

Anyone worried about relatives serving in Afghanistan can call a special helpline on 08457 800 900.

The Islamic full veil in France...[ 1447 ]

French MPs vote to ban Islamic full veil in public

Veiled Muslim woman Sandrine Moulleres leaves court with her
husband Lies Hebbadj in Nantes, western France, April 2010
A French Muslim woman was recently fined 22 euros for driving while wearing a full-face veil

BBC., 16:04 GMT, Tuesday, 13 July 2010 17:04 UK
France's lower house of parliament has overwhelmingly approved a bill that would ban wearing the Islamic full veil in public.

There were 335 votes for the bill and only one against in the 557-seat National Assembly.
It must now be ratified by the Senate in September to become law.

The ban has strong public support but critics point out that only a tiny minority of French Muslims wear the full veil.

Many of the opposition Socialists, who originally wanted the ban limited only to public buildings, abstained from voting after coming under pressure from feminist supporters of the bill.

President Nicolas Sarkozy has backed the ban as part of a wider debate on French identity but critics say the government is pandering to far-right voters.

Israeli bulldozers at east Jerusalem..[ 1446 ]

Israeli bulldozers raze 3 east Jerusalem buildings
JERUSALEM Israeli bulldozers have destroyed three unfinished buildings in contested east Jerusalem, raising Palestinian charges that the municipality is resuming house demolitions after a pause to encourage peace talks.
The municipality says the razed structures were not homes, that they were illegally built and not populated.
But 48-year-old Palestinian resident Basem Isawi says one of the buildings was his unfinished house.

Neighborhood residents said on Tuesday that the second structure was also a house while the third was a warehouse.

East Jerusalem house demolitions are a volatile issue because of conflicting Israeli and Palestinian claims to that sector of the holy city. Israel last demolished a house there in October.
