The Hellenic Navy (HN) (Greek: Πολεμικό Ναυτικό, Polemikó Naftikó, abbreviated ΠΝ) is the naval force of Greece, part of the Greek Armed Forces. The modern Greek navy has its roots in the naval forces of various Aegean Islands, which fought in the Greek War of Independence. During the periods of monarchy (1833–1924 and 1936–1973) it was known as the Royal Navy (Βασιλικόν Ναυτικόν, Vasilikón Naftikón, abbreviated ΒΝ).The total displacement of all the navy's vessels is approximately 150,000 tons. The motto of the Hellenic Navy is "Μέγα το της Θαλάσσης Κράτος" from Thucydides' account of Pericles' oration on the eve of the Peloponnesian War. This has been roughly translated as "Great is the country that controls the sea". The Hellenic Navy's emblem consists of an anchor in front of a crossed Christian cross and trident, with the cross symbolizing Greek Orthodoxy, and the trident symbolizing Poseidon, the god of the sea in Greek mythology. Pericles' words are written across the top of the emblem. "The navy, as it represents a necessary weapon for Greece, should only be created for war and aim to victory."...............The Hellenic Merchant Marine refers to the Merchant Marine of Greece, engaged in commerce and transportation of goods and services universally. It consists of the merchant vessels owned by Greek civilians, flying either the Greek flag or a flag of convenience. Greece is a maritime nation by tradition, as shipping is arguably the oldest form of occupation of the Greeks and a key element of Greek economic activity since the ancient times. Nowadays, Greece has the largest merchant fleet in the world, which is the second largest contributor to the national economy after tourism and forms the backbone of world shipping. The Greek fleet flies a variety of flags, however some Greek shipowners gradually return to Greece following the changes to the legislative framework governing their operations and the improvement of infrastructure.Blogger Tips and Tricks

MOSCOW, -03/10/09.. 19:15

The Russian industrial safety regulator, Rostekhnadzor, announced on Saturday the results of a probe into the August disaster at the country's largest hydroelectric power station.

The August 17 disaster at the Sayano-Shushenskaya plant on Siberia's Yenisei River destroyed a turbine hall and killed 75 people.

"I will not conceal that the first theory was a terror attack... We have probed into everything in detail, no traces of a terror attack have been found," Nikolai Kutyin, Rostekhnadzor head, told reporters.

He said a number of aspects, including design, operation and repair drawbacks, had caused the disaster.

According to Rostekhnadzor's findings, ex-Russian top energy officials, including former electricity monopoly chief Anatoly Chubais are to blame for what had caused the accident.

The heads of the plant itself and its owner, RusHydro, also failed to take every effort to prevent the disaster, while the Sayano-Shushenskaya staff had not been trained for the disaster scenario, the technical probe said.

The Rostekhnadzor head said Timur Khaziakhmetov, a RusHydro senior official in charge of operations and control department, had asked to mention him among "those guilty."

However, Kutyin cautioned that those guilty would be announced in court.

Kutyin said Rostekhnadzor would continue work to further assess design drawbacks and the performance of equipment installed at the power plant that would require another few months.

Meanwhile, the head of a committee of the parents of those killed on August 17 told the Ekho Moskvy radio on Saturday that he was dissatisfied with the results of the Rostekhnadzor probe and that the list of those responsible should include at least 30 officials.

"[August] 17 is a result of negligence, laxity, and a lack of engineering thinking," Nikolai Zholob said.

The damage from the disaster has been estimated at over 7.338 billion rubles ($244 mln), according to the probe. The sum includes the loss from the wreckage of major power generating assets, and environmental damage, preliminarily put at some 7 billion rubles ($232.4 mln) and about 63 million rubles ($2 mln), respectively.

Russian Energy Minister Sergei Shmatko said earlier on Saturday that the budget for work to repair the Sayno-Shushenskaya plant had been approved at 21.6 billion rubles ($717 mln) in 2009-2010.

ROME, ITaly (CNN) -October 3, 2009 -- Updated 1227 GMT (2027 HKT)-

Guido Bertolaso said about 30 people were still unaccounted for in the mudslides, which occurred after a heavy downpour hit Sicily two days ago.

