The Hellenic Navy (HN) (Greek: Πολεμικό Ναυτικό, Polemikó Naftikó, abbreviated ΠΝ) is the naval force of Greece, part of the Greek Armed Forces. The modern Greek navy has its roots in the naval forces of various Aegean Islands, which fought in the Greek War of Independence. During the periods of monarchy (1833–1924 and 1936–1973) it was known as the Royal Navy (Βασιλικόν Ναυτικόν, Vasilikón Naftikón, abbreviated ΒΝ).The total displacement of all the navy's vessels is approximately 150,000 tons. The motto of the Hellenic Navy is "Μέγα το της Θαλάσσης Κράτος" from Thucydides' account of Pericles' oration on the eve of the Peloponnesian War. This has been roughly translated as "Great is the country that controls the sea". The Hellenic Navy's emblem consists of an anchor in front of a crossed Christian cross and trident, with the cross symbolizing Greek Orthodoxy, and the trident symbolizing Poseidon, the god of the sea in Greek mythology. Pericles' words are written across the top of the emblem. "The navy, as it represents a necessary weapon for Greece, should only be created for war and aim to victory."...............The Hellenic Merchant Marine refers to the Merchant Marine of Greece, engaged in commerce and transportation of goods and services universally. It consists of the merchant vessels owned by Greek civilians, flying either the Greek flag or a flag of convenience. Greece is a maritime nation by tradition, as shipping is arguably the oldest form of occupation of the Greeks and a key element of Greek economic activity since the ancient times. Nowadays, Greece has the largest merchant fleet in the world, which is the second largest contributor to the national economy after tourism and forms the backbone of world shipping. The Greek fleet flies a variety of flags, however some Greek shipowners gradually return to Greece following the changes to the legislative framework governing their operations and the improvement of infrastructure.Blogger Tips and Tricks

Russian roulette wrong...[ 783 ]

Russian roulette wedding speech goes badly wrong as guest shoots himself

A Russian wedding has ended in tragedy after a game of Russian roulette went wrong, leaving one guest with a life-threatening gunshot wound to his head.

Russian roulette wedding speech goes wrong as guest shoots himself
The gunman, a 33 year-old Chechen man, insists he was sure that he had emptied the pistol's chamber

A home video of the wedding in Astrakhan, southern Russia, shows a grinning friend of the groom unexpectedly pulling a pistol from his waistband, putting it to his temple and squeezing the trigger. The gun emits only a clicking sound and the smiling gunman asks who else wants to try his luck.

Another guest is shown taking up the offer, but this time the trick goes wrong.

The second man pulls the trigger and immediately collapses to the floor as the gun releases a rubber bullet into his skull at point-blank range. He is now reported to be fighting for his life.

The gunman, a 33 year-old Chechen man, insists he was sure that he had emptied the pistol's chamber of every bullet and says he only wanted to enliven the wedding. But local police do not believe him and have opened a criminal investigation into the tragic incident.

Russian weddings are notoriously drunken and sometimes violent, with fist fights not uncommon.

The origins of Russian roulette are unclear, but it is thought to have started in the nineteenth century when sadistic Russian prison guards forced inmates to play and bet on the outcome.

The Red Arrows in Crete...[ 782 ]

Red Arrows planes collide in Crete

A pair of Red Arrows planes have collided in mid-air during a training exercise in Crete, according to reports.

One pilot is in hospital after ejecting from an aircraft while another member of the RAF aerobatic team landed safely, the Foreign Office said.

A Foreign Office spokeswoman said: ''We can confirm that an incident has occurred involving the Red Arrows whilst undertaking pre-season training at Hellenic Air Force Base, Kastelli, in Crete, and one pilot ejected and has been taken to hospital and the other one landed safely.''

The unit, which comprises 10 pilots, currently includes the first female to fly with the Red Arrows, Flt Lt Kirsty Moore, but officials could neither confirm nor deny if she was involved.

A spokesman said: "We can confirm that an incident has occurred involving the Red Arrows whilst undertaking pre-season training at Hellenic Air Force Base Kastelli in Crete.

"A service inquiry will be convened to identify the cause of the crash."

The spokesman was unable to provide details of the injured pilot's condition.

Police in Crete said he suffered a dislocated shoulder after parachuting from his aircraft before it crashed, according to reports.

The Red Arrows team arrived on the Greek island on Sunday for the first stage of Exercise Springhawk, the RAF said.

Ten Hawks and a C130 Hercules left Scampton in Lincolnshire on Saturday and travelled to Crete via France and Italy.

Putin ordered dismissal of officials [ 781 ]

Putin orders dismissal of officials over cost of building projects

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin demanded on Monday that the government prevent a further rise in spending on infrastructure projects and ordered the dismissal of the officials responsible for mounting expenses.

"The principles of the formation of pricing should lead not to a rise, but rather to a decline in costs and a reduction in budget expenditure," he said, referring to large-scale state construction projects in connection with the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi and the 2012 APEC summit in Vladivostok.

