DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) 10/4/2010 — A U.S. warship captured six suspected pirates Saturday after a battle off the Horn of Africa — the Navy's third direct encounter with seafaring bandits in less than two weeks.

The Navy has taken at least 21 suspected pirates since March 31 in the violence-plagued waters off Somalia and nearby regions, where U.S. warships are part of an international anti-piracy flotilla.

A statement by the U.S. Navy said the suspected pirates began shooting at the amphibious dock landing ship USS Ashland just before dawn about 380 miles (610 kilometers) off Djibouti, a small nation facing Yemen across the mouth of the Red Sea.

The Navy said the Ashland returned fire and the suspected pirate skiff was destroyed. All six people on board were rescued and taken aboard the Ashland.

The Ashland suffered no injuries or damage in the second recent attack on a U.S. warship by suspected pirates.

On March 31, the frigate USS Nicholas exchanged fire with a suspected pirate vessel west of the Seychelles, sinking their skiff and confiscating a mother ship. Five suspected pirates were captured.

On Monday, the destroyer USS McFaul responded to the distress call from a merchant vessel and captured 10 other suspected pirates.

The Navy said it was reviewing "multiple options" on the suspects' fates.

Some suspected pirates have been turned over to Kenya for trial, but there has been some reluctance by African nations to become a center for prosecutions. In December, the Dutch government released 13 suspected Somali pirates after the European Union failed to find a country willing to prosecute them.

One of the suspected pirates accused of attacking the U.S.-flagged merchant ship Maersk Alabama last year is facing trial in the United States.

At the United Nations, Russia has introduced a draft resolution to the U.N. Security Council that calls for strengthening the international legal system to ensure captured Somali pirates do not escape punishment.

In Turkey, a news agency reported Saturday that Somali pirates have abandoned a commandeered Turkish ship.

The Dogan agency quoted Fatih Kabal, an official of Bergen Shipping based in Istanbul, as saying the pirates left the MV Yasin C, which was seized Wednesday 250 miles (400 kilometers) off the Kenyan coast.

Kabal said the crew had locked themselves in the engine room and realized that the pirates had left the ship on Friday. He said crew members, who were unharmed, took the damaged ship to the Kenyan port of Mombasa.

Somali pirates have been known to give up on ships they believe have no ransom value, such as vessels owned or hired by Somali traders.

Meanwhile, the owner of a hijacked supertanker has begun negotiations for the ship's release, a South Korean Foreign Ministry official said on condition of anonymity, citing the sensitivity of the talks. Repeated calls to the vessel operator, South Korea-based Samho Shipping, seeking comment went unanswered on Saturday night. The vessel is owned by a Singaporean company.

A South Korean naval destroyer that had been monitoring the ship began sailing away from the pirates Saturday and heading back toward the Gulf of Aden after the pirates warned the sailors not to come any closer.

Authorities say Somali pirates hijacked the 300,000-ton Samho Dream in the Indian Ocean on April 4. The ship was transporting crude oil worth about $160 million from Iraq to the U.S. with a crew of 24 South Koreans and Filipinos.

More than a dozen ships and their crew are believed to be currently held by pirates off the lawless coast of Somalia.

BANGKOK (Reuters) - A Reuters television cameraman was shot dead on Saturday during a violent clash between Thai troops and anti-government protesters in Bangkok that killed 12 people.

Hiro Muramoto, a 43-year-old Japanese national, was shot in the chest and arrived at Klang Hospital without a pulse, hospital Director Dr Pichaya Nakwatchara said.

Muramoto, who had worked for Reuters in Tokyo for more than 15 years, was married with two children.

"I am dreadfully saddened to have lost our colleague Hiro Muramoto in the Bangkok clashes," said Reuters Editor-in-Chief David Schlesinger.

"Journalism can be a terribly dangerous profession as those who try to tell the world the story thrust themselves in the center of the action. The entire Reuters family will mourn this tragedy."

Muramoto had been covering fighting between troops and protesters in the Rajdumnoen Road area where soldiers opened fire with rubber bullets and tear gas, as well as live rounds into the air, in Bangkok's worst political violence in 18 years.

The hospital director said the bullet had exited his back. He did not know what kind of bullet it was.

An army spokesman said protesters were armed with guns and had been throwing petrol bombs and grenades at troops.

Twelve people, including three soldiers, were killed and more than 500 people wounded in the fighting near the Phan Fah bridge and Rajdumnoen Road in Bangkok's old quarter, a protest base near government buildings and the regional U.N. headquarters.

