The Hellenic Navy (HN) (Greek: Πολεμικό Ναυτικό, Polemikó Naftikó, abbreviated ΠΝ) is the naval force of Greece, part of the Greek Armed Forces. The modern Greek navy has its roots in the naval forces of various Aegean Islands, which fought in the Greek War of Independence. During the periods of monarchy (1833–1924 and 1936–1973) it was known as the Royal Navy (Βασιλικόν Ναυτικόν, Vasilikón Naftikón, abbreviated ΒΝ).The total displacement of all the navy's vessels is approximately 150,000 tons. The motto of the Hellenic Navy is "Μέγα το της Θαλάσσης Κράτος" from Thucydides' account of Pericles' oration on the eve of the Peloponnesian War. This has been roughly translated as "Great is the country that controls the sea". The Hellenic Navy's emblem consists of an anchor in front of a crossed Christian cross and trident, with the cross symbolizing Greek Orthodoxy, and the trident symbolizing Poseidon, the god of the sea in Greek mythology. Pericles' words are written across the top of the emblem. "The navy, as it represents a necessary weapon for Greece, should only be created for war and aim to victory."...............The Hellenic Merchant Marine refers to the Merchant Marine of Greece, engaged in commerce and transportation of goods and services universally. It consists of the merchant vessels owned by Greek civilians, flying either the Greek flag or a flag of convenience. Greece is a maritime nation by tradition, as shipping is arguably the oldest form of occupation of the Greeks and a key element of Greek economic activity since the ancient times. Nowadays, Greece has the largest merchant fleet in the world, which is the second largest contributor to the national economy after tourism and forms the backbone of world shipping. The Greek fleet flies a variety of flags, however some Greek shipowners gradually return to Greece following the changes to the legislative framework governing their operations and the improvement of infrastructure.Blogger Tips and Tricks

Pro and anti-Maduro marches in Venezuela...[ 3629 ]

Pro and anti-Maduro marches gather thousands in Venezuela

  BBC.,//

Irene Caselli reports from Caracas: "More marches are expected to take place on Sunday"

Supporters and opponents of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro have taken to the streets of the capital, Caracas, in rival marches.
The demonstrations come at a time of growing political tension in Venezuela.
Three people were killed during anti-government protests on Wednesday, and some 100 students were arrested.
Mr Maduro accused the opposition of stirring up trouble as part of a coup plot and urged his supporters to march for peace on Saturday.

Government supporters began arriving at Venezuela Square, in central Caracas, in the morning.
They were dressed predominantly in red or in Venezuela's national colours - blue, yellow and red.
'Alarming reports' Hours later Mr Maduro addressed thousands of his supporters in Bolivar Avenue. The march was broadcast live on national television.
"I call all the people to the streets in order to defend peace," he said.
He warned that his government would not give in to those he described as "fascists," including former president of neighbouring Colombia, Alvaro Uribe.
"Alvaro Uribe is behind this, financing and directing these fascist movements.
"He intended to use a Venezuelan television channel [NTN24] to do the same they did on 11 April 2002," Mr Maduro said, referring to a failed military coup against the late President, Hugo Chavez.

Mr Uribe, a centre-right politician, was a fierce enemy of Mr Chavez and accused the late president of supporting Colombia's largest rebel group, the Farc.
Mr Maduro said police had been looking for opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez, accused of ordering "all these violent kids, which he trained, to destroy half of Caracas to then go into hiding".
Mr Lopez has not been seen in public since an arrest warrant was issued for him on Wednesday.
The United States Secretary of State, John Kerry, has issued a statement expressing concern by the rising tensions in Venezuela.
"We are particularly alarmed by reports that the Venezuelan government has arrested or detained scores of anti-government protestors and issued an arrest warrant for opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez," read the statement.
Opposition demonstrators, including a movement known as Mothers in White, gathered at Las Mercedes neighbourhood in eastern Caracas.