"This is particularly important when we have a budget deficit...and, in general, we cannot simply take risks with state funds," an exasperated Putin said at a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Kozak. "What is this all about?"

"The responsible people...should be dismissed immediately," Putin ordered. "This very day!"

Putin also expressed dissatisfaction with the fact that while salaries, supplies and energy prices are lower in Russia than in western Europe, construction costs are often higher.

"Several pricing principles were recently altered. But what is the result?" he went on. "The result is the opposite of our expectations! The prices have risen!"

"What is going on?" he asked.

Dubai case, the use of fake UK passports[ 780 ]

Britain expels Israeli diplomat over Dubai passport row

The UK is to expel an Israeli diplomat over the use of 12 cloned British passports in the Dubai murder of a Hamas leader, the BBC has learned.

BBC , 12:22 GMT, Tuesday, 23 March 2010

Foreign Secretary David Miliband will make a statement to Parliament later.

Israel has said there is no proof that its agents were behind the killing of Mahmoud al-Mabhouh in a Dubai hotel room in January.

(CNN) March 23, 2010 8:07 a.m. EDT

Mahmoud al-Mabhouh, a founding member of Hamas' military wing survived three other previous attempts on his life.

Diplomatic sources stressed the British government has stopped short of accusing Israel of the murder.

However Mr Miliband had demanded that Israel co-operate fully with the investigation into how the passports were obtained.

The foreign secretary is to make the statement after Britain's Serious Organised Crime Agency found proof of the cloned passports.

Strong message

Diplomatic sources stressed the British government was not accusing Israel of involvement in the killing.

In the land where they love to talk, Israeli officials are staying remarkably tight-lipped. At least until David Miliband speaks.

"It doesn't look good," was the terse verdict of one former senior diplomat, before he decided it would be better if he said no more. Other sources suggest that this is a "standard dance" the British have to go through. They expected that the UK would not want this to be an "ongoing irritant".

There is a clear Israeli desire to walk this argument down from one where it could damage the wider relationship.

As for the more general Israeli view, that is mixed. Many believe that there is a measure of slightly unconvincing righteous indignation from the countries whose nationals had their passports cloned. Those Israelis argue that Mahmoud al-Mabouh was as much an enemy of the west, as of Israel.

But there are a good number of Israelis who also believe this was a cack-handed operation, which blew the identities of 27 valuable agents, and caused an unnecessary diplomatic stink.

BBC Middle East editor Jeremy Bowen said the expulsion would send a "very clear message" of British disapproval.

"It is a very big step for a government like the British to expel one of the diplomats belonging to one of its important allies," he said.

The diplomat to be expelled will not be Israel's ambassador to London, Ron Prosor.

Last month Mr Miliband described the use of fake UK passports as an "outrage" and vowed that the inquiry would "get to the bottom" of the affair.

Twelve fake British passports were used in the murder of Mr Mabhouh - the founder of Hamas's military wing - in his hotel room in Dubai on 19 January.

Dubai officials said they are "99% certain" that agents from Israeli secret service Mossad were behind the killing but Israel has said there is no proof.

Other members of the hit squad travelled on fake Irish, French and Australian travel documents, Dubai police said.

Following his death, Mr Mabhouh's family said medical teams that examined him determined he had died after receiving a massive electric shock to the head. They also found evidence that he had been strangled.

Blood samples sent to a French laboratory confirmed he was killed by electric shock, after which the body was sent to Syria, they said.

Thousands of people attended Mr Mabhouh's funeral at the Yarmouk Palestinian refugee camp, on the outskirts of Damascus in January.

Warning against use of Firefox browser [ 779 ]

Germany warns against use of Firefox browser

BurgerCERT page
The Computer Emergency Response Team posted the warning

BBC,,16:44 GMT, Monday, 22 March 2010

The German government has issued a warning about using the Firefox browser because of security issues.

The Federal Office for Information Security made a similar ruling on the safety of Internet Explorer in January.

The office warned that the Firefox vulnerability, confirmed by Firefox makers, could allow hackers to run malicious programs on users' computers.

A new browser release at the end of the month will fix the bug which relates to the current version, Firefox 3.6.

A "beta" or test version of that release, Firefox 3.6.2, is already available but has not yet been fully tested.

The Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) has recommended that users stop using Firefox until the tested fix is released - in a move remarkably similar to the January announcement, in which France followed suit just days later.

Fox swap?

The Firefox vulnerability was confirmed by maker Mozilla last week on its security blog, when it promised that the next official release would address the issue.

It is only the current version that is affected, but given that prior releases have different vulnerabilities, reverting to an older version of the browser is ill-advised.

Switching to a different browser may not be a good solution either, said Graham Cluley, senior technologist at security firm Sophos.

"Switching your web browser willy-nilly as each new unpatched security hole is revealed could cause more problems than it's worth," he said.

"What are you going to do when your replacement browser itself turns out to contain a vulnerability?

"My advice is to only switch from Firefox if you really know what you are doing with the browser you're swapping to. If you stick with Firefox, apply the security update as soon as it's available."

Firefox was not immediately available for comment.
