The Hellenic Navy (HN) (Greek: Πολεμικό Ναυτικό, Polemikó Naftikó, abbreviated ΠΝ) is the naval force of Greece, part of the Greek Armed Forces. The modern Greek navy has its roots in the naval forces of various Aegean Islands, which fought in the Greek War of Independence. During the periods of monarchy (1833–1924 and 1936–1973) it was known as the Royal Navy (Βασιλικόν Ναυτικόν, Vasilikón Naftikón, abbreviated ΒΝ).The total displacement of all the navy's vessels is approximately 150,000 tons.The motto of the Hellenic Navy is "Μέγα το της Θαλάσσης Κράτος" from Thucydides' account of Pericles' oration on the eve of the Peloponnesian War. The Hellenic Navy's emblem consists of an anchor in front of a crossed Christian cross and trident, with the cross symbolizing Greek Orthodoxy, and the trident symbolizing Poseidon, the god of the sea in Greek mythology. Pericles' words are written across the top of the emblem. "The navy, as it represents a necessary weapon for Greece, should only be created for war and aim to victory."...............The Hellenic Merchant Marine refers to the Merchant Marine of Greece, engaged in commerce and transportation of goods and services universally. It consists of the merchant vessels owned by Greek civilians, flying either the Greek flag or a flag of convenience. Greece is a maritime nation by tradition, as shipping is arguably the oldest form of occupation of the Greeks and a key element of Greek economic activity since the ancient times. Nowadays, Greece has the largest merchant fleet in the world, which is the second largest contributor to the national economy after tourism and forms the backbone of world shipping. The Greek fleet flies a variety of flags, however some Greek shipowners gradually return to Greece following the changes to the legislative framework governing their operations and the improvement of infrastructure.

The speakers of Russia's two houses of parliament - both targeted by EU sanctions - were at Vladimir Putin's side as he signed the law annexing Crimea

President Vladimir Putin has signed a law formalising Russia's takeover of Crimea from Ukraine, despite fresh sanctions from the EU and the US.

The European Union's latest measures target 12 people involved in Russia's annexation of the peninsula.
Earlier on Friday Ukraine and the EU signed an accord forging closer political ties.
European leaders also said they would step up efforts to reduce energy dependency on Russia.
The EU's new sanctions add to an existing list of 21 officials affected by travel bans and asset freezes.
They include Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin and two close aides of Vladimir Putin, Sergey Glazyev and Vladislav Surkov.

The speakers of Russia's two houses of parliament, Valentina Matviyenko and Sergei Naryshkin - both at Mr Putin's side as he signed the Crimea law - are also included.

While the list targets several figures close to the Russian president, it does not hit his inner circle as hard as the sanctions announced by the US on Thursday.
Shares fell sharply in Moscow on Friday as investors assessed the impact of Western sanctions on Russia's economy.
Two credit rating agencies have now downgraded Russia's outlook from stable to negative.
The accord signed by the EU and Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk in Brussels on Friday contains the political part of the EU Association Agreement rejected in November by Viktor Yanukovych, who was then Ukraine's president.
That decision triggered violent protests, Mr Yanukovych's eventual overthrow and Russia's subsequent move into Crimea.
In a separate development on Friday, Ukrainian police detained the head of the Naftogaz state energy firm, Yevhen Bakulin.
He is accused of embezzling $4bn (£2.4bn) during Mr Yanukovych's time in power.
Officials investigating corruption at Ukraine's agriculture ministry are reported to have seized tens of thousands of dollars in cash.

Search for Malaysian plane will be 'long haul,' transport minister says

(CNN) -- Another day. Still nothing.

Australian authorities said Friday they had called off their search for the day for two mystery objects that may or may not be parts of missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370.

Military surveillance planes, a commercial jet and two merchant ships combing the area failed to find any trace of the objects, which were spotted Sunday by a satellite in the treacherous waters of the southern Indian Ocean. The spot is more than 1,400 miles from the west coast of Australia.

Flight 370 vanished 14 days ago with 239 people aboard. The announcement Thursday by Australian officials that they had spotted something raised hopes of a breakthrough in a frustrating search that has yielded few clues about what might have happened to the plane after it stopped communicating with the ground, appeared to veer wildly off course then dropped out of sight for good.

Βολές και προειδοποιήσεις από τη διεθνή κοινότητα δέχεται η κυβέρνηση Ερντογάν μετά την απόφαση του ίδιου του πρωθυπουργού να κλείσει το Twitter, προκειμένου να δείξει «την ισχύ της Τουρκίας».

Ο Στέφαν Φούλε, αρμόδιος επίτροπος για τη διεύρυνση υπενθύμισε στην Αγκυρα ότι η ελευθερία έκφρασης είναι βασική αρχή της ΕΕ. Το μήνυμα Φούλε γράφτηκε στο Twitter στα τουρκικά.

Αλλά και η αντιπρόεδρος της Κομισιόν Νέλι Κρους χαρακτήρισε την κίνηση της κυβέρνησης Ερντογάν «ανούσια και δειλή». Ωστόσο, παρά τα μέτρα αποκλεισμού από τις τουρκικές αρχές, πολλοί χρήστες του Twitter, ξεπέρασαν ήδη την απαγόρευση χρησιμοποιώντας άλλους servers ή τα δίκτυα VPN.

Όπως ανακοίνωσε στο Reuters ο βουλευτής του Ρεπουμπλικανικού Λαϊκού κόμματος Ακιφ Χαμζατζέμπι, θα εφεσιβάλει τη δικαστική απόφαση, σύμφωνα με την οποία εφαρμόσθηκε ο αποκλεισμός της πρόσβασης στο Twitter στην Τουρκία.

Ο ίδιος πρόσθεσε ότι το κόμμα θα καταθέσει επίσης αγωγή κατά του τούρκου πρωθυπουργού Ρετζέπ Ταγίπ Ερντογάν για παραβίαση των ατομικών ελευθεριών.
Ο αντιπρόεδρος της τουρκικής κυβέρνησης Αλί Μπαμπατζάν δήλωσε ότι θεωρεί πως η απαγόρευση της πρόσβασης στο Twitter είναι προσωρινή και αναμένει την εξεύρεση αμοιβαία αποδεκτής λύσης.

Υπενθυμίζεται ότι οι αρχές των τουρκικών τηλεπικοινωνιών (TΙΒ) ανακοίνωσαν χθες το βράδυ τον αποκλεισμό της πρόσβασης στο Twitter κατόπιν απόφασης δικαστηρίου, μετά την απειλή που εκτόξευσε ο τούρκος πρωθυπουργός Ρετζέπ Ταγίπ Ερντογάν ότι θα προβεί σε αντίποινα για τις τηλεφωνικές παρακολουθήσεις που τον εκθέτουν στο σκάνδαλο διαφθοράς που συγκλονίζει το καθεστώς του.
