For Finns, Rovaniemi's location just north of the Arctic Circle is Christmas headquarters. Children make gingerbread cookies with Mrs. Claus, enroll in Elf School and write wish lists with a traditional quill.

(CNN) -- Any old city can string up a few lights downtown and call it a holiday celebration.

From Mexico to Malta, northern lights to sunny skies, these places are doing Christmas better than the rest this year.

Bath, England

There are few cities in the world where you can celebrate the birth of Jesus and the birth of Jane Austen with the same amount of fanfare, but Bath happens to be one of them.

The Theatre Royal, which Austen mentions in "Northanger Abbey" and "Persuasion," is home to a musical celebration accompanied by mince pies and mulled wine in honor of the literary doyenne.

There's also a varied program of holiday drama, musicals, opera and concerts, including Cinderella and Rumpelstiltskin.

A seasonal favorite, the 18-day Bath Christmas Market has over 170 wooden chalets selling distinctively British handmade crafts in a quaint Georgian setting.

Straddled between the imposing Bath Abbey and the venerable Roman Baths, the market offers a festive way to discover the character of Bath, which is the only entire city in the UK to have been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Bath on Ice is a great excuse to bundle up and lace up your skates, while the Thermae Bath Spa is the perfect reason to strip down and savor the steam emanating from the thermal mineral-rich waters of an open-air rooftop pool with spectacular views over the city.

When there's snow on the ground, New York can feel like the capital of Christmas.

New York

Rockefeller Center lies at the core of the New York Christmas.

Its famed ice rink has been around for 78 years; the decorated tree is an 81-year-old tradition.

Across the street, Radio City hosts the annual Christmas Spectacular, starring the Rockettes.

On the southwest corner of Central Park, Columbus Circle hosts more than 100 vendors selling clothes, gifts, snacks and drinks at the Holiday Market.

Central Park has two ponds for skating and horse-drawn carriage rides.

Fashion's biggest names join in the festivities, setting up impressive Christmas window displays.

The most glamorous cases, at the Fifth Avenue flagships and department stores like Saks and Bergdorf, are impressive enough to melt the heart of Anna Wintour.

Malta's nativity experience includes grazing live animals.

Malta

Visiting presepju, or nativity scenes, is an integral part of Christmas in Malta.

Every year, residents proudly open their shutters, and sometimes even their garage doors, to display their holy crib confections to the public.

On a grander scale, the Bethlehem f'Ghajnsielem is a life-size nativity experience spread over 20,0000 square meters of formerly abandoned fields.

Inhabited and animated by over 150 actors comprised of entire families, the village takes visitors back in time to Judea of 2,000 years ago, complete with oil lamps, turn mills, grazing animals, crafts areas teaching traditional skills and folklore, a tavern, and of course a grotto housing baby Jesus.

Downtown Valletta is also home to a lively Christmas spirit, with carolers singing outside the Baroque St. John's Co-Cathedral during advent, and a dizzying display of Christmas lights on Republic Street.

The Manoel Theater is well known for its annual Christmas pantomime -- this year Pinocchio themed.

A visit to the privately owned Museum of Toys featuring dolls, soldiers, train sets, and clockwork tin trinkets dating as far back as the 1790's, is a heartwarming homage to childhood.

Barcelona, Spain

If you can manage to extend your Christmas holiday until Three King's Day (January 5), there's no better place to catch up with Melchior, Gaspar and Balthazar than Barcelona.

On the evening of January 4, they arrive at the city's port on the Santa Eulalia -- their very own ship -- in bearded and velvet-robed splendor.

Canons are fired, fireworks are set off, and as the mayor hands them the keys to the city, the magic of the Magi officially commences.

They parade through the streets in a magnificent cavalcade of floats that includes camels, elephants, giraffes and dazzling costumes.

Rovaniemi, Lapland, Finland

While legends dating as far back as the 1820s cite the North Pole as the official home of Santa Claus and his jolly missus, the Finns would have us believe otherwise.

For them, Rovaniemi, Lapland, located just north of the Arctic Circle, is Christmas HQ.

Here, children make gingerbread cookies with Mrs. Claus, enroll in Elf School or take a calligraphy class and compose their Christmas wish lists with a traditional quill.

Other area attractions include the Ranua Zoo, home to baby polar bears, wolverines and moose; Sirmakko reindeer farm, where visitors can take a sled-led reindeer safari; and the Arktikum, a science center where the mystery of the northern lights is revealed.

Those in search of a truly frosty experience can stay in the Arctic Snow Hotel, made entirely of snow and ice, but equipped with saunas and hot tubs in which to thaw.

Nuremberg, Germany

The Nuremberg Christmas market (Nurnberger Christkindlesmarkt) is a German institution, pulling in more than 2 million visitors each year.

Highlights include a giant carved wooden Ferris wheel, old-fashioned carousel and steam train.

Unlike all those "fake" Christmas markets that have been popping up in the region, Nuremberg's Christmas Market Council is serious about making sure only traditional handmade toys and holiday goods are sold.

No mass-produced plastic garlands here.

The market's 200 select vendors also put up fantastic displays as they compete for the Most Beautiful Stall Design award.

The top three walk away with a gold, silver or bronze "Plum People" awards.

Adults can enjoy Nuremberg spicy gingerbread and mugs of mulled wine.

For kids, there's the Toy Museum, while the German Railway Museum is a hit with everyone.

Quebec City, Canada

If you're the type who likes to celebrate Christmas around a tree made from recycled sheet metal, with lights powered by the pedaling of nearby cyclists, Quebec is your destination.

