Al Qaeda No. 2 speaks on Gaza flotilla incident

Ayman al-Zawahiri, said Turkish leaders should "stop recognizing Israel."

(CNN) -- In an audio message released Sunday, a speaker identified as al Qaeda's second-in-command offers condolences to the Turkish people on the loss of nine activists in a May 31 Israeli raid on an aid flotilla headed for Gaza.

The incident badly frayed Israel's once-close relationship with Turkey. 

The speaker, who was identified as Ayman al-Zawahiri, said in the message the incident underscores the need for Turkey to stop cooperating with or recognizing Israel.

"Change will come when the Turkish people demand that their government ceases all aspects of cooperation with Israel and stop recognizing Israel and when they ask their government to stop sending their (Turkish) armed forces to fight the Muslims in Afghanistan and end their battle against Islam and the Sharia," al-Zawahiri said.

The message is identified as being a production of As-Sahab production, a company typically handles al Qaeda communications. Although CNN cannot independently authenticate the audio message, it appeared on various radical Islamist websites known for posting similiar statements, messsages and recruitment videos by al Qaeda figures.

In the message, titled "A Message to the Turkish Muslim people," the speaker said the blockade of Gaza by Israel "is another form of the criminal acts waged against the Muslim world by the Crusader Zionist alliance."

"We must change this disgusting reality that we live in," he said. "This will not take place by sending (a) few relief aid ships or starting one demonstration or another."

"The Turkish people need to restore the glorious role of the Ottoman Empire when they used to defend every Muslim land from all outsiders," he said. "The role of the Turkish Muslim people cannot be minimized into an aid ship or two that are being sent to Gaza."

Israel has maintained its troops used force on the activists after they were attacked by those on board one boat in the flotilla, the Mavi Marmara. Soldiers were attacked with knives, metal poles and other objects, Israeli officials have said. But passengers on board the boat insist Israeli troops fired on them without provocation.

In the Sunday message, the speaker said Turkey condemns the "Israeli crimes against our Muslim brothers in Gaza, but still they commit the exact crimes against the Muslims in Afghanistan ... The Turkish people must stand up and be responsible for their government's action in recognizing those who violated and stole the land in Palestine and end the collaboration with the crusaders in killing Muslims in Afghanistan."

The last message purporting to be from al-Zawahiri was on July 27, when he mourned the loss of al Qaeda senior commander Sheikh Mustafa Abu Yazid, killed along with family members. He also called on Muslims to unite behind al Qaeda and wage jihad against their governments if they want change.

Pilgrims evacuated after bomb threat at Lourdes

PARIS — Authorities at the French pilgrimage site at Lourdes say some 30,000 people have been evacuated after a bomb threat on the Catholic holy day of Assumption.
Sanctuary spokesman Pierre Adias says Lourdes police received a threat saying a bomb would hit the site Sunday afternoon.
Some 30,000 people were evacuated from the site just before the midday Mass, and explosives experts are scouring the area.
The Aug. 15 holiday sees a particularly large influx of pilgrims at Lourdes, reputed for its healing powers. Many pilgrims are sick or disabled.
Assumption marks the heavenly assumption of the Virgin Mary.

Der Tagesspiegel φιλοξενεί ανταπόκριση της Susanne Güsten με τίτλο «Οι Ορθόδοξοι Χριστιανοί ανησυχούν για τον κίνδυνο βίας στη Θεία Λειτουργία της Κοίμησης της Θεοτόκου», στην οποία σημειώνεται ότι περιοχή της Αν. Τραπεζούντας βρίσκεται σε κατάσταση ετοιμότητας, καθώς η Θεία Λειτουργία στην ιστορική Μονή Παναγίας Σουμελά προκαλεί διαμαρτυρίες και θεωρίες συνομωσίας στους κόλπους Τούρκων εθνικιστών.

«H σύμπτωση είναι ότι η περιοχή γύρω από την Τραπεζούντα δεν αποτελεί μόνο παμπάλαια χριστιανική περιοχή της Ανατολίας αλλά σήμερα συνιστά προπύργιο ακραίων Τούρκων εθνικιστών, επισημαίνει. 

Οι φερόμενοι ως δολοφόνοι του αρμενικής καταγωγής Τούρκου συγγραφέα Hrant Dink κατάγονται από την Τραπεζούντα και εδώ σκοτώθηκε από πυροβολισμό προ τεσσάρων ετών ο καθολικός ιερέας Andrea Santoro. Κανείς δεν έχει κάτι ενάντια στους τουρίστες, δήλωσε ο βουλευτής Süleyman Latif Yunusoglou από την Τραπεζούντα, αλλά το να γίνει Θεία Λειτουργία είναι κάτι διαφορετικό».

Η εφημερίδα παραθέτει σύντομο ιστορικό σχετικά με τη Μονή Παναγίας Σουμελά, σημειώνοντας ότι «κατά τη δεκαετία του 1920 οι πολυπληθέστεροι Έλληνες έπρεπε να εγκαταλείψουν την περιοχή. Με ανταλλαγή πληθυσμών Τουρκία και Ελλάδα ήθελαν τότε να διαμορφώσουν ξεκάθαρες «εθνικές συνθήκες». 

