The Hellenic Navy (HN) (Greek: Πολεμικό Ναυτικό, Polemikó Naftikó, abbreviated ΠΝ) is the naval force of Greece, part of the Greek Armed Forces. The modern Greek navy has its roots in the naval forces of various Aegean Islands, which fought in the Greek War of Independence. During the periods of monarchy (1833–1924 and 1936–1973) it was known as the Royal Navy (Βασιλικόν Ναυτικόν, Vasilikón Naftikón, abbreviated ΒΝ).The total displacement of all the navy's vessels is approximately 150,000 tons. The motto of the Hellenic Navy is "Μέγα το της Θαλάσσης Κράτος" from Thucydides' account of Pericles' oration on the eve of the Peloponnesian War. This has been roughly translated as "Great is the country that controls the sea". The Hellenic Navy's emblem consists of an anchor in front of a crossed Christian cross and trident, with the cross symbolizing Greek Orthodoxy, and the trident symbolizing Poseidon, the god of the sea in Greek mythology. Pericles' words are written across the top of the emblem. "The navy, as it represents a necessary weapon for Greece, should only be created for war and aim to victory."...............The Hellenic Merchant Marine refers to the Merchant Marine of Greece, engaged in commerce and transportation of goods and services universally. It consists of the merchant vessels owned by Greek civilians, flying either the Greek flag or a flag of convenience. Greece is a maritime nation by tradition, as shipping is arguably the oldest form of occupation of the Greeks and a key element of Greek economic activity since the ancient times. Nowadays, Greece has the largest merchant fleet in the world, which is the second largest contributor to the national economy after tourism and forms the backbone of world shipping. The Greek fleet flies a variety of flags, however some Greek shipowners gradually return to Greece following the changes to the legislative framework governing their operations and the improvement of infrastructure.Blogger Tips and Tricks

David Cameron acts to head off snap election challenge of Tory Right

David Cameron
Holding out: David Cameron is said to be looking for grassroots allies amid fears Right-wingers would press him to drop his modernising crusade and liberal policies

The London Standard Evening,.July 15th 2010.,

David Cameron is mobilising grassroots Tories to prevent a lurch to the Right and to protect his coalition with the Liberal Democrats, the Standard can reveal. The Prime Minister fears that traditional Conservatives will use an analysis of the general election to conclude that more hardline policies would deliver the “one more push” needed for a majority government.

Before a potentially fractious party conference this autumn, Mr Cameron has told defeated Parliamentary candidates that he needs them to fight back against any push by the Right.
Some in the party have already begun discussing the possibility of a snap election to capitalise on the Tories' current poll lead and the Lib-Dems' sharp fall in support.

A new YouGov/Sun poll today put the Conservatives on 43 per cent, Labour on 34 and the Lib-Dems on 15 per cent. One senior Right-winger, Tim Montgomerie of ConservativeHome.com, suggested: “What chance a snap election now to dump the Libs?”

Some veteran MPs also think that a snap poll is worth considering in a bid to capitalise on Labour disarray and the unpopularity of Nick Clegg's party among his supporters.

But Mr Cameron is determined to hold out against such pressure. He set out his own plans as he met 100 defeated Tory candidates at Downing Street for a secret meeting yesterday.
Many of the candidates are deemed to be on the “moderate” and “modernising” wing of the party.

One source said that the Prime Minister revealed that he was looking for grassroots allies because he feared the Right would use an election review to say the party has to dump its more liberal policies.

“He was worried that the examination of the election will conclude that all we needed was one last push. He wants candidates to help fight that,” one candidate said.

Another said that Mr Cameron had made clear that now was not the time to abandon his modernising crusade.

Graham Brady, chairman of the backbench 1922 Committee, is conducting his own independent review of the election campaign.

Deputy chairman Lord Ashcroft, who on election night criticised the decision to give Nick Clegg equal billing in the TV debates, is also set to publish a book analysing the campaign. ConservativeHome has already concluded that the TV debate blunder, failure to talk more about immigration and welfare, the U-turn on an EU referendum, the vague Big Society policy and lack of a consistent message on the economy all contributed to the party's failure to win an outright majority.

The Tory grassroots website has been scathing about the fact Mr Cameron added just three per cent to his party's vote and his Alternative Vote referendum plans. A senior government source said that Mr Cameron acknowledged yesterday that there was a “hard core” of opponents to the coalition on both sides but he stressed that the public “really like” the new politics.

A spokeswoman for the Prime Minister said that the defeated candidates' event was part of his “open door” policy for the party. Every Tory MP and much of the voluntary party has been invited to No 10 since the election.

“He said that if we can build a strong and stable coalition then in five years' time we can hold our heads up high about what we have achieved for the country,” she said. Downing Street sources said there was “no mood whatsoever” for a snap poll.

Russia up to date on Iranian nuclear developments - Medvedev

TREND ///, 15.07.2010 16:02
Russia possesses information indicating that Iran is continuing to develop its nuclear technology, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said on Thursday.

"The information that is being received comes both from open sources and from special services that deliver relevant reports and shows that these [nuclear] programs are being developed," Medvedev said during a joint news conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in the Russian Urals city of Yekaterinburg,
RIA Novosti reported.

"Iran should have enough courage to begin full-fledged cooperation with the international community, even if it does not like some questions that are being asked," the Russian president went on.

International pressure on Iran increased in early February when Tehran announced it had begun enriching uranium to 20%, ignoring a proposed swap agreement that would provide it with fuel for a research reactor.