A haven for environmentally friendly, outdoor enthusiasts, the city bustles with activity, offering holiday programs for all tastes.

Modern-day Victorians can enjoy a candlelit evening of stories from Charles Dickens, recounting the Christmas traditions of yore.

Sausage and roast chestnut lovers can browse the wares at the German Christmas market.

The more religiously inclined can wander an exposition of nativity scenes from around the world.

The nearby Sentier des Caps de Charlevoix offers family-friendly hiking, snowshoeing and skiing, while speed devils can zoom around in a snowmobile from Nord Expe.

Iceland delivers a festive Christmas.

Reykjavik, Iceland

When it comes to Christmas celebrations, Iceland has a few peculiarities.

Among these, 13 "Yuletide Lads" (scruffy Santas) are said to bring gifts to nice children for the 13 nights leading to Christmas.

Rows of small, beautiful huts make up the Yule Town Christmas market on Ingolfstorg.

Here, visitors can pick up colorful Christmas gifts, decorations and treats.

The shopping differs day to day as some craftsmen and designers set up stalls for only one day.

Beaming down onto a city covered in snow and Christmas lights, northern lights displays add to Reykjavik's festival feel.

San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

Piñatas, posadas and ponche sum up the festivities in this colorful Mexican city, where Christmas is both a solemn and celebratory affair.

Leading up to December 24, you're likely to stumble upon Mary and Joseph strolling the streets, as locals make pilgrimages from home to home, singing to "ask for posada" or "beg for shelter" as they reenact the journey to Bethlehem.

Pinatas and ponche (a mulled fruit drink) cap a long evening of peregrinations around this cobblestoned city, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its wealth of grand churches, well-preserved architecture and grand zocalos.

Μυστήριο καλύπτει τις συνθήκες θανάτου οκτώ παιδιών που βρέθηκαν νεκρά μέσα σε ένα σπίτι στην πολιτεία του Κουίνσλαντ της Αυστραλίας, σύμφωνα με την αστυνομία, με τα μέσα ενημέρωσης να κάνουν λόγο για μαζική δολοφονία.

Οκτώ παιδιά, ηλικίας από 18 μηνών ως 15 ετών, βρέθηκαν νεκρά μέσα σε σπίτι μαζί με μία 34χρονη γυναίκα τραυματισμένη, η οποία είναι η μητέρα των επτά από αυτά, στο προάστιο Μανούρα της πόλης Κερνς, ανακοίνωσε σήμερα η αστυνομία και σύμφωνα με πολλά μέσα ενημέρωσης της χώρας τα παιδιά μαχαιρώθηκαν μέχρι θανάτου, ενώ σύμφωνα με μία άλλη εκδοχή ο θάνατός τους προήλθε από ασφυξία, ενδεχομένως ως συνέπεια στραγγαλισμού. Η αστυνομία, πάντως, δεν έχει ανακοινώσει επισήμως την αιτία θανάτου τους.
Η Αυστραλία βρίσκεται ήδη σε ύψιστο συναγερμό έπειτα από το περιστατικό ομηρίας την Τρίτη στο Σίδνεϊ που διήρκεσε 16 ώρες και άφησε πίσω του τρεις νεκρούς, μεταξύ των οποίων και ο δράστης.
Κάτοικοι της περιοχής δήλωσαν στους δημοσιογράφους ότι τα παιδιά βρήκε νεκρά ο 20χρονος μεγαλύτερος αδελφός τους, όταν επέστρεψε στο σπίτι, αλλά η αστυνομία δεν έχει επιβεβαιώσει την πληροφορία αυτή.
Η εξαδέλφη της τραυματισμένης γυναίκας, η Λίζα Τέιντεϊ, επιβεβαίωσε ότι πρόκειται για την μητέρα των επτά παιδιών, ενώ το όγδοο θύμα εικάζεται ότι ήταν μέλος της ίδιας οικογένειας, ίσως εξάδελφος.
Η αστυνομία ανακοίνωσε ότι η 34χρονη γυναίκα μεταφέρθηκε στο νοσοκομείο με τραύματα από μαχαίρι, αλλά δεν κινδυνεύει η ζωή της και ότι συνεργάζεται με τις αρχές, ενώ στο νοσοκομείο έχει μεταφερθεί κι ένα δεύτερο πρόσωπο--ενδεχομένως ο πατριός των θυμάτων που διέμενε στο ίδιο σπίτι.

