The Hellenic Navy (HN) (Greek: Πολεμικό Ναυτικό, Polemikó Naftikó, abbreviated ΠΝ) is the naval force of Greece, part of the Greek Armed Forces. The modern Greek navy has its roots in the naval forces of various Aegean Islands, which fought in the Greek War of Independence. During the periods of monarchy (1833–1924 and 1936–1973) it was known as the Royal Navy (Βασιλικόν Ναυτικόν, Vasilikón Naftikón, abbreviated ΒΝ).The total displacement of all the navy's vessels is approximately 150,000 tons. The motto of the Hellenic Navy is "Μέγα το της Θαλάσσης Κράτος" from Thucydides' account of Pericles' oration on the eve of the Peloponnesian War. This has been roughly translated as "Great is the country that controls the sea". The Hellenic Navy's emblem consists of an anchor in front of a crossed Christian cross and trident, with the cross symbolizing Greek Orthodoxy, and the trident symbolizing Poseidon, the god of the sea in Greek mythology. Pericles' words are written across the top of the emblem. "The navy, as it represents a necessary weapon for Greece, should only be created for war and aim to victory."...............The Hellenic Merchant Marine refers to the Merchant Marine of Greece, engaged in commerce and transportation of goods and services universally. It consists of the merchant vessels owned by Greek civilians, flying either the Greek flag or a flag of convenience. Greece is a maritime nation by tradition, as shipping is arguably the oldest form of occupation of the Greeks and a key element of Greek economic activity since the ancient times. Nowadays, Greece has the largest merchant fleet in the world, which is the second largest contributor to the national economy after tourism and forms the backbone of world shipping. The Greek fleet flies a variety of flags, however some Greek shipowners gradually return to Greece following the changes to the legislative framework governing their operations and the improvement of infrastructure.Blogger Tips and Tricks

Indonesia's most-wanted terrorist [ 451 ]

Police: DNA confirms Noordin dead

JAKARTA, Indonesia (CNN) -19.9.09- Indonesian police say they have DNA evidence identifying the man they killed this week as Noordin Top, the nation's most-wanted terror suspect.

"We have matched this Malaysian man's DNA against his family and it's 100 percent match," Nanan Soekarna, a national police representative said Saturday.

The police will coordinate with Malaysian authorities to return the body to his country.

Noordin was killed in a raid in Central Java early Thursday morning, authorities said.

Indonesian authorities had already said they identified the body by fingerprints. Video Watch how Noordin's identity was established »

Police learned of Noordin's whereabouts after apprehending and interrogating two terror suspects on Wednesday. Anti-terror forces launched their raid in the Kepok Sari neighborhood of Surakarta in central Java around midnight. It ended after a five-hour standoff capped by a firefight.

Authorities had hunted for Noordin for years, accusing him of involvement in July's twin suicide bombings at the Marriott and Ritz-Carlton hotels in Jakarta, the 2002 Bali nightclub bombing and attacks on the same Marriott hotel in Jakarta in 2003, as well as the Australian embassy in 2004.

Authorities initially thought Noordin was killed during an 18-hour raid by police last month in Central Java, but DNA evidence showed it was someone else.

Noordin was one of four people killed in the raid this week, authorities said.

Also killed in the raid were two of Noordin's key associates, Urwa and Aryo Sudarso, and the owner of the home where the standoff took place.

Urwa was convicted in the 2004 bombing of the Australian embassy but was later released on probation.

Aryo Sudarso was an apprentice of Azahari bin Husin, believed to be one of the masterminds behind the Bali bombings in 2002 and 2005. Husin died in a shootout with security forces four years ago in East Java.

Three others were arrested.

"We found several guns, some grenades and eight bags of explosive materials," said Nanan Soekarna, the police spokesman.

A handful of suspects have been on the run since the July bombings, which were carried out by members of a splinter group of the militant organization Jemaah Islamiyah, which has ties to al Qaeda.

Germany boosts terrorism alert level

From Frederik Pleitgen

BERLIN, Germany (CNN) -September 19, 2009 -

The German government raised its terrorism alert level after al Qaeda posted a video on the Internet threatening attacks in Germany if this month's elections do not come out the way the terrorist organization wants.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel addresses a press conference in Berlin on Friday.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel addresses a press conference in Berlin on Friday.