Εξελίξεις προέκυψαν στο θέμα των ερευνών γύρω από την τρομοκρατία μετά την προσαγωγή νωρίς το πρωί του Σαββάτου στην Αντιτρομοκρατική τεσσάρων ατόμων, εκ των οποίων η μία γυναίκα. Κατά πληροφορίες οι προσαχθέντες ενδέχεται να συνδέονται με τον Επαναστατικό Αγώνα. Σε πλήρη εξέλιξη βρίσκονται οι έρευνες. Προκηρύξεις που παραπέμπουν στον Επαναστατικό Αγώνα βρέθηκαν κατά την έφοδο της Αντιτρομοκρατικής σε διαμέρισμα στη Νέα Ιωνία· στις έρευνες της Αντιτρομοκρατικής σε σπίτια κατασχέθηκαν και υλικά κατασκευής εκρηκτικών μηχανισμών, ενώ από τις υπάρχουσες πληροφορίες δεν προκύπτει ότι εντοπίστηκαν όπλα. Τα τέσσερα άτομα που ανήκουν στον αντιεξουσιαστικό χώρο ανακρίνονται στην Αντιτρομοκρατική Υπηρεσία παρουσία εισαγγελέα, ενώ οι αστυνομικοί αναζητούν στην Αττική και κάποια οχήματα για τα οποία έχουν στοιχεία ότι ίσως επρόκειτο να χρησιμοποιηθούν από τους συλληφθέντες. Κατά πληροφορίες η επιχείρηση της Αντιτρομοκρατικής ξεκίνησε πριν από τρεις ημέρες με μεγάλη μυστικότητα και παραμένει σε πλήρη εξέλιξη με κατ' οίκον έρευνες και έρευνες σε διαφορετικές περιοχές της Αττικής για πιθανούς συνεργούς. Οι προσαχθέντες, άτομα του αντιεξουσιαστικού χώρου, έχουν απασχολήσει την Αστυνομία και στο παρελθόν. Ένας εξ αυτών φέρεται να είχε συλληφθεί και πριν από δέκα χρόνια. Η άκρη του νήματος για την προσαγωγή τους θεωρείται ότι βρέθηκε μετά την αιματηρή συμπλοκή στη Δάφνη κατά την οποία έπεσε νεκρός ο 35χρονος Λάμπρος Φούντας. Στις έρευνες της Αντιτρομοκρατικής σε κατοικία στη Νέα Ιωνία εντοπίστηκαν προκηρύξεις του Επαναστατικού Αγώνα. Οι αστυνομικοί έφθασαν σε μία παλιά μονοκατοικία στην περιοχή στις τέσσερις τα ξημερώματα του Σαββάτου και παρέμειναν εκεί έως τις τρεις το μεσημέρι. Δημοσιογραφικές πληροφορίες αναφέρουν ότι οι έρευνες της Αντιτρομοκρατικής στράφηκαν επίσης γύρω από έναν μεσήλικα άνδρα, που χαρακτηρίζεται ως διανοούμενος, και φέρεται να διαμένει στα προσφυγικά της Νέας Φιλαδέλφειας. Δεν έχει γίνει γνωστό εάν το συγκεκριμένο πρόσωπο είναι μεταξύ των προσαχθέντων ή εάν η αστυνομία τον ψάχνει ακόμη, μεταδίδει σχετικά το Mega. Σύμφωνα με όσα έχουν γίνει μέχρι στιγμής γνωστά έρευνες πραγματοποιήθηκαν και στα Καλύβια και σε άλλα δύο σημεία στην Αττική, ενώ η επιχείρηση συνεχίζεται. Σε επιφυλακή βρίσκονται αστυνομικοί σε διάφορες περιοχές της χώρες σε περίπτωση που χρειαστούν να συμβάλουν στις έρευνες για τον εντοπισμό συνεργών των προσαχθέντων. Υπενθυμίζεται ότι την Παρασκευή ο υπουργός Προστασίας του Πολίτη Μιχάλης Χρυσοχοΐδης επισκέφθηκε στο Μέγαρο Μαξίμου τον πρωθυπουργό Γιώργο Παπανδρέου. Ειδικοί σε θέματα δημόσιας τάξης δεν αποκλείουν το ενδεχόμενο να ενημερώθηκε σχετικά με τις έρευνες ο πρωθυπουργός. * «Κάθε θετική εξέλιξη στον αγώνα κατά της τρομοκρατίας, δεν μπορεί παρά να έχει την καθολική συμπαράσταση του πολιτικού κόσμου και της ελληνικής κοινωνίας» δήλωσε ο αρμόδιος τομεάρχης της Νέας Δημοκρατίας, Νικόλαος Δένδιας, σχετικά με τις ανακοινώσεις που έγιναν από τη ΓΑΔΑ για την υπόθεση. Από τον ΛΑΟΣ επισημάνθηκε ότι «είναι ευκαιρία να βγουν όλα στην επιφάνεια. Φυσικοί, ηθικοί και παράπλευροι αυτουργοί της τρομοκρατίας. Ελπίζουμε ότι αυτή τη φορά ο κ. The deaths of the Polish president, army chief of staff, national bank president, deputy foreign minister and some of the country's highest military and civilian leaders in a tragic plane crash have changed the political landscape of Poland.

President Lech Kaczynski was leading a delegation of 88 people on Saturday to an event marking the 70th anniversary of the massacre of thousands of Polish officers by Soviet secret police, when their plane went down in Russia.

A government spokesman told Reuters on Saturday that a presidential election was to be scheduled to find a replacement for Kaczynski, as the Polish government was scheduled to hold an emergency meeting in Warsaw early Saturday afternoon. The Polish constitution says the election date must be announced within two weeks and the election must take place within two months of the announcement.

Bronislaw Komorowski, head of the Polish lower house, is expected to take over presidential duties. His office announced he was on his way to Warsaw Saturday.

Komorowski, a 57-year-old former anti-communist dissident from an aristocratic family, was the official candidate of the liberal Civic Platform (PO). Opinion polls had suggested Komorowski, Prime Minister Donald Tusk's centrist candidate, may have won the next presidential race against Kaczynski.

Polish President Lech Kaczynski and some of the country's highest military, civilian leaders are among 96 killed after plane crashes while landing in Russia.

During Kaczynski's presidency, he pursued a strongly pro-U.S. foreign policy, in accordance with a cross-party consensus that has grown in Poland since the fall of communism. He was an enthusiastic backer of plans to build a U.S. missile defense facility in the country, the largest of the European Union's new eastern members.

Poland's former president, Lech Walesa, said the death of Kaczynski and the other passengers on the plane was "an inconceivable tragedy."

"Jesus, Holy Mary, it's an inconceivable tragedy, an inconceivable disaster," he cried after learning Kaczynski died during the crash.

Jacek Wasilewski of the Warsaw's Higher School of Social Psychology said the president's death will "have a huge impact on the elections."

"The political consequences will be long term and possibly will change the entire future landscape of Polish politics," Wasilewski told Reuters.