Κατά τις έρευνές της στο σπίτι, η αστυνομία βρήκε τα πτώματα των οκτώ παιδιών.
Η αστυνομία του Κερνς συμβούλευσε τους κατοίκους να διατηρήσουν την ψυχραιμία τους.
"Δεν συντρέχει λόγος το κοινό να ανησυχεί γι αυτό, πέραν του ότι πρόκειται γι ένα τραγικό, τραγικό συμβάν. Η κατάσταση ελέγχεται επί του παρόντος και δεν θα πρέπει να ανησυχεί κανένας", δήλωσε στους δημοσιογράφους ο επιθεωρητής Μπρούνο Ασνικάρ.
"Επισήμως δεν υπάρχει κάποιος ύποπτος. Μιλάμε με πολλούς ανθρώπους. Ο οποιοσδήποτε είχε κάποια ανάμειξη τις τελευταίες δύο ή τρεις ημέρες μας ενδιαφέρει", είπε στους δημοσιογράφους ο Ασνικάρ.
Ο αυστραλός πρωθυπουργός Τόνι Άμποτ χαρακτήρισε το περιστατικό "θλιβερό" και σχολίασε ότι αυτές τις ημέρες η χώρα "δοκιμάζεται" (έπειτα και από την πρόσφατη ομηρία).
"Όλοι οι γονείς θα νιώσουν μία βαθιά θλίψη από αυτό που συμβαίνει. Πρόκειται για ένα ειδεχθές έγκλημα. Απόψε ο λαός θα κλάψει και θα προσευχηθεί για αυτά τα παιδιά", αναφέρει σε ανακοίνωση ο πρωθυπουργός.
Ειδικοί μεταβαίνουν από την πρωτεύουσα της πολιτείας, το Μπρισμπέιν, για να βοηθήσουν στις έρευνες, είπε ο ίδιος και τόνισε ότι οι πληροφορίες παραμένουν συγκεγχυμένες και ο τελικός αριθμός των νεκρών ενδεχομένως να μειωθεί ή να αυξηθεί.
Τα αυστραλιανά μέσα ενημέρωσης ανέφεραν ότι στη συγκεκριμένη συνοικία κατοικούν κυρίως Αβορίγινες Αυστραλοί και οι κάτοικοι δηλώνουν ότι στην περιοχή υπάρχει υψηλό ποσοστό αλκοολισμού και εγκληματικότητας.
Η αστυνομία έχει αποκλείσει τον τόπο του εγκλήματος και ακόμη δεν έχει γίνει γνωστή η ταυτότητα των θυμάτων.

December 20, 2014 marks NASA Ames Research Center's 75th Anniversary. The center was established in 1939 as the second laboratory of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, and was named for the chair of the NACA, Joseph S. Ames.

 It was located at Moffett Field in Sunnyvale, California, now at the heart of Silicon Valley.

 The Laboratory was renamed the NASA Ames Research Center with the formation of NASA in 1958.

Pakistan mourns deaths of 148 killed in Taliban attack

PESHAWAR, Pakistan –  The Taliban massacre that killed 148 people, mostly children, at a military-run school in northwestern Pakistan left a scene of heart-wrenching devastation, pools of blood and young lives snuffed out as the nation mourned and mass funerals for the victims got underway Wednesday.
The attack at the Army Public School and College in the city of Peshawar on Tuesday was the deadliest slaughter of innocents in the country and horrified a nation already weary of unending terrorist assaults.

Blood was still splattered on the floor and the stairs as media were allowed inside the school a day after the attack. Torn notebooks, pieces of clothing and children's shoes were scattered about amid broken window glass, door frames and upturned chairs. A pair of child's eyeglasses lay broken on the ground.
Prayer vigils were held across Pakistan and in other schools, students spoke of their shock at the brutal slayings in Peshawar, where children and teenagers were gunned down and some of the female teachers burned alive. Army commandos fought the Taliban in a day-long battle until the school was cleared and all the attackers were dead.

The attack began when seven Taliban gunmen, explosives strapped to their bodies, scaled a back wall using a ladder to get into the school on Tuesday morning. Once inside, they made their way into the main auditorium where many students had gathered for an event, military spokesman Maj. Gen. Asim Bajwa told reporters during the tour Wednesday.

The militants then made their way to the hall's stage and started shooting at random. As students tried to flee for the doors, they were shot and killed. The military recovered about 100 bodies from the auditorium alone, Bajwa said.
"This is not a human act," he added. "This is a national tragedy."
The government declared a three-day mourning period, starting Wednesday. Some of the critically wounded adults — members of the school staff — died overnight, and authorities raised the overall death toll to 148. The number of students killed remained at 132. Another 121 students and three staff members were wounded in the assault.

The body of the school principal, Tahira Qazi, was retrieved overnight from the debris. Qazi was inside her office when the militants made their way into the administration building, some 20 meters (yards) from the auditorium. She ran and locked herself into the bathroom but the attackers threw a grenade inside, through a vent, and killed her, Bajwa said.
Several funerals were also held overnight, but most of the victims were buried Wednesday.
"They finished in minutes what I had lived my whole life for, my son," said laborer Akhtar Hussain, tears streaming down his face as he buried his 14-year-old, Fahad. He said he had worked for years in Dubai to earn a livelihood for his children.
"That innocent one is now gone in the grave, and I can't wait to join him, I can't live anymore," he wailed, banging his fists against his head.

The Taliban said the attack was revenge for a military offensive against their safe havens in the northwest, along the border with Afghanistan, which began in June. Analysts said the school siege showed that even diminished, the militant group still could inflict horrific carnage.
The attack drew swift condemnation from around the world. President Barack Obama said the "terrorists have once again showed their depravity."
Pakistan's teenage Nobel Peace laureate Malala Yousafzai — herself a survivor of a Taliban shooting — said she was "heartbroken" by the bloodshed.
Even Taliban militants in neighboring Afghanistan decried the killing spree, calling it "un-Islamic."
Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif pledged to step up the campaign that — along with U.S. drone strikes — has targeted the militants.

"We must not forget these scenes," Sharif said Wednesday at a top-level meeting in Peshawar. "The way they left bullet holes in the bodies of innocent kids, the way they tore apart their faces with bullets."
Later Wednesday, Sharif's office said he approved an order lifting the ban on the death penalty for terrorist crimes, which has been in place since 2008. Sharif lifted the ban last year but then re-imposed it when his government launched peace talks with militants.
The move followed a top-level meeting between the prime minister and military and civilian law enforcement officials on the legal system's "inadequacies in punishing terrorists."

