Περισσότεροι από 640 άνθρωποι, μεταξύ των οποίων και πολλά παιδιά,
τραυματίστηκαν κατά τη διάρκεια της νύχτας και σήμερα το πρωί στην
Τρίπολη από πυροτεχνήματα που εκτοξεύτηκαν στην λιβυκή πρωτεύουσα με την
ευκαιρία του εορτασμού του Μουλέντ, των γενεθλίων του προφήτη Μωάμεθ.
Σύμφωνα με το επίσημο πρακτορείο ειδήσεων της Λιβύης Lana, που επικαλείται νοσοκομειακές πηγές, τα θύματα φέρουν κυρίως εγκαύματα στα χέρια και στα μάτια. Σε ορισμένες περιπτώσεις οι γιατροί προχώρησαν στον ακρωτηριασμό δακτύλων των τραυματιών.

Οι Λίβυοι συνηθίζουν να γιορτάζουν τα γενέθλια του Μωάμεθ με φαντασμαγορικές επιδείξεις πυροτεχνημάτων και κροτίδων και οι τραυματισμοί είναι σύνηθες φαινόμενο.

Ωστόσο, τα τελευταία χρόνια παρατηρείται σημαντική αύξηση του αριθμού των θυμάτων, κυρίως επειδή στην κατασκευή των κροτίδων χρησιμοποιούνται ισχυρές εκρηκτικές ύλες.