Η εικόνα της Θεοτόκου μεταφέρθηκε στην Ελλάδα, η Μονή ανακηρύχθηκε Μουσείο και έκτοτε δε διεξάγοντο πλέον εκεί Θείες Λειτουργίες». «Η τουρκική κυβέρνηση προσπαθεί εδώ και κάποιο καιρό να προσεγγίσει με πολιτικές χειρονομίες τους χριστιανούς. Οι αρμένιοι χριστιανοί θα επιτρέπεται προσεχώς να διεξάγουν Θεία Λειτουργία στην παλαιά Μονή στο νησί Akdamar στη λίμνη Βαν στα νότια της Ανατολίας» γράφει η δημοσιογράφος.

Ο Οικουμενικός Πατριάρχης Βαρθολομαίος δήλωσε ότι οι Χριστιανοί φτάνουν στη Μονή Παναγίας Σουμελά ως «κήρυκες ειρήνης», σημειώνοντας ότι είναι βέβαιος ότι οι μουσουλμάνοι στην Τραπεζούντα έχουν κατανόηση για τη χριστιανική λατρεία προς τη Θεοτόκο. «Μεταξύ των εθνικιστών στην Τραπεζούντα δε διαφαίνεται ιδιαίτερα αυτός ο θρησκευτικός σεβασμός. 

Αυτοί δε θέλουν καθόλου να γίνει Θεία Λειτουργία, και μάλιστα σε καμία περίπτωση στις 15 Αυγούστου», γράφει η εφημερίδα, σημειώνοντας ότι «σύμφωνα με το βουλευτή Yunusoglou, έχει μεγάλη σημασία το γεγονός ότι η Θεία Λειτουργία αναμένεται να γίνει ειδικά την ημέρα της επετείου της οθωμανικής κατάκτησης της άλλοτε βυζαντινής Τραπεζούντας, η οποία πραγματοποιήθηκε στις 15 Αυγούστου 1461. 

Η εφημερίδα Yunicag παρέπεμψε επίσης στο ότι 15 Αυγούστου ξεκίνησε και ο ένοπλος αγώνας των Κούρδων ανταρτών του ΡΚΚ. Όλα αυτά καθιστούν τη Θεία Λειτουργία συλλαλητήριο- ’εκδίκηση’».

«Πίσω από αυτές τις θεωρίες συνομωσίας κρύβεται η βαθιά ανασφάλεια πολλών Τούρκων εθνικιστών, οι οποίοι βλέπουν την ενότητα της χώρας τους να εκτίθεται σε διαρκείς επιθέσεις σκοτεινών δυνάμεων, στις οποίες συγκαταλέγουν και τους Χριστιανούς» γράφει η Güsten, σημειώνοντας ότι η αστυνομία στην Τραπεζούντα θέλει να εμποδίσει την παρενόχληση της Θείας Λειτουργίας και τετραπλασίασε τον αριθμό των ενστόλων στους δρόμους της πόλης, σύμφωνα με τις εφημερίδες. 

Όπως αναφέρει επίσης η Güsten, υπάλληλοι της αντιτρομοκρατικής υπηρεσίας ανέκριναν έναν τοπικό πολιτικό και τρεις ακόμη υπόπτους, οι οποίοι είχαν καλέσει μέσω του Facebook σε δράση κατά των Χριστιανών με το σλόγκαν «Σταματήστε τη Θεία Λειτουργία στις 15 Αυγούστου».

Lebanon's defence minister says the country has opened a bank account to receive donations to buy weapons for its poorly-equipped army.

The defence minister, Elias Murr, said he and his father, former defence minister Michel Murr, had deposited $670,000 (£430,000) to start the fund.

It comes after US legislators blocked $100m of military aid over concerns it might be used against Israel.

Four people were killed in a clash on the Israel-Lebanon border on 3 August.

Announcing the new bank account, Mr Murr said he hoped both Lebanese at home and living abroad would donate.

The US has provided Lebanon with $720m in military aid since 2006 and the Department of State has said military co-operation with Lebanon will continue.

Despite the US help, Lebanon's 60,000-strong military is considered ill-equipped.

Conditions rejected

Last week, the chairman of the US House Foreign Affairs Committee, Howard Berman, said he had used his legislative prerogative to suspend assistance to the Lebanese armed forces on 2 August.

He said there were concerns in Congress over the influence of Lebanon's Shia Islamist Hezbollah movement over the army and that weapons bought with the aid might be turned on Israel.

Mr Berman also said the border clash - which resulted in the deaths of two Lebanese soldiers, a Lebanese journalist and a senior Israeli army officer - had only reinforced his decision.

Mr Murr said the US aid would be rejected if it came with "the condition that it does not protect its territory, people and border".

Iran and Syria, supporters of Hezbollah, have since reaffirmed their support for the Lebanese army.