Earlier, Sharif said he spoke to Afghan President Ashraf Ghani late Tuesday to discuss how both countries could do more to fight terrorism. The two agreed to launch fresh operations on their respective sides of the border, Sharif said, and pledged to "clean this region from terrorism."

Pakistan has in the past criticized Afghanistan for what it said was a failure to take action against militants on their side of the border, specifically faulting Kabul for allegedly not helping when Pakistan launched the North Waziristan operation in June. Afghanistan has also repeatedly accused Pakistan of harboring militants in its tribal regions.
But Bajwa, the army spokesman, said that after the Peshawar massacre, Islamabad is "hoping that there will be a strong action, a corresponding action from the Afghanistan side, from across the border, in the coming days."
In neighboring India, which has long accused Pakistan of supporting anti-India guerrillas, schools on Wednesday observed two minutes of silence for the Peshawar victims at the urging of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who called the attack "a senseless act of unspeakable brutality."

In an email on Wednesday, the Pakistani Taliban spokesman Mohammad Khurasani claimed the attack was justified because the Pakistani army has allegedly long been killing innocent children and families of their fighters.
He vowed more such militant attacks and told Pakistani civilians to detach themselves from all military institution.
The Pakistani Taliban also posted photographs of six Islamic fighters they said took part in the Peshawar assault. In one photo, the militants are seen wearing army fatigues, standing with a local Taliban leader in what the statement claimed one of the Pakistani tribal regions.

Η πακιστανική πόλη και όλη η υφήλιος έμεινε με κομμένη την ανάσα όταν κομάντος Ταλιμπάν έκαναν επίθεση σήμερα το πρωί σε σχολείο όπου φοιτούν παιδιά στρατιωτικών και σκόρπισαν τον θάνατο. Αγνωστος παραμένει ο αριθμός των τραυματιών, σύμφωνα με νοσοκομειακές πηγές.

Και οι έξι δράστες της επίθεσης των Ταλιμπάν σε σχολείο στη Πεσαβάρ είναι νεκροί, όπως ανακοίνωσε ο Στρατός του Πακιστάν. «Ο έκτος τρομοκράτης σκοτώθηκε. Ελικόπτερα πραγματοποίησαν επίθεση πάνω από τις εγκαταστάσεις, ενώ αυτοκινητοπομπή ασθενοφόρων μεταφέρει τραυματισμένα παιδιά στο νοσοκομείο.

Ο πρωθυπουργός του Πακιστάν Ναουάζ Σαρίφ χαρακτήρισε τη σφαγή από τους Ταλιμπάν στο σχολείο που διευθύνεται από τον στρατό και που φοιτούν παιδιά στρατιωτικών στην Πεσαβάρ «εθνική τραγωδία».

«Δεν μπορώ να μείνω στο Ισλαμαμπάντ. Αυτή είναι μια εθνική τραγωδία που εξαπέλυσαν βάρβαροι. Αυτά ήταν τα παιδιά μου. Είναι απώλεια για μένα, για τη χώρα. Αναχωρώ τώρα για την Πεσαβάρ και θα εποπτεύσω ο ίδιος την επιχείρηση», που είναι σε εξέλιξη, σύμφωνα με δήλωσή του.



Το νοσοκομείο Lady Reading στην Πεσαβάρ ανακοίνωσε ότι στις εγκαταστάσεις του έχουν μεταφερθεί οι σοροί πέντε σπουδαστών και ότι δίνει τις πρώτες βοήθειες στους τραυματίες, ανάμεσά τους δύο άνδρες εκπαιδευτικοί.

«Πολλοί τραυματίες είναι στο χειρουργείο, είναι σε κρίσιμη κατάσταση, υποβάλλονται σε θεραπεία», δήλωσε ο εκπρόσωπος του νοσοκομείου Ετζάζ Χαν.

Ένας δάσκαλος είπε ότι οι δράστες της επίθεσης είχαν στόχο το σχολείο, την ώρα που διεξάγονταν εξετάσεις. «Μισή ώρα μετά την επίθεση, ο στρατός ήρθε και σφράγισε το σχολείο», δήλωσε ο δάσκαλος σε ιδιωτικό τηλεοπτικό κανάλι έξω από το πολιορκημένο σχολείο.



«Βρισκόμασταν στην αίθουσα των εξετάσεων, όταν πραγματοποιήθηκε η επίθεση. Τώρα οι άνδρες του στρατού εκκαθαρίζουν τις τάξεις μία προς μία».




Την ευθύνη για την επίθεση ανέλαβε αμέσως μια οργάνωση πακιστανών Ταλιμπάν.

«Στείλαμε έξι άνδρες για την επίθεση αυτή, ανάμεσά τους ελεύθεροι σκοπευτές και καμικάζι ζωσμένοι με εκρηκτικά. Έχουν την εντολή να πυροβολήσουν εναντίον όλων των ενηλίκων σπουδαστών αλλά να μην πλήξουν τα παιδιά», δήλωσε ο Μουχάμαντ Ούμαρ Χορασάνι, εκπρόσωπος της ΤΤΡ, της μεγαλύτερης οργάνωσης ισλαμιστών ανταρτών Ταλιμπάν της χώρας.



«Είναι μια επίθεση σε αντίποινα για την επιχείρηση του στρατού στο Βόρειο Ουαζιριστάν», δήλωσε αναφερόμενος στη στρατιωτική επιχείρηση κατά των Ταλιμπάν που ξεκίνησε τον Ιούνιο.