Opposition march in Caracas "Freedom for the prisoners," reads the banner held by opposition protesters.
Thousands of people, mostly wearing white, marched towards the Courts of Justice building and stopped for a memorial ceremony to the three demonstrators killed on Wednesday: Bassil da Costa, Juan Montoya and Robert Redman.
Student leader Enrique Altimari said the main aim of their "peaceful protest" was to "pay tribute to the victims".
'Not after dark' He said the march would end before night fell, to avoid a repeat of the incidents of Wednesday.
The three victims were shot dead by unknown gunmen as the opposition marches came to an end.
"The streets at night are not a safe place for us. We would not be achieving any goal and would only fall in the trap set up by violent pro-government groups," Mr Altimari said.
The opposition march ended before dusk with clashes between police, who fired tear gas in attempts to disperse the crowd, and demonstrators who hurled stones.
Reports say three people were injured.
The main opposition grievances are high inflation, crime and the shortage of some staples.

Anti-Maduro protest in Caracas The march against Maduro's government descended into violence
The government has blamed the shortages on "saboteurs" and "profit-hungry corrupt businessmen".
Venezuelan politics has become increasingly polarised.
Mr Maduro was elected last April by a narrow margin, defeating the centre-right candidate, Henrique Capriles, who denounced electoral fraud.
A former union leader, Mr Maduro was a close ally of President Hugo Chavez, who died of cancer last March after 14 years in office.
Mr Capriles says the government's left-wing policies have led to economic collapse, including high inflation - 56.2% in 2013, according to official figures.

Australia's queen of the snow Torah Bright in Sochi ...[ 3628 ]

Torah Bright reveals she didn’t train for two months ahead of halfpipe silver medal at Sochi

.
IT’S the equivalent of an Olympic swimmer not touching the water for months before an Olympics.
In an extraordinary revelation, Torah Bright has revealed she did not train at all for the halfpipe for two months leading up the Sochi Winter Olympics.
“I haven’t ridden halfpipe since December until I won my medal the other night or whenever it was,” she confessed.
You read it right. Australia’s most successful female Winter Olympian doubled her personal medal tally in her pet event this week with absolutely no training for two months beforehand.
That’s a better trick than anything she pulled in the pipe the other night.

But Bright wasn’t done with the surprises, letting slip that today’s boardercross is the event she’s trained harder for at these Games than any other.
The boardercross event had always seemed like an afterthought, a race Bright would try her luck in after her two main events with no real expectations of success. Yet she revealed overnight that in the lead-up to Sochi, it had been her main focus.
“Boardercross is the one I’m most prepared for. I’ve ridden more boardercross than anything,” she said.
Boardercross is a very different event to Torah’s two previous events of halfpipe and slopestyle, both of which involve a series of judged flips and jumps.
The helter-skelter event is a race to the bottom in an elimination format with six racers battling each other along a hair-raising course dotted with huge berms and jumps.

It’s icy chaos. And above all, it’s fast. But as Torah revealed, if there’s one thing she really loves, it’s speed.
“I love going fast, I love racing cars, and when you’re racing, you’re living and everything else is just waiting.
“This event to me is more fun because it’s less challenging mentally and physically for me.
“I am so thrilled to have the opportunity to be here and race.”
Torah Bright is the athlete who keeps surprising at these Games. You can no more pin down her personality than you could pin a live, flapping butterfly to a corkboard.
Bright arrived in Sochi extremely fired up to say the least. She and her brother and coach Ben were fired up at the course designers, fired up at the snow quality, fired up at Russia, fired up at the Olympics, fired up, it seemed, about everything.