Messina, which sits along the strait separating Sicily from mainland Italy, was one of the worst-hit areas. Mudslides blocked roads, with some of the towns near Messina reachable only by sea or on foot.

The Italian government declared a state of emergency, and Italian fire brigades and the army launched rescue operations.

Ρωσια : υπερπαραγωγή πετρελαίου [ 448 ]

Η Ρωσική παραγωγή ακατέργαστου πετρελαίου ξεπερνά τα Σαουδικά επίπεδα

FINANCIAL TIMES, By Chris Floo: October 3 2009 03:00 UKT

Irland : About 67% voted "Yes"...[ 447 ]

Ireland backs EU's Lisbon Treaty

A ballot box is opened as counting begins in the Dublin counting centre, 3 October 2009
Results showed a clear swing to the "Yes" camp

(BBC) - 3 October 2009 17:38 UK

Irish voters have strongly endorsed the European Union's Lisbon Treaty - 16 months after their first vote rejecting it plunged EU reforms into deadlock.

About 67% voted "Yes", official results from the latest referendum showed. Irish Prime Minister Brian Cowen hailed a "clear and resounding" endorsement.

The EU Commission called it a "vote of confidence" in the EU. Nearly all member states have ratified Lisbon.

The treaty is aimed at streamlining decision-making in the 27-nation bloc.

According to final results, 67.1% of Irish voters approved it, while 32.9% voted "No". Turnout in the three-million electorate was 58%.

The treaty cannot take effect until all member states ratify it. The only other countries yet to ratify Lisbon are the Czech Republic and Poland.

The parliaments of both countries have approved the treaty. Polish President Lech Kaczynski is expected to sign it in the coming days.

But the Czech Republic's eurosceptic President, Vaclav Klaus, said he would not sign the treaty until his country's Constitutional Court had pronounced on its validity.

LISBON TREATY
Creates new post of EU president (President of European Council)
New post of High Representative for Foreign Affairs
More decisions by majority vote, rather than unanimity
Ratified by all member states except Czech Republic, Ireland and Poland
Only Ireland held a referendum on it
Took a decade of negotiations
Was intended to take effect in January 2009

Ireland was the only EU member state to hold a referendum on Lisbon, though there have been calls for referendums in several countries.

"The Irish people have spoken with a clear and resounding voice," Mr Cowen said in a brief statement to reporters. "It is a good day for Ireland and a good day for Europe."

"The Irish people showed an Ireland embracing her future with Europe," he said.

The Irish anti-Lisbon group Coir said on Saturday: "We are extremely disappointed that the voice of the people was not heard the first time around."

EU hails 'victory'

Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt, whose country currently holds the EU presidency, called the vote "an important victory for Ireland and for all of Europe".

He said it was just a matter of time until the EU "finally can push the button for the better European co-operation that the Lisbon Treaty will give us".

Brian Cowen: "The Irish have supported reforms so the EU can become more efficient and more effective"

The European Commission President, Jose Manuel Barroso, praised the Irish "vote of confidence" in the EU, which he said showed a "desire to be a wholehearted member".

Irish opinion is thought to have swung behind the "Yes" vote this time because of the severity of the economic downturn, as well as the legal "guarantees" on Irish sovereignty that the EU pledged after the first referendum.

The legally binding "guarantees" state that Lisbon will not affect key areas of Irish sovereignty, such as taxation, military neutrality and family matters such as abortion - significant issues in last year's campaign in Ireland. But they have not yet been attached to the treaty.

The treaty is intended to make EU institutions better suited to the enlarged bloc of 27.

Declan Ganley: "Politically a masterful campaign"

Opponents see Lisbon as part of a federalist agenda that threatens national sovereignty.

In last year's vote, 46.6% of Irish voted "Yes" and 53.4% "No", and the rejection of the treaty plunged the EU into political gridlock.

All of the republic's major parties campaigned for a "Yes" vote except the nationalist Sinn Fein. The party believes rejecting the treaty would mean a more democratic EU.