Sydney - A teenager was killed in a shark attack at a reef off Australia's northeast coast on Monday, with ambulance officials saying he was dead by the time he reached shore.
The 17-year-old was bitten on the upper thigh at Rudder Reef off Port Douglas, about 60km north of Cairns, and likely died of blood loss.
"We received a call about a 17-year-old with a serious upper thigh injury," a Queensland Ambulance spokesperson told AFP, adding that attempts to resuscitate him were made at the scene.
"A boat brought him in but he didn't survive," she added.
Queensland Ambulance Service executive manager of operations Greg Thiedecke said the boy went into cardiac arrest immediately after being bitten on his right upper leg, groin and upper arm.
"It would be speculating but [there are] a lot of large blood vessels in the groin area, so for him to go into cardiac arrest that quickly would be probably blood loss," he told the Cairns Post.
Veteran diver Colonel McKenzie, who heads the Association of Marine Park Tourism Operators, told reporters Rudder Reef was not a common spot for dive tourism operators.

But he said it was popular with spear fishing enthusiasts, and there was a fatal shark attack at nearby Opal Reef almost a decade ago to the day.
Thiedecke said he grew up in nearby Cairns and he had not dealt with any shark attacks in his 25 years of ambulance duty "so it's very rare".
Experts say attacks by sharks, which are common in Australian waters, are increasing as water sports become more popular.
In October, a young surfer lost parts of both arms in an attack by two great white sharks off the south coast of Western Australia.
The most recent fatality was in September when a man was killed in front of his wife while swimming at Byron Bay on the east coast.

Τίτλοι τέλους έπεσαν στο θρίλερ της ομηρίας μετά από έφοδο που πραγματοποίησε η αστυνομία στο καφέ στο Σίδνεϊ όπου ένας 49χρονος Ιρανός κρατούσε ομήρους εργαζόμενους και πελάτες.

Η επιχείρηση της αστυνομίας πραγματοποιήθηκε μετά από 16 ώρες ομηρίας, όταν κάποιοι όμηροι (περίπου πέντε ή έξι) βγήκαν από καφέ Lindt στο κέντρο της πόλης και ακούστηκαν ισχυροί κρότοι.

Ισχυρά οπλισμένοι αστυνομικοί εισέβαλαν στο κτίριο και ακολούθησαν πυροβολισμοί.

Η αστυνομία επιβεβαίωσε ότι η ομηρία έλαβε τέλος.



Πληροφορίες που μεταδόθηκαν από μέσα ενημέρωσης έκαναν λόγο για δύο νεκρούς, ωστόσο η αστυνομία τόνισε ότι δεν μπορεί να επιβεβαιώσει αυτές τις πληροφορίες.

(CNN) -- Miss South Africa Rolene Strauss was crowned Miss World on Sunday in a competition in London.

"South Africa, this is for you," she said in an interview after the pageant. "I'm so proud of you, and I'm proud to be your representative."

Strauss, 22, inherited the crown from Miss World 2013, Megan Young of the Philippines. She won the title over runner-up Miss Hungary Edina Kulcsar. Miss United States Elizabeth Safrit took third place.

Strauss, a fourth-year medical student at University of the Free State, put her studies on hold after being crowned Miss South Africa in March. In her official Miss World 2014 introduction video, she credits former South African President Nelson Mandela with paving the way for her to pursue a career in medicine by creating a democratic South Africa.

Strauss said she looked forward to continuing the legacy of Miss World CEO Julia Morley, founder of "Beauty With a Purpose," a nonprofit that supports humanitarian projects of Miss World contestants.

Those who participate in a charitable contest or cause through the organization compete for the "Beauty With a Purpose" award, winning points toward their final score.

The focus on charitable acts helps counter criticism that the pageant promotes superficial images of women through swimsuit competitions and slinky evening gowns. As Miss South Africa, Strauss has promoted projects in women's rights, health and education, including one to provide menstruation education to schoolgirls in South Africa.

-Ο ομογενής δικηγόρος Στέφαν Μπαλαφούτης είναι ένας από τους πέντε ομήρους που κατάφεραν να διαφύγουν από την καφετέρια στο κέντρο του Σίδνεϊ, όπου ένοπλος συνεχίζει να κρατά αδιευκρίνιστο αριθμό ομήρων. 

Ο Στ.Μπαλαφούτης δεν έκανε δηλώσεις αλλά έδωσε πληροφορίες στην αστυνομία για τον δράστη και τους άλλους ομήρους.
Ανακοινώθηκε, επίσης, το όνομα άλλης μίας από τους ομήρους, της Έλι Τσεν, μίας εργαζόμενης στο καφέ.
Σύμφωνα με πηγές της αστυνομίας, η ομηρία ενδέχεται να μην λυθεί για πολλές ώρες ακόμη καθώς στόχος της είναι να λήξει αναίμακτα.

Ο ένοπλος που κρατεί ομήρους σε ένα καφέ του Σίδνεϊ ζήτησε μια σημαία της οργάνωσης Ισλαμικό Κράτος και υποστηρίζει πως τέσσερις βόμβες έχουν τοποθετηθεί σε διάφορα σημεία, μετέδωσε το τηλεοπτικό δίκτυο Κανάλι 10.

Η αστυνομία δεν επιβεβαίωσε τις πληροφορίες αυτές.

