Double Trouble in Twin Black Holes

This image from the Chandra X-ray Observatory shows the central region of the starburst galaxy M82 and contains two bright X-ray sources of special interest. New studies with Chandra and ESA's XMM-Newton show that these two sources may be intermediate-mass black holes, with masses in between those of the stellar-mass and supermassive variety. 

 

These "survivor" black holes avoided falling into the center of the galaxy and could be examples of the seeds required for the growth of supermassive black holes in galaxies, including the one in the Milky Way. This is the first case where good evidence for more than one mid-sized black hole exists in a single galaxy. 

 

The evidence comes from how their X-ray emission varies over time and analysis of their X-ray brightness and spectra, i.e., the distribution of X-rays with energy. These results are interesting because they may help address the mystery of how supermassive black holes in the centers of galaxies form. 

 

M82 is located about 12 million light years from Earth and is the nearest place to us where the conditions are similar to those in the early Universe, with lots of stars forming. Multiple observations of M82 have been made with Chandra beginning soon after launch. 

 

The Chandra data shown here were not used in the new research because the X-ray sources are so bright that some distortion is introduced into the X-ray spectra. 

 

To combat this, the pointing of Chandra is changed so that images of the sources are deliberately blurred, producing fewer counts in each pixel.

The young sons of a firefighter killed battling a blaze at a residential tower block wore his sporting medals as they released 100 balloons at his funeral.

James Shears, 35, from Poole, Dorset, was one of two firefighters who died tackling the fire at Shirley Towers in Southampton, Hampshire, on April 6.

A guard of honour made up of hundreds of firefighters and members of the public lined the streets outside St George's Church in Poole.

Hundreds of colleagues also lined the streets of Southampton on Tuesday for the funeral of Alan Bannon, 38, who died in the same incident.

Following the service, Mr Shears' two sons, Ruben, four, and five-year-old Frankie, helped by their mother Carla, released 100 balloons in memory of their father.

The boys each wore one of their father's two gold medals for judo in the World Firefighter Games.

Mr Shears' coffin was carried to the church by a turntable ladder fire appliance adorned with flowers followed by members of Red Watch from St Mary's Fire Station, Southampton, on foot and a second fire engine.

The Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service standard was draped over the coffin with Mr Shears' helmet on top.

Members of the public were asked to wear colourful clothing to help celebrate his life.

They stood in a respectful silence as the coffin was carried by six pallbearers into the church.

Τουρκία  — Η έκθεση της αμερικανικής Επιτροπής Διεθνούς Θρησκευτικής Ελευθερίας κατατάσσει την Τουρκία στον κατάλογο των 12 σημαντικότερων παραβατών, σε θέματα θρησκευτικής ελευθερίας.

«Ο τρόπος με τον οποίο το τούρκικο κράτος αντιλαμβάνεται την κοσμικότητά του, οδηγεί στην καταπάτηση των θρησκευτικών ελευθεριών των Τούρκων πολιτών και ειδικότερα των μειονοτικών θρησκευτικών ομάδων», επισημαίνει η έκθεση της αμερικανικής Επιτροπής.

Η προστασία του «κοσμικού» κράτους έχει γίνει πολλές φορές πρόσχημα για την επιβολή θρησκευτικών περιορισμών, τονίζεται επίσης στην έκθεση αυτή.

Παράλληλα, η έκθεση αναφέρεται και στην επιρροή που ασκούν οι στρατιωτικοί στην πολιτική ζωή και στην απαγόρευση της θρησκείας στην δημόσια ζωή

Unemployment in Spain has reached 20 percent, meaning 4.6 million people are out of work, the Spanish government announced Friday.
The figure, from the first quarter, is up from 19 percent and 4.3 million people in the previous quarter. It represents the second-highest unemployment rate in the European Union, after Latvia, according to figures Friday from Eurostat, the EU's statistics service.
Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero told Parliament on Wednesday he believes the jobless rate has peaked and will now start to decline.
The first quarter of the year is traditionally poor for Spain because of a drop in labor-intensive activity like construction, agriculture and tourism.
This week, Standard & Poor's downgraded Spain's long-term credit rating and said the outlook is negative.

"We now believe that the Spanish economy's shift away from credit-fuelled economic growth is likely to result in a more protracted period of sluggish activity than we previously assumed," Standard & Poor's credit analyst Marko Mrsnik said.

Gross domestic product growth in Spain is expected to average 0.7 percent annually through 2016, compared with previous expectations of 1 percent annually, he said.
Spain's economic problems are closely tied to the housing bust there, according to The Economist magazine. Many of the newly unemployed worked in construction, it said.

The recession revealed how dependent public finances were on housing-related tax revenues, it said.
Another problem in Spain is that wages are set centrally and most jobs are protected, making it hard to shift skilled workers from one industry to another, the magazine said.

Average unemployment for the 27-member European Union stayed stable in March at 9.6 percent, Eurostat said Friday. That percentage represents 23 million people, it said.

The lowest national unemployment rates were in the Netherlands and Austria, which had 4.1 and 4.9 percent respectively, Eurostat said.