Westerns powers suspect Iran of attempting to build nuclear weapons under the guise of civilian nuclear generation.

On June 9, the UN Security Council passed a resolution imposing a fourth set of sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program, including tougher financial controls and an expanded arms embargo.

During a meeting in Moscow on Wednesday, the Russian and Iranian energy ministers, Sergei Shmatko and Masud Mir-Kazemi, pledged that the sanctions would not affect Russian-Iranian cooperation.

The ministers approved a "roadmap" for oil and gas projects, including a possibility of establishing a joint bank to finance those projects and work out mechanisms to use national currencies. Shmatko said Russian companies were ready to supply oil products to Iran.

Medvedev said on Thursday that Iran was an "active" trade partner.

"This, however, does not mean that we are indifferent to how Iran is developing its nuclear program, as well as... how military components of the program look like," the president said, adding that Russia was expecting "relevant explanations from Iran."

Russia, a permanent member of the UN Security Council, has long opposed sanctions against the Islamic Republic, saying that the issue should be resolved through diplomatic means. However, Moscow finally approved the sanctions after Iran failed to prove the peaceful nature of its nuclear activities.

Medvedev said Iran's nuclear program was "an issue of national pride for Iranians," which, however, was also being "actively exploited by Iranian authorities in order to achieve their own political goals."

MOSCOW, July 13 (RIA Novosti)
The Russian Air Force will receive more than 60 fifth-generation fighters from 2015-16, the force commander said on Tuesday.
"The Air Force will start taking delivery [of fifth-generation fighters] in 2015-16. The preliminary number is over 60," Col. Gen. Alexander Zelin said.
He also said the first batch of new fighters would be provided with older, "non-fifth" generation engines.

In mid-June Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin observed the 16th test flight of a prototype fighter.
Deputy Defense Minister for Arms Procurement Vladimir Popovkin said the Defense Ministry would purchase the first 6 to 10 aircraft after 2012, based on the outcome of initial tests. He said the fighter will be superior to similar U.S. models.

The prime minister said 30 billion rubles (around $1 billion) had already been spent on the project and another 30 billion would be required to complete it, after which the engine, weaponry and other components would be upgraded.

He said the fighter would have a service life of 30-35 years, if modernization and upgrades are factored in, and would be around three times cheaper than its foreign analogs

Russia's only known fifth-generation project is Sukhoi's PAK FA and the current prototype is the T-50. It is designed to compete with the U.S. F-22 Raptor, so far the world's only fifth-generation fighter, and the F-35 Lightning II.

Russia has been developing its newest fighter since the 1990s. The country's top military officials have said the stealth fighter jet with a range of up to 5,500 km should enter service with the Air Force in 2015.
The PAK FA is to be armed with next-generation air-to-air, air-to-surface, and air-to-ship missiles, and has two 30-mm cannons.

London MPs: Tube upgrade is worth £66bn to economy

Pippa Crerar, City Hall Editor

George Osborne came under pressure to safeguard investment in the Tube today after a cross-party group of London MPs warned it was critical to the economy.

The MPs, representing seats across the capital, signed an Early Day Motion urging the Chancellor to recognise £66 billion of economic benefits modernisation would bring.

The MPs stressed the “absolute dependence” of commuters on the largely pre-war Tube network.
Transport Secretary Philip Hammond is preparing to submit proposals for cuts to the Treasury tomorrow — two weeks ahead of deadline — for the summer-long spending review.

Crucial upgrades to the network could be in danger if Mr Osborne takes 25 to 40 per cent from the transport budget. Sources said he will not downsize the £16 billion Crossrail project, but MPs and business leaders fear this leaves Tube upgrades exposed. Tory MP Mark Field, Labour MP David Lammy and Lib-Dem MP Tom Brake today tabled the motion urging the Chancellor to protect the Underground for the sake of the economy.

The number of signatories is expected to soar as MPs from the capital and across the country add their names.

It reads: “That this House notes the vital role of London as a gateway to investment from overseas into the UK, the absolute dependence of employers and employees on the largely pre-war Tube network, which, having been starved of investment for decades, is part way through a critical upgrade.

And that the economic returns of an upgraded Tube (alongside Crossrail) are estimated at £66 billion; asserts that in this period of great pressure on the public finances that spending should be prioritised according to such returns; and urges the Government to maintain the investment in this vital infrastructure in order to support UK economic growth.

Bulgaria: ex-PM charged with mishandling documents..[ 1464 ]

Bulgaria ex-PM charged over missing state secrets

Sergei Stanishev talks to reporters outside the National
Investigative Service in Sofia - 14 July 2010
Mr Stanishev was Bulgarian prime minister from 2005-09

Bulgaria's former Prime Minister, Sergei Stanishev, has been charged with mishandling classified documents.
Prosecutors say he failed to return seven documents containing state secrets on security and organised crime after losing last year's election.

Mr Stanishev, who is now leader of the opposition Socialists, has denied any wrongdoing.
Bulgaria is under EU pressure to show progress in fighting corruption and organised crime.
Mr Stanishev faces up to two years in prison if he is found guilty.
He said the charges were politically motivated.

The documents had been prepared by the National Security Agency, the interior ministry, the defence ministry, Nato and contained state secrets, the prosecutors said.
In 2008 the European Commission suspended about 500m euros-worth of EU aid to Bulgaria because of concerns about corruption and organised crime.

The EU is to assess Bulgaria's progress on these fronts this month. If it is not satisfied, Sofia stands to lose access to some of 11bn euros ($14bn; £9.2bn) in EU aid.