Το Κανάλι 10 εξήγησε πως μίλησε "απ' ευθείας" με δύο από τα πρόσωπα που κρατούνται στο εσωτερικό του καφέ, το οποίο βρίσκεται στη Μάρτιν Πλέις, μια πεζοδρομημένη πλατεία στην επιχειρηματική συνοικία του Σίδνεϊ.

"Επιβεβαιώνουν δύο απαιτήσεις του δράστη", ανέφερε το δίκτυο στο λογαριασμό του στο Twitter. "Θέλει να του φέρουν στο καφέ τη σημαία του Ισλαμικού Κράτους. Η δεύτερη απαίτησή του είναι να μιλήσει στον πρωθυπουργό".

Τα δύο πρόσωπα, δύο γυναίκες, "λένε πως υπάρχουν τέσσερις βόμβες, δύο στο Lindt Cafe και δύο άλλες αλλού στην επιχειρηματική συνοικία του Σίδνεϊ", πρόσθεσε το τηλεοπτικό δίκτυο.

Εκατοντάδες ένοπλοι αστυνομικοί έχουν περικυκλώσει το Lindt Chocolat Cafe, όπου όμηροι κρατούν σ' ένα παράθυρο μια μαύρη σημαία με εν μέρει ορατή μια αραβική επιγραφή. Φαίνεται πως πρόκειται για τη σαχάντα, τη μουσουλμανική ομολογία της πίστης: "Δεν υπάρχει Θεός παρά μόνο ο Αλλάχ και ο Μωάμεθ είναι ο Προφήτης Του".

Πέντε πρόσωπα έχουν καταφέρει να βγουν από το κατάστημα, αλλά μέχρι στιγμής δεν έχει διευκρινιστεί αν διέφυγαν ή αν απελευθερώθηκαν.

Οι δύο γυναίκες που διέφυγαν φορούσαν και οι δύο ποδιές οι οποίες δείχνουν πως είναι μέλη του προσωπικού του καφέ Lindt.

Τηλεοπτικές εικόνες είχαν δείξει νωρίτερα τρεις από τους ομήρους να βγαίνουν τρέχοντας από το κτίριο.

Δεν είναι σαφές αν οι όμηροι απελευθερώθηκαν από τον ένοπλο ή αν δραπέτευσαν.

Θέλουμε να λήξει αναίμακτα λέει η αστυνομία

Στόχος της αυστραλιανής αστυνομίας είναι η αναίμακτη απελευθέρωση των ομήρων, ειδικά τώρα που έχει κατορθώσει να έρθει σε επικοινωνία με τον δράστη.

«Θα είμαστε υπομονετικοί. Θέλουμε το επεισόδιο αυτό να λήξει αναίμακτα», δήλωσε η υπαρχηγός της αστυνομίας της Νέας Νότιας Ουαλίας Κάθριν Μπερν.

Μέχρι στιγμής δεν υπάρχουν επιβεβαιωμένες πληροφορίες για Έλληνες μεταξύ των ομήρων.

Ομογενείς αυτόπτες μάρτυρες, όπως ο Ακης Καστελλορίου που εργάζεται σε τράπεζα που στεγάζεται σε κτίριο της περιοχής και ο Γιάννης Τρυπιδάκης που διαθέτει δικηγορικό γραφείο στην περιοχή, είπαν ότι η εκκένωση των κτιρίων έγινε ψύχραιμα και με πειθαρχία.

Άγνωστος παραμένει ακόμα ο αριθμός των ομήρων που κρατούνται στο καφέ στο κέντρο του Σίδνεϊ από όπου έχουν βγει πέντε όμηροι, δυο γυναίκες και τρεις άνδρες.

Η αστυνομία ήρθε σε επαφή με τον ένοπλο που κρατεί τους ομήρους, αλλά αρνήθηκε να κάνει εικασίες για τα πιθανά κίνητρά του. Επίσης δεν υπάρχει καμιά ένδειξη πως ο ένοπλος έχει βλάψει κάποιον από τους υπόλοιπους ομήρους.

Το κέντρο του Σίδνεϊ έχει παραλύσει, πολλά δημόσια κτίρια όπως η Όπερα και η Βιβλιοθήκη έχουν εκκενωθεί και γύρω από το καφέ όπου κρατούνται οι όμηροι βρίσκονται πυροσβεστικά οχήματα και οχήματα πρώτων βοηθειών και πολυάριθμοι ένοπλοι αστυνομικοί.

Λόγω της κρισιμότητας της κατάστασης ο Αυστραλός πρωθυπουργός, Τόνι Άμποτ, ο οποίος έκανε έκκληση για ψυχραιμία αλλά και επαγρύπνηση, παρέμεινε εκτάκτως στην Καμπέρα απόψε.

Επιπλέον μέτρα ασφαλείας έχουν ληφθεί στο Σίδνεϊ αλλά και σε όλες τις αυστραλιανές πόλεις.

Νωρίτερα ο διευθύνων σύμβουλος της Lindt Australia Στιβ Λόαν είχε δηλώσει στο τηλεοπτικό δίκτυο Sky Business πως στο καφέ εργάζονταν γύρω στους 10 ανθρώπους και υπήρχαν "πιθανόν 30 πελάτες", αν και είχε διευκρινίσει πως πρόκειται για μια εκτίμηση.

Η Μπερν δήλωσε στους δημοσιογράφους ότι δεν υπάρχει καμιά ένδειξη πως ο ένοπλος έχει βλάψει κάποιον από τους υπόλοιπους ομήρους.

