The Hellenic Navy (HN) (Greek: Πολεμικό Ναυτικό, Polemikó Naftikó, abbreviated ΠΝ) is the naval force of Greece, part of the Greek Armed Forces. The modern Greek navy has its roots in the naval forces of various Aegean Islands, which fought in the Greek War of Independence. During the periods of monarchy (1833–1924 and 1936–1973) it was known as the Royal Navy (Βασιλικόν Ναυτικόν, Vasilikón Naftikón, abbreviated ΒΝ).The total displacement of all the navy's vessels is approximately 150,000 tons.The motto of the Hellenic Navy is "Μέγα το της Θαλάσσης Κράτος" from Thucydides' account of Pericles' oration on the eve of the Peloponnesian War. Greece is a maritime nation by tradition, as shipping is arguably the oldest form of occupation of the Greeks and a key element of Greek economic activity since the ancient times. NASA's Desert RATS, or Research and Technology Studies, team made its 13th trip to the desert for another round of analog testing. 

The Desert RATS tests offer a chance for a NASA-led team of engineers, astronauts and scientists to conduct technology development research in the Arizona desert. 

The location offers a good stand-in for destinations for future planetary exploration missions. 

This year's tests take place Aug. 31-Sept. 15. This image is a night-time shot of the rover and habitat unit.

SRINAGAR, India (Reuters) - At least 13 people were killed on Monday in anti-government and Koran demonstrations across Indian Kashmir, police said, in the biggest single death toll from protests in the disputed region in years.
The toll includes at least seven people killed in police clashes after thousands of Muslim protesters set fire to a Christian missionary school and government buildings in two Kashmiri districts to denounce reports that copies of the Koran, the Muslim holy book had been damaged in the United States.

Police said these demonstrations, attended by thousands in western Kashmir, quickly turned into separatist protests against the Indian central government -- a day after authorities slapped a curfew on much of the restive Himalayan region.
The deaths are a huge challenge for the Congress-led government, which has been criticized for failing to treat the protests seriously, underscoring a policy limbo in New Delhi that may spill over into tension with Pakistan, which claims Kashmir.
The crowds massed in Budgam and Tangmarg areas chanting slogans denouncing the United States. They set fire to government buildings and a school owned by a Protestant church, witnesses and officials said.
At least 75 people were injured, 12 of them by bullet wounds, police said.
Kashmir has seen mass rallies against Indian rule in the last three months and at least 70 protesters have been killed by police. Demonstrations on other issues -- such as the Koran -- can often balloon into wider anti-government sentiment.

On Sunday, two people were killed in a third straight day of violent protests in Afghanistan sparked by a U.S. pastor's threat to burn copies of the Koran.
While pastor Terry Jones dropped his plans, there were at least two incidents of abuse of the Koran in Lower Manhattan in New York on Saturday. Two evangelical preachers not affiliated with any mainstream church burned two copies of the Koran in Tennessee.

It was unclear which incidents the Kashmiri demonstrators were denouncing. Iranian TV reports were aired in Kashmir on Sunday about alleged desecrations of the Koran - a grave insult to Muslims who believe the Koran to be the literal word of God.

A Northeastern University lab tech’s suspected suicide by cyanide -- 30 miles away from campus -- is raising public safety fears over easy access to deadly chemicals days after the ninth anniversary of 9/11.

The 30-year-old NU lab tech -- identified by the school as Emily Staupe -- was found dead early yesterday morning in her Milford bedroom along with what initial tests show was a plastic bag filled with crystallized cyanide, according to Milford and state police.

Neil Livingstone, a Washington, D.C., terrorism expert, said Staupe’s apparent method of suicide shines a light on the problem of lax security at universities across the country.

"This should be a wake-up call," said Livingstone, president of ExecutiveAction. "What if her name were Mohammed Atta (a leader of the 9/11 plot) instead?
"If she’d been a bad guy and gotten hold of a significant amount of cyanide...who knows?" Livingstone said. "Cyanide is a good weapon of assassination or for killing a small number of people."

David Procopio, a spokesman for the state police, which is probing Staupe’s death, said it’s unclear how Staupe got the cyanide to Milford.

 San Bruno -- A state regulator on Sunday ordered Pacific Gas and Electric Co. to check for leaks in all of its thousands of miles of natural gas pipelines, an effort to protect the public as federal investigators step up their probe into why a pipe in San Bruno ruptured and touched off a deadly blast.

The California Public Utilities Commission said it would direct PG&E to focus on high-pressure pipelines in heavily populated areas like the San Bruno neighborhood that erupted in flames on Thursday evening. The agency also told PG&E to detail how much it has spent to replace pipelines and ensure their safety since 2005.

Ozeki Kotomitsuki, who has been sacked for his involvement in illegal baseball gambling, has filed a provisional injunction with a court, demanding that his dismissal be nullified.
In his petition filed on Sept. 13, Kotomitsuki, 34, also asked the Tokyo District Court to order the Japan Sumo Association (JSA) to reinstate him and pay his wages.
"His dismissal was unreasonably severe compared with the punitive measures against other wrestlers. We don't understand why the association took such a stance against him," his lawyer said in the petition.
JSA Chairman Hanaregoma declined to comment on the petition, saying, "We've left the matter to our lawyer."
The JSA fired Kotomitsuki on July 4 for his involvement in an illegal baseball gambling scandal that rocked the sumo world.
