Explosives found at suspected Greek militant hideout

ATHENS (Reuters) - Greek police found 195 kg (429 lb) of explosives on Saturday at the hideout of a suspected member of the country's most militant guerrilla group, Revolutionary Struggle, who was detained earlier this week.

Police said they had found the stash of ammonium nitrate and fuel oil in a garage registered to a name found on a false identification card seized in raids last week that led to the arrest of six suspected members of the group.

"It is a quite big quantity," police spokesman Thanassis Kokkalakis told Reuters. "It could have brought down a 6-storey apartment block."

Police said the explosive was the same type used in a bomb claimed by Revolutionary Struggle that seriously damaged the Athens Stock Exchange last year.

Prosecutors have charged the six with participating in bomb attacks, participating in a terrorist group, attempted murder, and other crimes. The accused have denied any wrongdoing.

The arrests followed a surge in bomb blasts this year across Athens, which has a history of attacks from left-wing guerrillas that have killed more than a score of people, including diplomats, businessmen and politicians in the past four decades.

Since coming to power in October, the socialist government has made combating guerrillas a priority. The arrests were seen as a victory at a time when the government has had to implement tough austerity measures to fight a growing economic crisis.

Revolutionary Struggle emerged in 2003 after police captured deadly urban guerrilla group November 17. It is best known for firing a rocket-propelled grenade at the U.S. embassy in Athens in 2007. It also tried to kill a minister in 2006.

Έρευνες της αστυνομίας σε δύο σπίτια, στην περιοχή του Καρέα, βρίσκονται σε εξέλιξη εδώ και λίγη ώρα.

Σύμφωνα με τις πρώτες πληροφορίες, η ΕΛΑΣ έχει πληροφορίες ότι πρόκειται για κατοικίες που είχαν νοικιάσει ορισμένοι εκ των συλληφθέντων για συμμετοχή στον «Επαναστατικό Αγώνα» και ίσως έχουν χρησιμοποιηθεί ως γιάφκες.

Τα δύο σπίτια βρίσκονται στο ίδιο περίπου οικοδομικό τετράγωνο και η περιοχή έχει αποκλειστεί από αστυνομικές δυνάμεις.

Έχει περάσει μία εβδομάδα από τις συλλήψεις των έξι κατηγορουμένων για συμμετοχή στον «Επαναστατικό Αγώνα» και οι άνδρες της Αντιτρομοκρατικής δίνουν μάχη με τον χρόνο, προκειμένου να εντοπίσουν τη γιάφκα, όπου έχουν κρύψει τον βαρύτατο οπλισμό της οργάνωσης.

Larry King and his estranged wife might sit down with a marriage counselor next week, but it won't be to save their troubled union.

The CNN star and eighth wife Shawn Southwick discussed seeing a counselor after they filed dueling divorce papers this week, but the sitdown would be part of an effort to maintain stability for their two kids during a split, sources told the Daily News. The couple has two sons, Chance, 11, and Cannon, 9.

"If it happens, the topic would be the kids," one well-placed source said.

King, 76, and Southwick, 50, filed divorce papers minutes apart Wednesday after a blowup fight over Southwick's suspicion her hubby was having an affair with her 46-year-old sister, Shannon Engemann, TMZ reported.

"I believe that there is very little chance for reconciliation in this marriage," King's powerhouse divorce lawyer Dennis Wasser told The News.

Rumors that the sparring spouses might patch things up surfaced after they shared a warm embrace at their son's Little League baseball game Thursday night. Both were wearing their wedding rings.

They expressed their love during the meeting, sources told TMZ, and agreed to speak Friday and meet with a marriage counselor on Monday.

"Don't assume anything. All you can presume is that his major interest is his children," King's spokesman Howard Rubenstein told The News.

Asked about the possibility that the couple might get back together, Engemann said, "That would be great."

She denied an affair with King in an earlier interview, adding that while it's true King bought her gifts and a car, he bought cars for her mom and dad, too.

One friend of King and Southwick said anything is possible.

"Their whole marriage has been one big spat. They're both drama queens. They break up to make up," the friend said. "Shawn has been important in keeping him alive. She helped him lose weight and quit smoking."

King revealed in a 1997 TV Guide interview that he and Southwick didn't sign a prenup.

Israeli soldiers killed a Palestinian in an exchange of fire near the northern Gaza Strip's border with Israel on Friday, hospital officials and the Israeli military said. The military said an army force patrolling the border identified a Palestinian gunman planting explosives near the security fence along the border, east of Gaza City. The gunman threw a hand grenade at the soldiers, who responded by firing back, it said in a statement. Advertisement Gaza emergency services chief Mo'aweya Hassanein said one gunman was killed. A second gunmen was taken to hospital with moderate wounds. The military said it was the second attempt this week by Palestinian militants to plant explosive devices near the border fence. Tensions have risen in Gaza over the past weeks, with a number of fatal incidents recorded following months of relative calm. In the winter of last year Israel responded to near daily rocket and mortar attacks from Gaza on its southern communities by launching a devastating three-week offensive in the coastal strip run by the radical Islamist Hamas movement. Some 1,400 Palestinians, many of them civilians, were killed according to rights groups. Both Hamas and Israel had largely observed an unofficial truce in the year following the Gaza war, but in recent weeks factions and individual militants not linked to Hamas have stepped up their sporadic attacks, prompting Israel to respond with air strikes.