Οι όμηροι φαίνεται πως βγήκαν από μια πλευρική πόρτα του καφέ, όπου πριν από έξι ώρες άρχισε το επεισόδιο. Άγνωστος δράστης κρατάει άγνωστο αρθμό ομήρων μέσα στο Lindt Chocolate Cafe στην Μάρτιν Πλέις, μια πεζοδρομημένη πλατεία στην επιχειρηματική συνοικία του Σίδνεϊ, ανακοίνωσε η αστυνομία. Τοπική τηλεόραση έδειξε εικόνες στις οποίες όμηροι κρατούσαν μια μαύρη σημαία με λευκή αραβική επιγραφή σε παράθυρο του καταστήματος.

Το χρονικό της ομηρείας

Ολα ξεκίνησαν όταν αρχικά τα τοπικά τηελεοπτικά κανάλια μετέδωσαν πληροφορία για «ύποπτο δέμα» στο παγκοσμίου φήμης κτίριο της Όπερα του Σίδνεϊ γεγονός που δεν επιβεβαιώθηκε. Δυστυχώς όμως η είδηση ότι ένοπλοι κρατούν ομήρους στο κέντρο της πόλης, στην καφετέρια Lindt Chocolate Cafe όπως αποδείχτηκε αληθινή.

Ο πρωθυπουργός της Αυστραλίας ανέφερε ότι συγκάλεσε την Εθνική Επιτροπή Ασφάλειας για να ενημερωθεί σχετικά με τις έκτακτης ανάγκης εξελίξεις και την ομηρία.

Τόνι Αμποτ: Δεν είναι σαφές αν υπάρχουν πολιτικά κίνητρα στην κατάσταση ομηρίας

Ο πρωθυπουργός της Αυστραλίας Τόνι Άμποτ δήλωσε ότι δεν είναι απολύτως σαφές αν η ομηρία που είναι σε εξέλιξη σε ένα καφέ του Σίδνεϊ έχει πολιτικά κίνητρα. «Δεν γνωρίζουμε ακόμη εάν έχει πολιτικά κίνητρα, παρότι υπάρχουν κάποιες ενδείξεις ότι θα μπορούσε να είναι έτσι» είπε ο Άμποτ στους δημοσιογράφους στην Καμπέρα.

«Αυτό είναι ένα πολύ ανησυχητικό περιστατικό. Μπορώ να καταλάβω τις ανησυχίες και τις αγωνίες του λαού της Αυστραλίας» συμπλήρωσε ο Αυστραλός πρωθυπουργός χωρίς όμως να δώσει καμία πληροφορία σχετικά με τις ενέργειες για να λήξει η υπόθεση της ομηρίας.

Περίπου 40 με 50 οι όμηροι

Σύμφωνα με μαρτυρίες που έχουν στη διάθεσή τους οι αρχές ο δράστης ή οι δράστες κρατούν ίσως και 50 ομήρους.

Διευθυντικό στέλεχος της εταιρείας Lindt Australia, της εταιρείας υπό την ευθύνη της οποία λειτουργεί η καφετέρια, ανέφερε ότι στο κατάστημα εργάζονται περίπου 10 άνθρωποι και ότι πιθανότατα μέσα σε αυτό βρίσκονται άλλοι 30 πελάτες.

Μέσα ενημέρωσης της χώρας μεταδίδουν πως από παράθυρο είναι ορατή μια μαύρη σημαία με ένα λευκό αραβικό κείμενο.

Πληροφορίες αναφέρουν ότι οι δράστες ανάγκασαν τους ομήρους να κρατούν ψηλά μια μαύρη σημαία με λευκή αραβική επιγραφή και να στέκονται στην τζαμαρία με τα χέρια ψηλά. Φαίνεται πως πρόκειται για τη σαχάντα, τη μουσουλμανική ομολογία της πίστης: «Δεν υπάρχει Θεός παρά μόνο ο Αλλάχ και ο Μωάμεθ είναι ο Προφήτης Του».

Μια γυναίκα, η οποία εργάζεται απέναντι από την καφετέρια, είπε στους αστυνομικούς πως είδε νωρίτερα έναν άνδρα να μπαίνει στο κατάστημα κρατώντας στα χέρια μια μπλε αθλητική τσάντα, στην οποία εικάζεται ότι υπήρχε το όπλο του.

Αστυνομία: Δεν έχουμε επαφή με το δράστη

Αυτήκοοι μάρτυρες έκαναν λόγο για πυροβολισμούς, ωστόσο μέχρι στιγμής δεν έχει επιβεβαιωθεί κάτι σχετικό από την αστυνομία που έχει αρκεστεί σε μια ανάρτηση στην επίσημη σελίδα της στο Facebook.

«Οι ειδικές δυνάμεις προσπαθούν να έρθουν σε επαφή με τους ομήρους», αναφέρεται χαρακτηριστικά. Επίσης, η αστυνομία επισημαίνει ότι τα κοντινά γραφεία εκκενώθηκαν για προληπτικούς και ζητήθηκε από τους πολίτες στην περιοχή γύρω από το Martin Place, όπου βρίσκεται η καφετέρια, να παραμείνουν σε εσωτερικούς χώρους και μακριά από τα ανοιχτά παράθυρα.

Ο επικεφαλής της αστυνομίας της Νέας Νότιας Ουαλίας Άντριου Σίπιον ανέφερε ότι οι αρχές δεν μπορούν ακόμη να μιλήσουν με βεβαιότητα ότι είναι αντιμέτωποι με τρομοκρατική ενέργεια. Εν τούτοις όπως είπε στους δημοσιογράφους στο Σίδνεϊ «έχουμε προχωρήσει σε μια διαδικασία η οποία συνάδει με μια τρομοκρατική ενέργεια».