Με νέα παρέμβαση του την Τετάρτη(28/04), ο πρόεδρος της Μarfin Ανδρέας Βγενόπουλος, ζήτησε από την πολιτεία να στηρίξει την επιχειρηματικότητα. Ο κ. Βγενόπουλος από τα Χανιά έκανε λόγω για κακές νοοτροπίες που είχαν ως αποτέλεσμα η χώρα να δοκιμασθεί, επανέλαβε πώς δεν τον ενδιαφέρει η πολιτική καριέρα και επανέφερε την πρόταση του για να ισχύσει για όλους τους πολιτικούς το "Πόθεν Έσχες."

Ο κ. Βγενόπουλος σε ερώτηση αν οι επιχειρηματίες και ο ίδιος προσωπικά είναι διατεθειμένοι να συμβάλουν οικονομικά δίνοντας χρήματα για ενίσχυση της οικονομίας, απάντησε ότι: " Θα πρέπει να βάλουμε στο τραπέζι τις σχέσεις των επιχειρηματιών με το κράτος. Εμείς σαν επιχειρήσεις έχουμε ορισμένα καθήκοντα". Ωστόσο, ο πρόεδρος της marfin εξέφρασε παράπονα για την συμπεριφορά της πολιτείας και τόνισε ότι "προς το παρών υπάρχει ένα πρόγραμμα σταθερότητας και ανάπτυξης το όποιο δεν έχει πείσει απολύτως κανένα ,δεν έχει πείσει εμάς, δεν έχει πείσει τον ελληνικό λαό δεν έχει πείσει τις διεθνείς αγορές. Περιμένομε να δούμε πιο θα είναι το καινούργιο πρόγραμμα που θα βγει, για να δούμε τι προοπτικές επιβίωσης και ανάπτυξης έχει η χώρα".
 Επίσης, ο Πρόεδρος της marfin μίλησε για παθογένειες που και σήμερα υπάρχουν λέγοντας χαρακτηριστικά "θα σας δώσω ένα παράδειγμα. Το ξέρετε ότι αυτή την στιγμή πληρώνουμε όλοι εμείς εργαζόμενους που κάθονται. Ένα χαρακτηριστικό παράδειγμα είναι οι πιλότοι της παλιάς Ολυμπιακής. Στους πιλότους της παλιάς Ολυμπιακής υπάρχουν ένα πολύ μεγάλο κομμάτι από αυτούς που τους είχαμε κάνει έγγραφη, προσφορά εργασίας. Ελάτε να δουλεύετε τους είπαμε κοντά μας, για να πάρετε αυτά τα χρήματα. Μας είπαν όχι. Θα πάμε στη Υπηρεσία Πολιτικής Αεροπορίας. Εκεί που δεν έχουν όχι γραφείο, αλλά ούτε καρέκλα να κάτσουν. Τους προσέφερα δουλειά δεν ήρθαν και είναι αργόμισθοι και θέλετε από μένα να κάνω δωρεά στο κράτος για να πληρώνει τον αργόμισθο που δεν ήλθε σε μένα;"
O κ. Βγενόπουλος χαρακτήρισε κρίσιμη την φάση που  περνά η ελληνική οικονομία και δήλωσε: " Όπως ξέρετε έχει κλείσει ένας πρώτος κύκλος , κατά την γνώμη μου έκλεισε με την ανακοίνωση του προγράμματος σταθερότητας και ανάπτυξης που αποδοκιμάσθηκε πλήρως από όλους και τις αγορές, τώρα πάμε να κλείσει ένας δεύτερος κύκλος με την ανακοίνωση του καινούργιου προγράμματος σταθερότητας και ανάπτυξης το όποιο από ότι φαίνεται θα συμφωνηθεί με το Διεθνές Νομισματικό Ταμείο και μετά θα φανεί αν έχουν πειστεί πάλι οι αγορές που σημαίνει αν μπορούμε να λειτουργήσομε σαν χώρα η, αν δεν έχουν πεισθεί οπότε εκεί θα δημιουργηθεί ένα πρόβλημα που θα ανοίξει ένα τρίτο κύκλο."
Παράλληλα, ο κ. Βγενόπουλος υποστήριξε ότι για να προχωρήσει η χώρα χρειάζεται αρμονία μεταξύ κοινωνίας και πολιτικής και για να υπάρξει αυτό το πράγμα χρειάζονται δυο πράγματα. "Χρειάζεται να εφαρμοσθεί με απόφαση της βουλής πόθεν για όλους τους πολιτικούς και το δεύτερο ότι πρέπει να μας δοθούν τα στοιχεία που είχε ζητήσει ο πρωθυπουργός προεκλογικά και έλεγε που πήγαν τα λεφτά. Διότι αν δεν υπάρξει μια κάθαρση στην πολιτική ζωή του τόπου στις δύσκολες στιγμές που έρχονται είναι εγγυημένη η κοινωνική κρίση ακόμα και το πολιτικό χάος. Θα πρέπει να καταλάβουν οι πολιτικοί ότι πρέπει να περάσουν την διαδικασία αυτοκάθαρσης."