Συμφώνησαν τι θα πουν από κοντά και συγκεκριμένα στα μέσα Μαΐου, όπου εχει προσδιοριστεί χρονικά η επίσημη επίσκεψη του Ρετζέπ Ταγίπ Ερντογάν στην Αθήνα, όπως προκύπτει από την τηλεφωνική επικοινωνία που είχε το απόγευμα της Παρασκευής (16/04) ο Γιώργος Παπανδρέου με τον Τούρκο ομόλογό του.

Οι δύο πρωθυπουργοί συμφώνησαν, για την καλύτερη προετοιμασία της επίσκεψης, να πραγματοποιηθούν σύντομα συναντήσεις μεταξύ των αρμόδιων υπουργών που θα συμμετάσχουν στο Ανώτατο Συμβούλιο Συνεργασίας, ιδιαίτερα στους τομείς των Εξωτερικών και Ευρωπαϊκών Υποθέσεων και της Οικονομικής Συνεργασίας.

Τα δημοσιεύματα που μιλούν για «διαχωρισμό» του Αιγαίου, αποτελούν αποκυήματα φαντασίας, είπε ο πρωθυπουργός Γ.Παπανδρέου στη Βουλή την Παρασκευή (16/04), απαντώντας σε επίκαιρη ερώτηση της γγ του ΚΚΕ.

Η κ. Παπαρήγα κατηγόρησε την κυβέρνηση ότι επιχειρεί διχοτόμηση του Αιγαίου.

Ο κ. Παπανδρέου δήλωσε ότι δεν υπάρχουν σχεδιασμοί για πυραυλικές ασπίδες και διαχωρισμούς στο Αιγαίο.

«Τα δημοσιεύματα που μιλούν για διαχωρισμό του Αιγαίου στον 25ο μεσημβρινό ή για ελληνικές δεσμεύσεις περί στήριξης της ανεξαρτησίας του Κοσόβου και χρήσης της FYROM ως αμερικανικού προτεκτοράτου, αποτελούν αποκυήματα φαντασίας. Αν θέλετε να τα πιστέψετε, κάνετε πολιτική πάνω σε λαθεμένες πληροφορίες και ψευδείς ειδήσεις. Καλλιεργείτε ανησυχίες και τα συνδέετε όλα, με τρόπο που μόνον μια λογική συνωμοσιολογίας θα μπορούσε να τα συνδέσει και βεβαίως αυτά είναι τα στερεότυπα με τα οποία αντιμετωπίζετε συχνά την εξωτερική πολιτική», είπε ο κ. Παπανδρέου στην γγ του ΚΚΕ.

«Υιοθετείτε για λόγους μικροκομματικούς, μια θέση επίσημη αναγνώρισης καθεστώτος αμφισβήτησης για τα Ίμια. Δεν υπάρχει αυτό πουθενά, η Ελλάδα δεν το αναγνωρίζει, τα Ίμια είναι ελληνικό νησί. Βεβαίως για τη Χάγη τίθενται διάφορα θέματα, αλλά γι' αυτό λέμε να προσφύγουμε εμείς στη Χάγη», πρόσθεσε.

Τόνισε ότι το έγγραφο του Αμερικάνου διοικητή του Νατοϊκού Αεροπορικού στρατηγείου της Σμύρνης που όπως αναφέρουν τα δημοσιεύματα κηρύσσει το Αιγαίο ως «γκρίζα ζώνη», έχει ανακληθεί.

Στην ερώτησή της, η κ. Παπαρήγα είχε δηλώσει:

«Πάτε να συγκαλύψετε το ζήτημα μέσα από την ΝΑΤΟποίηση και διχοτόμηση του Αιγαίου, κάτι που θα έχει επίπτωση στην άμυνα των νησιών. Εμείς δεν λέμε να πάρουμε την 'κόκκινη μηλιά' - τα ζητήματα μπορούν να διευθετηθούν. Όμως οι οξύτατοι ανταγωνισμοί στην περιοχή και με δεδομένο ότι το ΝΑΤΟ αναγνωρίζει τις γκρίζες ζώνες που αναγνωρίζει η Τουρκία μας κάνει να ανησυχούμε. Δεν υπάρχουν συμφωνίες στον σύγχρονο κόσμο που δεν οδηγούν σε νέους γύρους πολέμων», πρόσθεσε η γγ του ΚΚΕ.