Ο επικεφαλής της αστυνομίας στην μεγαλούπολη της Αυστραλίας επιβεβαίωσε επίσης ότι πρόκειται μόνο για ένα συμβάν στην κεντρική επιχειρηματική συνοικία του Σίδνεϊ και ότι η πόλη είναι ανοικτή για τις επιχειρήσεις.

Στο μεταξύ, η αστυνομία της Αυστραλίας ανακοίνωσε ότι δεν έχει άμεση επαφή με τον ένοπλο δράστη, ο οποίος κρατά τους ομήρους και «συνελήφθη» από κλειστό κύκλωμα τηλεόρασης.

Ο επικεφαλής της αστυνομίας της Νέας Νότιας Ουαλίας, Άντριου Σίπιον, ανέφερε ότι οι αρχές δεν μπορούν ακόμη να μιλήσουν με βεβαιότητα ότι είναι αντιμέτωποι με τρομοκρατική ενέργεια. Εν τούτοις όπως είπε στους δημοσιογράφους στο Σίδνεϊ «έχουμε προχωρήσει σε μια διαδικασία η οποία συνάδει με μια τρομοκρατική ενέργεια».

«Μπορώ να επιβεβαιώσω πως έχουμε έναν ένοπλο δράστη στο κατάστημα ο οποίος κρατεί αδιευκρίνιστο αριθμό ομήρων», ανέφερε.

Επίσης, πρόσθεσε πως πρόκειται μόνο για αυτό συμβάν στην κεντρική επιχειρηματική συνοικία του Σίδνεϊ και επισήμανε ότι η πόλη είναι ανοικτή για τις επιχειρήσεις. Πάντως οι μεγάλες Τράπεζες της περιοχής έδωσαν εντολή στους εργαζόμενους να απομακρυνθούν ενώ οι αρχές έδωσαν εντολή για εκκένωση του Opera House και της Κρατικής Βιβλιοθήκης της πόλης.

Brazilian man says he killed dozens of women in Rio de Janeiro region

(CNN) -- A Brazilian man has confessed to killing 39 women in the Rio de Janeiro region, police said Thursday -- shocking claims that, if confirmed, would make him one of the most prolific serial killers in the country's history.

In an interview with Brazilian broadcaster TV Globo, the alleged killer, Sailson Jose das Gracas, said that he carried out the first slaying when he was 17 and continued to kill over the next decade.

"I started robbing purses and small things like that," he told TV Globo. "And as I got older, I started having a different thoughts. My thoughts started changing. From stealing, I started thinking about killing."

Sailson, reported to be 26-years-old, said he didn't kill impulsively but stalked his victims.

Rio police said they arrested Sailson on Wednesday on suspicion of killing a woman in the suburb of Nova Iguacu. He confessed to that homicide and then told police about the other killings, they said.

Sailson described his need to kill as pathological.

"When I didn't kill, I would get nervous," he told TV Globo. "I would pace around the house, and then when I killed, it calmed me."

Police chief Marcelo Machado told TV Globo that Sailson is also suspected of killing a 2-year-old boy, the son of one of the dead women.

'No regrets'

Specialized police teams are carrying out an investigation into his claims.

"We must carefully examine, one by one," Machado said.

Police said they had located four other cases from the homicide division that had the same modus operandi presented by Sailson, who told them he used knives to kill.

Police said they had also arrested a man and woman, who Sailson said had told him to kill the latest victim.

The self-declared killer said he had "no regrets" about his actions and would kill again if set free.

"What is done is done," he told the TV network. "If I leave here in 10, 15, 20 years, I'll go back to doing the same thing."

Paul Revere's 1795 time capsule unearthed

(CNN) -- A time capsule buried by patriots Samuel Adams and Paul Revere more than two centuries ago was unearthed Thursday in Boston.

The box-shaped capsule was placed by the Revolutionary-era duo in a cornerstone of the Massachusetts State House in 1795, the year construction began on the building, CNN affiliate WBZ reported.

When current-day workers repairing a water leak found the hidden antique, they called in a local expert from the Museum of Fine Arts who spent the better part of Thursday delicately and painstakingly chipping away at the cornerstone trying to extricate it.

"What we know the box contains, based on the notes that we have, is a Paul Revere plate, papers, and coins from the 1600s," said Massachusetts Secretary of State William Galvin, who also heads the state's historical commission. "It may contain other stuff too, we don't know that yet," he said.

Galvin told CNN that the capsule's contents are expected to be revealed sometime next week. For now, it's getting some TLC and a thorough exam -- including X-rays -- by the museum's staff.

"The contents are of concern, but the plaster that held the box in place is in good condition," he said.

This is not the first time this particular capsule was unearthed, according to Galvin. In 1855 it was dug up during emergency repairs to the State House and put back in place when the cornerstone was reset.

Extra precautions were taken then to ensure the box's safekeeping.

"There were some coins that were tossed in the 1855 ceremony in the mix of the mortar. They are in good condition so we are optimistic that the box itself has withstood the test of time and that it will therefore be holding the contents securely," Galvin said.

Galvin says both time-capsule events -- in 1795 and in1855 -- were chronicled in detail, and said his office is looking into whether the box will be reinstated and whether new items from the current era will be added to the box and reburied.