"The federal elections offer a special [opportunity] for propaganda and operative activity by terror groups," the Interior Ministry said on Friday. "A new video posted on September 18 by al Qaeda underlines this. The security services have therefore increased the threat level, which leads to increased security measures especially at airports and railway stations."

The ministry added that it has noted an uptick in threats against Germany by al Qaeda and other Islamist groups since the beginning of the year.

In his nearly 26-minute video statement, a man identified as Bekay Harrach, using the pseudonym Abu Talha and speaking in German, says that, if the September 27 elections vote into power parties that do not pledge to pull German troops from Afghanistan, there will be a "rude awakening."

The speaker calls on Muslims in Germany to stay away from public life during the first two weeks after the elections, implying that any attacks would take place then.

The speaker repeatedly criticizes German Chancellor Angela Merkel and her support of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

He also criticizes Merkel's rivals, the Social Democrats, but extended a "peace offer," stating, "If the German people vote for peace, then the Mujahedeen will choose peace with Germany as well. And with the withdrawal of the last German soldier from Afghanistan, the last Mujahed will also leave Germany. Al Qaeda gives you their word."

The speaker concludes by saying that it is up to the people of Germany to decide their fate: "In a democracy, only the people can order their soldiers to come home. But if the German people decide to continue this war, then it has sealed its own fate and, on top of that, it will have demonstrated that in a democracy civilians are not innocent after all."

He promises the city of Kiel will remain safe.

Gays "No Pasaran" in Serbia.....[ 448 ]

Serbian gay parade is called off

'We're waiting for you' poster in Belgrade
Belgrade is full of posters telling participants: "We're expecting you"

(BBC) Sept. 19,2009 - A Gay Pride march in Serbia has been called off after police told organisers they could not guarantee its safety.

One of the organisers said Serbia's prime minister had urged them to switch Sunday's rally from central Belgrade, but the proposal was "unacceptable".

President Boris Tadic vowed on Friday to protect the participants.

Anti-gay groups had threatened violence if the march were allowed to go ahead. "We're expecting you" posters had been stuck around the Serbian capital.

"Pride parades are traditionally organised in the main streets of big cities," said one of the organisers, Dragana Vuckovic.

It is "unacceptable" to stage the parade in a "field", she told the media.

The Republic of Serbia has capitulated. We have not
Gay Pride organising committee

The decision had been taken after a meeting on Saturday with Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic.

Nationalist and religious leaders have opposed a Serbian bill banning discrimination against homosexuals.

The ultra-nationalist Serb Popular Movement 1389 hailed the cancellation of Sunday's march as "a great victory for normal Serbia".

"In our city infidels and Satanists will not pass," it added.

Homosexuality in Serbia is still far from accepted, says the BBC's Mark Lowen in Belgrade.

The gay scene is underground and members of the community are regularly the target of discrimination.

Belgrade's first gay parade in 2001 descended into chaos amid widespread violence by mobs of protesters - with television images of bleeding participants and police firing rubber bullets broadcast around the world.

The organising committee of the planned Sunday march will certainly keep up the pressure, says our correspondent.

"The state has failed the fundamental test," it says in a statement. "The next exam period is approaching fast. The Republic of Serbia has capitulated. We have not."

MOSCOW, September 19 (RIA Novosti) - Tehran's attempts to deny the Holocaust are inadmissible and do not contribute to the establishment of an effective international dialogue on Iran, a Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman said on Saturday.

In a televised address to the nation on Friday, the Iranian leader, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, questioned the events of the Holocaust and called for investigations into it.

"Similar statements, no matter where they come from, violate the truth and are completely inadmissible," Andrei Nesterenko told reporters.

He said attempts to deny the Holocaust harm the memory of WWII victims and all those who fought against the Nazi.

"This does not contribute to the settlement of the task to create a favorable international atmosphere for establishing and maintaining effective dialogue on all issues concerning Iran either," the Russian diplomat said.

Israel holds a memorial day in April in remembrance of the six million Jews killed by Nazi Germany.

The Polish port city of Gdansk held international events on September 1 to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the start of World War II. At least 20 world leaders attended.