Yet even as she voiced her strong opinions, she kept smiling. Truth be told, she never stops smiling.
You should see how much even her rivals love her. She’s got a hug for everyone in Sochi and everyone’s got a hug for her. Even at the training course, everyone wants to talk to her. Torah Bright is snow sports royalty.
Bright only qualified for the boardercross in Sochi at the last minute, an eighth-placed finish at a World Cup race in Andorra securing her spot – but only after a couple of overseas athletes dropped out.
“When I started this boardercross journey, everybody laughed at me, they said ‘there’s no way she can do it’,” she said.
“It’s not easy at all, not one bit. I have put everything on the sideline really to give time to boardercross and learning the technique and learning how to ride these boards.”
Bright has received help from the best there is – in the shape of Australian flagbearer and men’s boardercross gold medal favourite Alex “Chumpy” Pullin.
“Chumpy’s been great and everyone’s been awesome with sharing their knowledge with me. I’m just excited to talk to everybody and get their feedback and just dream of going really, really fast tonight.”
Many experienced winter sports pundits here in Sochi rate Bright’s medal chances much higher than her official world boardercross ranking in the 20s, on account of the fact she’s got nothing to lose with a medal already securely in her luggage.
Pullin himself believes Bright can give the event a shake.
“Look, it’s certainly not her strongest event given that she only started being back on tour for the last couple of years.
“But the fact is she’s a talented snowboarder and she’s a fierce competitor. Underneath all the smiles and happiness, she wants to win.
“I spoke to her before dropping in. I said ‘look, this is your course as much as anyone else’s right now.”
Bright will be joined in the snowboard cross today by Belle Brockhoff, another outspoken Aussie Winter Olympian who is our only openly gay athlete in Sochi.
Neither of them can be ruled out, but Bright has momentum on her side, as well as the knowledge that this is her last competitive hit-out in any event all winter.
Bright heads off to fulfil sponsors’ obligations after Sochi. That’s snowboard speak for making videos in some of the most exotic snowboarding locations on earth. Nice work if you can get it.
First things first: speed. One last little burst of fired-up Torah, this time not in the press conference room, but on the snow.

London (CNN) -- After a wild and stormy night that claimed two lives, many communities in southern England face a high risk of flooding Saturday from still-rising rivers.

Severe flood warnings are in place along the Thames Valley to the west of London, as well as in southwest and central England.

The Environment Agency warned that flood risk will continue for at least another week.

An elderly passenger died Friday aboard the British-based cruise ship MS Marco Polo after it was hit by a "freak wave during adverse sea conditions," according to the ship's owner, Cruise & Maritime Voyages.

Princes pitch in on flood relief efforts

The rogue wave struck as the ship made its way into the English Channel en route from the Azores to its home port in Tilbury, southeast England, it said.

As high winds whipped southern England on Friday night, a 49-year-old woman was killed when the front of a building collapsed onto her vehicle in central London, police said. Two other passengers in the car were injured. Police said the collapse happened during bad weather, but they were unable to say if it was directly related.

On Saturday, amid increasing questions about the government response, Prime Minister David Cameron visited Chertsey, Surrey and thanked the military for its help during the crisis.

The Environment Agency reported that 16 severe flood warnings remained in place Saturday, meaning there is a danger to life, as well as 151 lower-level flood warnings in different parts of the country.

Thames Barrier, which is deployed to prevent the tidal river now flooding central London with devastating consequences, was shut for a record 16th consecutive time to help reduce flood risk along the Thames, according to the Environment Agency.

The emergency will continue over the coming days for the Somerset Levels and Moors, where river levels continue to rise, posing a further threat to those already affected by recent flooding, the agency said.

"Despite an improving forecast the risk of flooding will continue for many communities in southern parts of England over the next few days," Paul Leinster, the Environment Agency's chief executive, said in a statement.

More rain is forecast over the weekend, pushing river levels ever higher.

Homes sandbagged

After the wettest January in England in 2½ centuries, February has so far brought little relief.

The River Thames has reached its highest levels for over 60 years in some places, bringing flood misery to thousands of people living in the Thames Valley.

The towns of Maidenhead and Windsor, where the queen has a castle, and communities in the counties of Surrey, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire and Reading are all at risk from the Thames.

Residents desperate to hold back the rising waters have sandbagged entrances to their homes and businesses.

Princes William and Harry lent their help to the flood defense effort Friday morning, as they joined soldiers who hefted sandbags in the village of Datchet in Berkshire.

There is also a risk of flooding on the River Severn in Gloucester and on the Somerset Levels, in southwest England. Some communities on the Somerset Levels have been inundated for weeks.

As well as high river levels, saturated ground from weeks of heavy rain mean that there is nowhere for water to go.

Severe gales, large waves and high sea levels were expected to bring a high risk of coastal flooding to parts of the Dorset coast on Saturday, the Environment Agency said.

Other areas along the south coast of England will also be battered by extreme weather.

Nearly 6,000 properties have been flooded since the beginning of December, more than 1,000 of them in the wealthy areas in the Thames Valley. Leinster said more than 1.3 million properties have been protected since the start of December through the Environment Agency and use of the Thames Barrier.
