The Hellenic Navy (HN) (Greek: Πολεμικό Ναυτικό, Polemikó Naftikó, abbreviated ΠΝ) is the naval force of Greece, part of the Greek Armed Forces. The modern Greek navy has its roots in the naval forces of various Aegean Islands, which fought in the Greek War of Independence. During the periods of monarchy (1833–1924 and 1936–1973) it was known as the Royal Navy (Βασιλικόν Ναυτικόν, Vasilikón Naftikón, abbreviated ΒΝ).The total displacement of all the navy's vessels is approximately 150,000 tons.The motto of the Hellenic Navy is "Μέγα το της Θαλάσσης Κράτος" from Thucydides' account of Pericles' oration on the eve of the Peloponnesian War. Pericles' words are written across the top of the emblem. "The navy, as it represents a necessary weapon for Greece, should only be created for war and aim to victory."...............The Hellenic Merchant Marine refers to the Merchant Marine of Greece, engaged in commerce and transportation of goods and services universally. It consists of the merchant vessels owned by Greek civilians, flying either the Greek flag or a flag of convenience. Greece is a maritime nation by tradition, as shipping is arguably the oldest form of occupation of the Greeks and a key element of Greek economic activity since the ancient times. Chechen warlord who threatened Sochi reported dead

MOSCOW (AP) — An Islamic militant group in Russia's North Caucasus is reporting the death of its leader, who had threatened to attack Sochi Olympics and was one of Russia's most wanted men.
The death of Chechen warlord Doku Umarov has been reported previously, but this appears to be the first time by the organization he headed.
The Caucasus Emirate announced the "martyrdom" of Umarov in a statement posted Tuesday on the website of Kavkaz Center, which serves as a mouthpiece for Islamic militant groups. No cause was given.
Chechnya's Kremlin-backed leader had reported Umarov's death in January, a month before the Olympics, but his claim was not verified.
The ITAR-Tass news agency quoted Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov saying that Tuesday's announcement showed he was right that Umarov died in a special operation.

Τα... φωτα του για το πως μπορεί να νικήσει η Γιουνάιτεντ τον Ολυμπιακό με 3-0 έδωσε ο Γιάννης Αναστασίου στην ιστοσελίδα της αγγλικής εφημερίδας "Guardian".

Ιδού όσα είπε: "Το πιο σημαντικό ήταν ότι προετοιμαστήκαμε καλά, πιάσαμε μία καταπληκτική απόδοση, διότι αμυνθήκαμε σωστά και σκοράραμε τρεις φορές, ξεκινήσαμε την προετοιμασία μας για το ματς τέσσερις μέρες πριν και δουλέψαμε ως γκρουπ συγκεντρωμένα σε λεπτομέρειες τακτικής, στο πως παίζει ο Ολυμπιακός, ποιες είναι οι αδυναμίες του, αλλά και τα δυνατά του σημεία.

Προσπαθήσαμε να επιβάλλουμε το παιχνίδι μας πιέζοντας ψηλά, όταν είχαν την κατοχή της μπάλας και να εξαπολύσουμε επίθεση, όταν είχαμε εμείς την μπάλα, η ομάδα εκτέλεσε εξαιρετικά το πλάνο της, αλλά ήταν σημαντικό ότι ήμασταν καλά από πλευράς φυσικής κατάστασης. Ξέραμε από πριν ότι οι παίκτες χρειάζεται να τρέξουν, να τρέξουν πολύ και αυτό κάναμε".

Για το παιχνίδι της Τετάρτης τόνισε: "Θα είναι ένα εντελώς διαφορετικό ματς στο Μάντσεστερ, διότι αυτοί έχουν το προβάδισμα του 2-0, η Γιουνάιτεντ χρειάζεται να ξεκινήσει γρήγορα, διότι οι ελληνικές ομάδες δύσκολα μπορούν να κοπιάρουν τον γρήγορο ρυθμό των συλλόγων της Πρέμιερ Λιγκ. Περιμένω να το κάνει αυτό.

Ουκρανική στρατιωτική βάση στη Συμφερόπολη, πρωτεύουσα της Κριμαίας, δέχθηκε εισβολή ενόπλων στρατιωτών, με αποτέλεσμα να χάσει τη ζωή του από πυρά ένας Ουκρανός αξιωματικός, όπως μεταδίδει το πρακτορείο Reuters.

Το γεγονός ανέφερε, μέσω τηλεφώνου από την Κριμαία, ο Ουκρανός στρατιωτικός Βλάντισλαβ Σελέζνιοφ, ο οποίος βρίσκεται στην Κριμαία.
Σύμφωνα με το δίκτυο Sky News, οι άνδρες οι οποίοι έχουν εισβάλει στη βάση ανήκουν στον ρωσικό στρατό.

Ο κ. Σελεζνιόφ ανέφερε επίσης ότι έχει συλληφθεί από τις επιτιθέμενες δυνάμεις και ένας Ουκρανός λοχαγός, ο οποίιος φέρεται να έχει τραυματιστεί.
Την είδηση του θανάτου του Ουκρανού στρατιωτικού επιβεβαίωσε και το ουκρανικό υπουργείου Άμυνας, με μήνυμα στον ιστότοπο κοινωνικής δικτύωσης facebook.

«Έχουμε ταμπουρωθεί στον δεύτερο όροφο. Το αρχηγείο έχει καταληφθεί και ο διοικητής μας έχει συλληφθεί. Θέλουν να καταθέσουμε τα όπλα μας, αλλά εμείς δεν σκοπεύουμε να παραδοθούμε», πρόσθεσε, ενώ σημείωσε ότι οι άνδρες οι οποίοι έχουν εισβάλει στη βάση δεν φέρουν διακριτικά και έχουν τα πρόσωπά τους καλυμμένα.

«Σήμερα Ρώσοι στρατιώτες άνοιξαν πυρ κατά ένστολων Ουκρανών. Αυτό αποτελεί έγκλημα πολέμου», τόνισε σε δηλώσεις του ο μεταβατικός πρωθυπουργός της Ουκρανίας Αρσένιι Γιάτσενιουκ, ο οποίος σημείωσε ότι, με ευθύνη Ρώσων στρατιωτών, η κρίση στην Κριμαία από πολιτική λαμβάνει στρατιωτικό χαρακτήρα.

Ο κ. Γιάτσενιουκ κάλεσε τον υπουργό Άμυνας της χώρας του να συγκαλέσει συνάντηση με τους ομολόγους του της Μεγάλης Βρετανίας, της Γαλλίας και της Ρωσίας, χωρών οι οποίες είχαν εγγυηθεί, με βάση συνθήκη του 1994, το απαραβίαστο των συνόρων της Ουκρανίας.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Navy ship that has been helping search for the missing Malaysian airliner is dropping out of the hunt, U.S. military officials said Monday.
The Navy's 7th Fleet determined that long-range naval aircraft are a more efficient means of looking for the plane or its debris, now that the search area has broadened into the southern Indian Ocean. Long-range Navy P-3 and P-8 surveillance aircraft remain involved in the search, Cmdr. William Marks, a spokesman for the 7th Fleet, said in an emailed statement.

The USS Kidd, an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer that has been searching in the Indian Ocean, will return to its normal duties.
The Malaysian Airlines plane has been missing for more than a week. No debris or wreckage associated with the aircraft has been found.

The P-8 Poseidon and the P-3 Orion can cover up to 15,000 square miles in one nine-hour flight. The aircraft also are equipped with advanced surface search radars and electro-optical sensors and can fly at low altitudes if visual identification is needed.

The decision was made in consultation with the government of Malaysia. A Pentagon spokesman said Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel told Malaysian Minister of Defense Hishammuddin Tun Hussein on Monday evening that the United States is fully committed to working with Malaysia to locate the plane.

(CNN) -- As investigators search for clues to unravel the mystery of where Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 went, there were several key developments over the weekend.

Where are investigators searching now?

The search has expanded to cover large swaths of land and sea, including 11 countries and deep oceans. Where the plane went is anybody's guess. As 26 nations help try to find the missing plane, there's also a process of elimination in which investigators try to piece together where the aircraft isn't. Pakistan said Sunday that the plane never showed up on its civilian radars and would have been treated as a threat if it had. The Times of India reported that India's military also said there was no way the plane could have flown over India without being picked up on radar.
